How to Weather an HO Scale Freight Car - ARCO Covered Hopper

Since I’ve started this channel, I find myself filming just about everything I do for the layout, which makes everything take a lot longer. So the other day I decided to chill out and do a project just for me. I had a string of covered hoppers that I wanted to get ready for the layout, so I decided to weather the wheels and trucks using the method I used in my video on…. Well… weathering wheels and trucks.
In this video weather an HO Scale covered hopper car using a number of different layered techniques. Often when I do a weathering project, I use only Pan Pastels, but this time, there were a number of effects I was looking for, so I decided to dig a little deeper into my bag of weathering tricks. The techniques I’ll cover include india ink washes, painting and drybrushing with acrylics, PrismaColor erasable pigment pencils, Pan Pastel powders, Copic Sketch Markers, and oil paint washes.

Awesome! Very neat techniques. Speaking about cleaning the pan pastels off the rust spots with something wet, I found some q-tips in the cosmetic area of a store that were a bit stiffer than regular q-tips and come to a point that's strong enough to wet and scrub off small areas such as your rust spots. Also strong enough to use for paining fine lines which a toothpick is good for as well. Great video. 👍

I enjoy the fact you're not making a total rustbucket. Rail cars do have an amazingly long life span. In point of fact, I saw a PENN CENTRAL jade green covered hopper in a UP train the other day. The name PENN CENTRAL was pretty faded, but still legible. I like your technique. Very subtle goes a long way.

So far so good. Nothing over the top. Just basic weathering. I can dig it.

I tend to stay away from really heavy weathering. Every once in a while, but it’s the exception not the norm. Another reason I like modeling the 80s. Most rolling stock wasn’t covered in rust (or graffiti).

Great job the top of the hopper is white the a original color to the hopper im weathering my but I use oil Acrylics paints 🎨 keep making so great video

Other photos I saw of the prototype cars show the roof definitely being blue. So it was some sort of fading going in.
