In this video, Jack Dulls, Director of Training at Tulsa Welding School Jacksonville, demonstrates 4G 7018 all the way out with a backing strip on a 3/8 plate. This is a welding certification test, and it’s one of the tests offered at the TWS Jacksonville campus.

Answer: he’s not doing a test, he’s demonstrating how to run it. I think removing slag is safe to assume everyone understands. This isn’t a tutorial for garage hobbyists

I'm actually a Tulsa welding school student in Jacksonville phase 3 and I'm not looking forward to this test lol my last overhead project was a pain

Got a question Jack. Are backing plates allowed for ANY bend tests like mig or heliarc?. Ive noticed they are being used but not allowed in the early 80s, when I took mine. Just wondering I may have to take one soon.

you dont *have* to do anything, but you really should. you could get a slag inclusion otherwise

If you restart while it's still pretty hot, then it will most likely burn out the little bit of slag at the start you just can't go no further than it because that's when you start getting into where the thick slag is. Thats where you get slag inclusions at.

Should I be at a certain angel when welding over head and is it bad to push instead of pulling because I notice myself getting out of place once I’m mid ways down the weld I gotta test this Friday and I’m just wondering if it bad to start off pulling and end off pushing
