Again fantastic explanation!!!!!!!! Most people don't even think about making sure nothing is bothering, rubbing, or pinching the horse. They just slap it on and go. Then when the horse starts acted up, bucking and rearing they blame the horse, when its THEM. Clearly anyone who doesn't do this method of saddling their horse is selfish, lazy, and just doesn't care about the horses well being. Thank you so much for your videos!!! Keep them coming! ~Natalie
@gitanopnmex : I don't use bits, don't like them so the bit should be the last thing in and the first thing out. I leave my horse in a halter until I am done and ready to go. Anytime a bit is in there is the chance that the horse steps on reins or gets hung up on something, the nose and month need to be protected as much as possible.
I've watched tons of these videos and yours is the first one that I've seen that said make sure you wipe your horse down and your pad down to make sure there's no grass burrs or sand on it by far the best video on RU-vid about how to settle a horse
@WhitetailHurt : Lots of saddle places will let you take saddle and try it out, that is a good way to tell. I like wade tree saddles, but they tend to be expensive. McCalls makes some good trail riding saddles, some like Aussie (no horn), some like endurance, I like my horn in case the trail is busy I can honk. :) Pre twisted stirrups is a real benefit for knees and hips, takes a lot of pressure off on long rides, if you don't buy saddle with them, pay to have them done. Good all wool pad!
I volunteer at a local ranch and I feel bad for the trail horses because the other volunteers and employees don't brush the horses very well before rides. Therefore I brush them as I walk them up from the pasture to be tacked up for a ride. They also don't pick the horses' hooves. Atleast I do it, right?
This is such a straightforward, easy to understand video on how to Western saddle a horse. There were no umm's or uhh's because you know what you're talking about. Getting to see the process as it's explained makes it easier for beginners to understand. For me, anyway. I didn't realize how much weight you had lost and muscle that you gained till I watched this from 13 years ago. You're definitely in better shape now than you when you made this video - looking good! 💯👍 P.S. Don't let that stop you from making cheesecake videos, please!
well..today is my first day at the theraputic riding stable..i have very little horse experience, other than loving and kissing them. This video helped me alot. Thank you
helps the saddle from moving back, helps the saddle from sliding left or right, distributes any pulling force over a larger surface area so all the force is not just on cinch. It also makes the breast more formal than just a t-shirt with no collar. RE: Nica Gringa : what is the purpose of the breast collar??
I was always told that the cinch had to be real tight to keep the saddle on the horse. I decided to try and saddle my horse your way as per this video, leaving the cinch a little loose my horse and I had the best ride ever, Thank you Rick for all these videos they really help.
love this video. You are so detailed and sensitive to making sure the preparations for riding are for the comfort of the horse and tt gives an amazing view of what may hurt, bother, or irritate a sweet sensitive animal that needs this kind of care. THANK YOU!
Ive ridden western for a long time now and im a bit shorter than normal and my horse is tall, so getting the saddle was always a strugle cus boy it was heavy! but thanks for the tip on that leg I never thought about that! keep up the great videos
Maze You might also look into Circle Y or Tucker Flex Saddles. A good used one can be found on tack trade web pages, FB groups or Ebay. They are light, flex on the horse's back for comfort and made in the USA. They fit just about any horse you ride.
I remember hearing your saddle pad tip in another video of yours and I always do it now xD It's all the little things that make up the big picture! Thanks Rick!
😂 Buddy was trying to pick pocket Rick's gloves 🤣 Buddy your a good boy Mr.T your a good boy and Mokie is a good boy too(I don't think he had Mokie when this video was posted🤷♂️)
This is great, and looks like you got yourself a nice horse there! Always loved western, even though I'be never really tried it more than two hours in the mountains of Brazil.. But I dream of learning it, so that I can look for a job on a ranch, when I'm done with educating myself. :)
I'm noticing that not many people use the cinch knot anymore when saddling their horse. Now I get what the buckle is for 😅 I just never use it. I feel better with the cinch knot. Great video! 👍
thank you for this, its been a few months sense i put a saddle on my gelding, but like a bike, once you learn it you never forget, but just in case thanks for the refresher!
Great video Rick! Glad you and Buddy are out of Commie California! I moved to Texas too with ALL my horses, dogs and two goats…….oh….and my baron eyed parrot….whose name is STEWIE! Thank you for all you teach us and share!
I wish you would have mentioned more about the rear chinch. I see people tightening that rear chinch too much because they think it keeps the saddle on the horse and they galled their horse. When I said something this one "expert for 20 years" said a loose back chinch causes wrecks and death if a tree branch gets inside a lose chinch. I said I'm not saying leaving it hanging down, just LOOSE enough to slide your hand in between the horse and the strap. They said I was stupid 🙄 But it was me that decided to bring a can of blue spray that she needed to put on her galled horse after riding trails for 2 hours Our horses weren't galled
Very very very very very good lesson perfecto..! And I do like the saddle and the saddle out fit thanks a lot. I all way say the back sinch has to be tide a bid .. perfecto.!
I looked at different videos about riding and working with horses, Rick Gore's is the best, especially for a novice from New Jersey like me! If I had seen these before I photographed a cattle drive in Paraguay, even with their weird saddles, I would have enjoyed the experience more!
an easy way to put the saddle on is to pull the stirrup up on the horn with the cinch and breast collar and back cinch up underneath the stirrup so that it is easier to swing the saddle on.
gret job! your one of the few who can actually make a video about this and do everythign correctly! jw, where is the navajo pad? depending on your bounce/jump pad, so u not always need a navajo pad?
Rick, shouldn’t you hook your stirrup over the horn on the other side from where you’re saddling? I always do, so the stirrup doesn’t clunk into their ribs while swinging it over them. No judgement or anything just additional step I take personally. This is a great video to show people how to tack up properly as I’ve seen people’s saddles slip on rides from improper saddling and it’s not been pretty!
Hey Rick I know buddy and Mr. T are so calm and desensitized to trails. How do I get my horse come outside the pasture for riding? Is it just repetition and patience?
Pretty much, and when starting trail rides, do short ones at first. 5 minutes, walk back to the barn. 10 minutes, then back home. Let the horse get used to leaving and coming back, without asking for a five hour trail ride full of hills and fallen trees and sharp rocks and cougars, lol. Also, short trail rides will start to condition his muscles and strengthen him so longer trails aren't so taxing.
i was told never walk behind the horse, and i saw you did just that, so that was kind of surprising to me, so my question is, how do you know if the horse trust you enough to walk behind it?
Also, if you are still learning your horse I suggest walking around your horse's butt with one hand on top of his rear end. It's a good way to let him know what's behind him and a good trust building excersize. Walk around him real close so he can't get a full kick on you.
keeps saddle from flopping or bouncing in back of saddle, keeps saddle from bouncing on horse's back, gives more pulling strength if you dally up and drag something or have to rope or pull another critter.
Watched a western saddle being placed on a horse with a folded towel in the back of it, maybe it is because the saddle does not fit? Or tilts the saddle forward a tad?
He's gotten old. I fear we'll lose another great man soon ;-;. We always lose the greatest men too soon. At least I know and can say that Rick has definitely improved the life of my gelding.
Trainer said i didnt need my back cinch anymore now my horse bucks at the canter with it. What's the best way to get her use to it again? Would you consider a back cinch neccessary?
Dirk Neugebauer that's awesome you notice if someone is carrying a pocket knife or not. I always do that too and wonder what brand it may be. I always carry a Benchmade knife on me no matter what I'm wearing...tee hee hee I love Benchmade knifes!!!
1. Is that a 16" or 17" saddle seat? 2. Who makes your saddle? I am sure you have a good one and I would like one just like it. 3. How tight to make the cinch so that the saddle will not slip when mounting or riding? Thanks
hpylori7 I don’t know what the saddle seat is or where he got it but every horse is different on what hole you put it on when your mouthing. A lot the horses I ride I but on the second while on the right but if I’m riding English it varies
Not really. Quick feel of the surfaces, cinch up a couple times, and go. Rick was very thorough in his explanation, but he can saddle his horse in 2 minutes when not teaching how. It becomes habit, muscle memory.
