Joe, I've learned so much from watching your videos. I'm a heavy-duty metal fabricator (heavy-duty conveyors). I also polish high-performance aluminum motors and wheels. But I just want to tell you, you're the best, my guy 💯. Anyone can follow your instructions, so thank you for making it so easy for everyone. But I have a request. How about a video on how to paint multiple colors of gel coat as if you wanted to paint a multicolored jet boat, for example?

Awesome results! You're a natural teacher, I always reach the end of your videos feeling like I have a good grasp of information and techniques you've presented. Some ideas for future videos: - Outboard engine control rigging - Outboard engine maintenance (including steering system) - Marine electronics installation & rigging - Installing & rigging boat lighting (courtesy lights, spreaders, spots, anchor and navigation, etc.) - Boat trailer maintenance - Navigation, especially using paper charts and compass. I'm intentionally trying to plan my trips ahead of time using charts I print out from the NOAA site and determining waypoints and associated compass headings. The chartplotter is so convenient, but like the GPS in my vehicles I feel that it tends to make me too dependant and detracts from my situational awareness. If it ever fails when I'm out of sight of land I want to be confident that I can find my way back to the inlet using charts and compass. Many of these will probably be included in your 21 ft. center console restoration project and some may be outside the scope of what you want to present on your channel, but just throwing up topics that I've been trying to educate myself on. The longer I own my boat the more I realize I need to know!

Thank you so much! Glad to help the boating community! I appreciate the helpful suggestions for the channel. I am sure that we will cover a broader range of topics as the channel grows, but in the meantime, some of your suggestions may be covered in the 29 build series of videos. Especially the motor rigging, wiring, and electronics videos. Thanks again!

Wow I thought I might have been using to aggressive of a grit using 400 grit. I feel so much better seeing Joe use 400 grit. I went 400,600,800,1200,1500 2000. But that was on Gelcoat paste from FGCI. It's an amazing product. Takes all the guess work out for newbies. It's a polyester filler that can be used top side or bottom side and very forgiving to work with. I'm going to be painting soon and I'm following everything in this video. Thanks again Joe. I'll be rolling and tipping. I suck at trying to match the paint using the dye. I'm just going to repaint the whole top. I'm working on a white boat and still can't match it to my liking 😂.

Another superb video, I’ve saved quite a few of yours for when I eventually try some projects , as well as for the small repairs I need to do. The 3m guide coat is quite pricey, how long do you reckon it would last for an amateur doing no more than a couple of square metres of gelcoat a year
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 28 дней назад
Thanks, glad you are enjoying the videos! The guide coat doesn't go bad like some paint or other materials can,and the container has quite a bit of material in it. I am surprised at how far it goes, even for my volume of work! Mirka is another company that offers a guide coat, and may be less expensive. There should be some Amazon links below the videos, and if you watch the products the price can fluctuate a good bit. I hope this helps and I appreciate you watching!

Wow! Gorgeous! Very informative for some minor gelcoat repairs I have to do this spring and then for the rest of the boat. One question, how and what do I use to make the anti-slip part look good? They tend to clog up with everything from skin residue to algae and such.
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 23 дня назад
I'm glad it was helpful! You can run a compound and polish material over the nonskid and get pretty good results. It might take a little practice, but it can be done. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching!

Fantastic video once again, greatly appreciated. Can this process be applied to 2-part poly-urethane epoxy yacht coating (specifically Epifanes brand, dried and sufficiently cured), if the application process left behind orange peel and/or roller debris on the final coat? I recognize that in perfect shop conditions this product flows out beautifully with brush or roller application. My outdoor application has had great results as well. I am just wondering if I can go that extra step towards a professional finish without compromising the product.
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 26 дней назад
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I don't have much experience with that particular brand of paint, but I do know that you can wet sand out small runs and drips in other paint systems. You would usually use less aggressive paper to start out with, say maybe 600 or 800. And be sure to use a small rigid sanding block like we did in our gelcoat repair master class video to help concentrate you sanding efforts. Hope this helps!

Hey my friend. I'm a big fan of your content, I watch all the time. I think you covered three topic of my question. I currently have 3 coats non wax gel and getting ready for 3 coats waxed. My question is prep for the waxed.. What steps are necessary for good adhesion???
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 23 дня назад
Glad you are enjoying the channel! Waxed gelcoat is going to bond with non waxed gelcoat just fine in most cases with very little prep needed. Just remember, though, if the waxed gelcoat fully cures between coats, it will need to be prepped and sanded again before applying more. If you are spraying gelcoat like we did in the video, you can apply multiple coats of waxed gelcoat over each other, as long as the coat underneath has not started to cure yet. If you are rolling or brushing the gelcoat, you would typically only add wax to the gelcoat on the very last coat of the job. The wax will allow the gelcoat to fully cure tack free. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

This is excellent man, thank you. I am currently repairing some waterslides with damaged gelcoat. My issue is that I need to be able to walk on the gelcoat to apply the next coat. When I use unwaxed gelcoat to build layers up it gets ruined when I walk on it with dirt and damage to the surface. If I use waxed flowcoat then I need to sand it between and it takes forever to vuild uo enough thickness. What is the trick to getting a good build before sanding? Thanks mate

@Philip-u2x 28 дней назад
Thank you again another brilliant video. Do you ever work on Aluminium boats, if so what would you recommend to stops leaks and a good paint to use.
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 27 дней назад
Wow, thanks! I have owned a few aluminum boats, and our family actually built a welded aluminum 28 ft work boat years ago. There are a couple of products I have had success with in the past. But remember, your repair is only as good as your prep work. So make sure the aluminum surface is very clean and has been prepped with sanding before starting. Interlux paints make a very good epoxy barrier coat primer that I recommend starting with, it is called 2000e. I show its application in our 29 build series videos while preparing our fuel tank for installation. Next, I have had success with an epoxy based repair filler called Marinetex. Follow the directions on the materials, and you should have some good results. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!

Thanks for this video, I have a heavily oxidized boat I started at 800 grit and it didn't seem to get all the oxidization out. I was afraid that any lower would be to aggressive. Do you ever work on bass boats? would like to see how you would approach some of the repairs you have covered on something with metal flake vs the solid color
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 28 дней назад
Glad it helped! Yep, 600 is a very good starting point as well. Just remember, you want to use the least aggressive grit, that will still get the job done. No, not much metal flake work down this way, but I hope to do a video on that in the future for you all. Thanks for watching!

Nice work! Do you keep the polishing pads separate to avoid contaminating finer grit with larger grit?
@FishBumpTV

Thanks! Yes, keeping them separated is a good idea. I always clean them before use as well to minimize the chance of contamination. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Can similar results be had with the sanding and polishing if the gelcoat is applied by rilling and tipping?
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 26 дней назад
Yes, you just have to be sure to apply plenty of gelcoat before starting. Usually 5 coats. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching!

Want to refinish my dads old Herter boat. You can actually see the water through the side of it, so I’m not sure if it’s even safe. I will have to look at a lot of your videos to figure this out. Thank you very much.

I would like to see a video on stress cracks in gelcoat. I am hoping that there is a "cheat" that doesn't involve grinding, glassing, faring and gel coating. I have some stress cracks in a no slip surface that will be hard if not impossible to match.

Hey Joe! I just sprayed my whaler interior with gelcoat/duratec 50:50. I have some runs/drips on the inner gunnels. Any tips for fixing these areas without burning through the adjacent nice areas. Thanks again for all your help!
@FishBumpTV

You should be able to take some small wood sanding blocks wrapped in some wet or dry sandpaper and sand them down carefully, then polish out. Our gelcoat repair masterclass video demonstrates the basic technique. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!

Actually, I went back and saw that in one repair video you used a razor blade to scrape the gelcoat,. I worked great with the drips. Very similar to using a cabinet scraper on wood. Thanks again!

The Hutchins 4500 Industrial sander is hands down the best sander in the world, it's bulletproof. It will sand all day, and never get hot or misses a beat. At $450. dollars it's far cheaper than all the other sanders you would need to replace that will wear out and quit. Buy once lasts a life and your son's life... Dynablade makes a cheaper but usable sander if $ are few...
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 28 дней назад
Agreed! The Hutchins has more hours of operation on it than any other tool in my shop by far! It is money well spent for sure. My Dad used to say that there is cost, and then there is value. The Hutchins delivers on the value! Thanks for watching and commenting

Question Im trying to clean up the bottom of my seadoo and the previous owner spray-painted trailer with the seadoo on the trailer I tried with acetone. It seems to work but it’s evaporating too quickly would Lacquer thinners damage the gelcoat? Or would you recommend some sort of polishing compound
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 23 дня назад
Lacquer thinner shouldn't bother the gelcoat, but I always recommend testing on a small, less obvious area just to be sure. If that doesn't work, some rubbing compound, or even some very fine wet or dry sandpaper in the 1500 to 2000 grit range, may be necessary. I just made a gelcoat wet sand and polish video that might answer some of your questions. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!

Can you add an amazon link for the corresponding rotary buffing arbor. I have the same grinder but don't know what size will fit those pads you're recommending.

Sure, I want to say that they are a standard 7 inch velcro buffing arbor. Should be pretty common. Thanks for watching!

It would definitely be more work, but it is doable. Thanks for watching!

Can you get this type of finish if you roll the gelcoat? Or does it need to be sprayed on?
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 20 дней назад
It can be done with a roller or brush, but spraying is going to come out much smoother in most cases. Thanks for watching!

Can you spray gelcoat over old gelcoat, then cut and polish?
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 27 дней назад
Yes, you just need to clean, and thoroughly prep the surface before applying. Our recent how to spray gelcoat and how to wet sand and polish gelcoat videos should help a lot. Just remember that in the video I use a small 1.5 mm tip spray rig. A 2.5 mm or bigger tip is recommended for larger gelcoat jobs. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Compared to automotive paint is gel coat much more protective to the fiberglass. I know they used to paint some fiberglass cars, but is gel coat a much more hardy finish?Then automotive paint
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 28 дней назад
Yes, generally, gelcoat is much tougher than automotive style paints. There are pros and cons to each, though. Paint is usually better for ease of application, and color selection. Hope this helps, and I appreciate you watching!

Looking to do some spot repairs on my 69’ Whaler. Why is gelcoat $250 dollars a quart at Spectrum and only $54 dollars from FCGI? That’s a major difference and the FGCI came with sanding agent and MEKP.
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 28 дней назад
I have no idea why there would be a price difference as I am not affiliated with either company. You should buy from whichever company you feel most comfortable with. The same goes for any method or process I show on the channel. I am just showing how our family has done things and has had success with in the past, but not saying anyone has to do what I show. I hope this helps, and I wish you the very best with your Boston whaler project!

You are paying for Spectrum's database of colors. There is no other company in the US that has most of the boat manufacturers colors on file.

@@fiberglassguru $200 more? FGCI has whaler blue and it matches very well on a 50+ year old boat. I also like the plastic bottle that it came in vs a metal can.
