Um what if like I'm going up to the jumps so fast I'm always over jumping 50 to 60 foot jumps cause I'm going to fast but I try to scrub and just lean over but I'm not sure what to do to figure the scrub out

Well I also scrub smaller jumps cause I've kinda figured that out on the small ones but I feel sketchy and don't want to go for it on bigger jumps without getting the form right first cause I've been trying to whip bigger jumps so I got the leaning part just not how to scrub

#1 - Load into the face. #2 - Just BEFORE you are thrown upwards (vertical acceleration) due to the jump face and the rear spring rebounding, you shift your body to one side, and slightly "release" the bike in the other direction. Usually this release is accompanied by your body shifting back, and arms extending a bite. Sort of like you are letting bike "get away from you". #3 - If you are going to whip standing, you have to be pretty stiff so that you load up the springs. A whip is about USING the energy from rebound and the jump face to crate side rotation. If you are going whip from a seated position, you will have a lot of energy put into the springs, because you are on the seat, and all that energy is going load up the suspension through the seat. When you are sitting the amount of side motion required is less. So be careful. #4 - This underlying physics is that you are creating a misalignment. If your body's center of mass is in line with the direction of vertical acceleration due to rebound and the jump face, you will not whip. If your center of mass is "off axis" from that force vector, it will create a rotation. That rotation is a whip. It is all about moving your body at just the right time, to create that misalighment between the force vector and your center of mass. It is all about timing. Load into the face with your body in line with the bike...then as the bike is giving the energy back...you will have shifted to the side. To whip the bike left....you shift your body right at just the right instant. It does not take much. Timing is key. With a whip, your are using body geometry and rebound/vertical acceleration to create a rotation to the side. Scrubbing is COMPLETELY different. With a scrub you are using bike position to eliminate rebound in the vertical direction, so as to change your trajectory by manipulating the center of mass of you and bike combined.

YOU should be doing a tutorial! Every one for these videos I've seen don't explain how to do it. They mostly just say you go up the jump at an angle and lock the bars and push it back with your foot. Your description was the best at what is happening. You just have to add what it takes to get back in alignment to land.
@myronstambaugh761
@myronstambaugh761 Год назад
Yes, a very good description. I am practicing my jumping and finding that if I'm in a bit of a turn going up the jump face the suspension rebound will bring the bike all the way back through the center-line and I'll land the other way. For example, I leave the jump face headed in a right hand direction but the rebound takes me back left by the time I land. I'm thinking that the solution for this over-rebound action is a bit of compensation on the jump face by sending my body weight the other way and using my legs/hips to forbid the bike to rebound back through the center-line. Does this sound like the beginnings of a whip or am I headed for another surgery, lol?

Very good explanation, AJ. I was racing moto (mid 70's-early 80's) before you were born, but hung up my boots (due to knee issues) earlier than I would have liked. Whipping wasn't even born yet back then. There was something called a 'cross-up' but it was a 'style' thing- not something developed out of the desire to lower lap-times. Great to watch, but prbly not going to add that skill. Not checking my lap times these days. Keep up the great vids.

From my understanding, correct me if I'm wrong, you are basically counter steering your bike on the face of the jump to get that lean off the take off. Kinda like riding a motorcycle, you counter steer the bikes handle bars to get it to lean over in the turn.

An ollie is easily explained, I learned how to do one with a 2min explanation and watching someone do it a few times, whipping however is not so easy, I have watched every video out there and watched thousands of whips in person whether standing trackside or following someone off jumps, and still cant do it, dont get me wrong I can get the bike to lean, and can scrub a little, but a full on whip hasn't happened yet. I know I need to learn because I am at the point where I have to chop the throttle off most jump faces because I'm approaching so fast and dont want to oj, when dudes who can scrub and whip keep it pinned and gain a bike length or two on almost every jump.

I think what also makes whipping the bike difficult to explain is that there are many factors. The jump itself plays a role. Peaky jumps require a different technique to jump period. Add whipping to that jump and you're adding exponential difficulty. There's speed. Jump face. Jump style. Suspension setup. I've seen slow motion video of several different riders doing whips. And sometimes they're hanging way off the back of the bike as they're taking off. Sometimes they're neutral. And this is what makes it such a feeling type of skill. You really would have to get to a point where your skill can tell you everything you need to know about the jump before you try to whip that jump. Examples are the tracks I ride. Orlando MX. Pax Trax. And Mesa MX. All 3 completely different dirt. Different style of track. And most importantly the jumps are shaped completely different. Pax jumps are big. But have a lot of transition. Which makes them pretty easy once you get over how big the jumps can be. Orlando has smaller jumps wit good transitions. But tend to be a short distance from ground level to the take off. So you have less time to execute proper technique. Most of their jumps are quick. Like from ground to face happens faster. And Mesa has almost no transition and they're peaky. Mesa it's like it's flat then abruptly goes up. It almost feels like a G-out before you take off. Point to all this is that whipping is difficult in and of itself. But unless you can pick a jump that is ideal and just work on whips all day you're not going to learn them easily. It really is something that happens with progression.
@AjCatanzaro

@Degenerate124
@Degenerate124 3 года назад
A lot of people can only whip 1 way. It’s just something in your brain. I could only whip to the right forever and could not whip left for nothing it felt soo awkward. Then one day I came off the face and lost traction to the left and whipping and brought it back by accident and somehow and by accident I can go both ways now but not as good to the left as it still feels sketchy. Like AJ said doing things with your off side of your body more really helps with stuff like that because you have to train your brain to make it feel normal. I’m very right side dominate and it really shows on the bike.

I can't whip, but I understand how to. One thing you didn't say was, when you drive up the face of the jump ( I think I've seen all riders do this ), they push with the downside hand, as they lean for the whip. It looks like the rider is turning left when they lean right.

AJ, AJ, Aj 🙂. The whip is the very first thing a rank novice should begin to learn as he takes to the air. If u cannot control the bike against a cross wind, if u cannot stop a slight lateral kick on the ramp from becoming a 90 degree landing error, 90' feet later 😲, then long before u earn enough points to become an amateur u will become just another casualty. Just because a whip is not visible to a bystander does not mean that the bike (exoert rider) isnt actually whipping against some equalizing force (ie: a cross wind or a takeoff kick). U definitely need a BIG followup video 🧐. (PS: I gave u a thumbs up for this vid in anticipation 👍😀)
@AjCatanzaro
@AjCatanzaro 3 года назад
I would describe that as reacting to the characteristics of a takeoff as opposed to a whip. A rider needs to create full understand of how a bike will react in every situation before worrying about an intentional whip. Whipping into a crosswind is even beyond that. Very high level skill that most pros cannot even do properly

@@nolangottwald1191 no. The difference between a whip and scrub is kinda loosing traction off the face. Scrubs you want to loose traction. I was riding in the rain, mud, and I think I whipped a little bit because the tire was spinning and I went up the jump face unstrait and the bike kept kicking out to the side just a little bit. Lol

What's the difference between a scrub and a whip? Isn't a whip just style and a scrub ia about speed? I don't know, please correct me.
@sexatica
@sexatica 3 года назад
Scrub is for going fast and whips are for style like you said.
@NirHason
@NirHason 3 года назад
With scrub you're trying to avoid the bike from getting too much air and transfer its motion from up to a forward motion. Whip it's just for style :)
@TheShift1313
@TheShift1313 3 года назад
Scrubs are soaking up the jumps and diverting the suspension rebound off to the side rather than giving you more height. You need to generally break traction off the jump. A whip can scrub off speed or set you up better for a turn but generally you are not going much faster than just straight airing a jump.

Some good stuff here but everyone wants to know how to bring the bike back after the rear is kicked out. The mechanics of pushing on the bars and pulling back with your legs. Need a re-do on this one 😬. Can’t tell you how many pros I’ve asked about this back in the day, and since they all naturally talented they don’t really know what’s happening, and struggle to describe.

This sounds crazy, but if you do what you’re supposed to do on the takeoff you don’t have to do anything to bring it back!

This thread is full of bad😂. If you’re scared, don’t do it. Plain and simple. If you try to do this on a “small jump” you’re going to wreck and get hurt... and on a bicycle, really?! I can throw my 450 around like no other but you’re not gonna be able to throw a dirtbike whip on a bike, period, the physics are totally different.
@xi-deadshot-ix5838
@xi-deadshot-ix5838 3 года назад
@@YZFMX256 definitely agree. If you try to learn how to whip on a small jump you’re gonna eat shit. The bike needs time to do what it needs to do and come back because you can’t muscle it around. It’s all in the physics. I’m just starting to learn whips and the smallest jump I’ll attempt one on is like a 40’ table with a fairly poppy lip. And it’s something I figured out naturally. The first time was on a step up hip in the hills. I leaned a little bit into the direction of the landing toward the top of the lip and the bike naturally floated out to the side and started to “pancake”. It was almost effortless. Granted it was a small whip though 😆 Gotta start somewhere
@YZFMX256
@YZFMX256 3 года назад
@@xi-deadshot-ix5838 exactly. I learned on a 75’ table top. Has a decent run up, probably about 1/2 throttle 3rd gear on my 450 (most of the time i just coast off the face bc i have so much speed) i kinda carve off the face, lean back slightly while pulling my bars down to the right, then turn them to the right and get on the gas to straighten the bike out.

I liked the "whips" towards the end of the video! I have been in a gnarly dirt bike accident in my past... Maybe not as bad as others have. The bike landed on top of me from 25', flew off the track obviously a bad landing. It (250f) landed on top of me. Long story short, broke 5 ribs, collapsed that lung, chest tube inserted, and lacerated liver... Bed rest for 4 weeks after so I didn't kill myself. Ended up not playing football that year (first year of high school football), but played basketball. Blah Blah Blah.. Rode my bike home, had someone start it for me(wilcox), and pick it up. They took me right in, obviously. When you hit a 55' top at a different speed, and you're bike lands on you, and the ppl watching ask to call 911... fuck them. JK I should have taken their response. All in ALLL I rode my bike back through the woods and leaned my 250 up against a barn. The neighbors dragged me to my parents who then nascard to the hospital.!! 5 broken ribs, collapsed lung and lacerated my liver stage 3... Bed rest for 5 weeks. I was doing wheelies down my road before I knew I was hurt.. Lets fucking go.

@ 5:30 I think what you are looking for::::: (most every street rider knows this because we will ride with one hand once in a while) when you want the bike to lean left you’ll steer right. Anyone who doesn’t agree with this is simply foolish. This is not a debate. It’s fact. Moving on...when on the jump face I think you’re trying to speak about that. Steering the bike (or tripping the bike) downward gets the bike flat. The gyroscope effect helps bring the bike back vertical. Something I’ve noticed watching a few thousand whips. - good riders are whipping sometimes beyond 90° the only way they can get the bike straight again is by leading with their body. Just adding my Full Geek observations. 💪🏼
@Degenerate124
@Degenerate124 3 года назад
As a really good street rider and a moto rider you are 100% wrong in comparing the 2. Totally different. Totally different balance points totally different tires just totally different. When on the street you lean the way you want to go while “pushing” the same side hand pressure on the bars. Which is backwards of a dirt bike if your going left leaning left you “pull” left on the bars. If you’ve never actually done both you don’t actually know. So your remark about disagreeing being foolish is foolish🤷🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️😂
@dathonlawler81
@dathonlawler81 3 года назад
@@Degenerate124 gosh damnit dude. You’re soooooooo right. Humble yourself....You’re wrong. It’s physics. Only exception is speed. Once the bike reaches the gyro effect at a certain speed it’s all the same. Turn left you go right. Slower speeds you steer the bars in the direction you desire to travel.
@dathonlawler81
@dathonlawler81 3 года назад
@@Degenerate124 I don’t have to be a good or bad rider to understand the attributes of lean. I only need the understanding. So if you are a “really good” rider. Understanding what’s going on will likely make you a better rider.
@Degenerate124
@Degenerate124 3 года назад
@@dathonlawler81 do your ride moto and throw your bike around? If not then you have 0 knowledge of how to do it. Your literally comparing riding a street bike to moto and there’s no comparison what so ever besides knowing out to actually ride. If you understood the physics of it you would also know comparing the two is ignorant. Again if you never take a bike off a jump and thrown it your clueless. 🤦🏼‍♂️😂
