We're not used to hearing such drastic switches in people's voices unless we majorly change their emotions. If this was a real situation, my first question would've been: "What is this guys history with relationships? Get me his girlfriend and mother here! @EGarrett01 yeah but it’s also extremely mature to not get offended when someone tells you that you did not do a good job. I can’t respect a man who wants me to dance around his feelings bc he’s insecure and needs my approval. That isn’t a man; it’s a boy. And to the OP I think him not throwing his partner under the bus by saying he did something wrong isn’t as much to protect his feelings (both guys are obviously confident to begin with) but more so to show a unified front/ professionalism.

I don't think any bank robber is gonna give a shit about that at first, if they did they wouldn't have robbed a bank in the first place. On top of that everybody knows armed robbery with a lethal weapon is 10 to 20 years minimum, when you're talking about that kind of time behind bars adding or detracting time becomes slightly abstract, it stops making empathic sense on the spot which lowers it's effective negotional capital. If you're a bank robber who got surrounded you're already so far deep in the hole the only real way out is a total win or a nye partial loss, as a criminal you know that if they come in you have a good chance of making it out alive if you surrender, thus the idea of not doing as much time becomes inconsequential if the risk of death is low. In short you have every insentive to try and push as far as you can for that total win (escape) if you know the worst case scenario (death) is not likely to occur. When someone is bargaining with a stronger currency than you (in this case the lives of the hostages) your only real choices are to either meet that strengh head on (with threat of death, ie not matter what happens when they come in the criminal WILL be killed) or wait it out. If you can buy enough time for the person on the other side to realise that they've already failed and there is no escape possible, they will be willing to talk provided they are given legal assurances. Time is the name of the game, but early on you have to give off the right impression so that you can negotiate fairly latter on.

@EGarrett01
@EGarrett01 4 года назад
@hakim - That's not necessarily true. A lot of times the bank robber never thought they were going to get caught in the first place. If they're stuck in a hostage situation, it already means that things didn't go as planned and they may be looking to just escape with their life. You can also tell them that they can leave the money behind and only get a few years if that (whether or not that's true, I would definitely believe it).
@hakimdaaloul9886
@hakimdaaloul9886 4 года назад
@@EGarrett01 You didn't understand my point, of course something went wrong it's never in the plan to stay in a bank for more than a couple minutes but what i'm saying is that people don't start out robbing banks. Bank robbers are usualy long time criminals, this isn't going to their first rodeo with the law and they would know that unless they are forced to the police aren't just going to kill them. These are guys who most likely have already been behind bars and are not looking to go back hence the need to buy time. Their first reaction isn't going to be admitting defeat and negociating a reasonable deal, it's going to be "I'm not going back to jail !!".
@EGarrett01
@EGarrett01 4 года назад
If they start shooting hostages the police are going in there and the police are going to kill them. They are dying that day. Armed robbery you said yourself is 10-20 years minimum. Would you rather serve 10 years in jail (get out in your 30's if you're in your 20's) or get shot to death right now?

My father was an interrogator in Vietnam. As I grew up he would always take to me about how to negotiate from either position. His one tag line was know everything first, never ask questions you don’t know the answer to or all possible answers. If I were there I would start by telling him he’s only a bank robber now, if he kills he’s wanted for a capital murder which carries the chair. Also if he shoots someone entry teams are calculating risk, right now no one’s coming in. Then tell him up front what you cannot give him. Then help him help himself to the lowest level of trouble he can accept.
@flochfitness
@flochfitness Год назад
Not bad responses but what I have picked up on this exercise is that “win”you aren’t trying to convince the other side of anything. You were trying to use tactical empathy and listen. You are simply trying to let the air out of the balloon of the aggressive person overtime without yielding your position or becoming emotional yourself. Using rational thinking when someone is in such a heightened fight or flight state doesn’t seem like it’s gonna work very well. Instead, you use your own tone and questions and let out that aggression and the more sensible they become…SLOW DOWN. Just think about it rationally, does anyone in their right mind think that while being surrounded by dozens of police officers they’re just gonna be able to walk out of the bank aND live a normal life afterward? No. The key is to get the robber to burn off all of that fight or flight, and eventually come to the realization that if they want to be free the best bet is to surrender.
