Since being stuck at home I've finally able to edit and upload this video that I made over winter break at Columbia! My friend J.C. was kind enough to let me interview him about his experiences with ISEF, the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair. Be sure to watch this video all the way to the end to learn all about what his project was, how the ISEF experience went, and how you can maximize your chances of winning!

This video was super informative! I watched this video the day before competing at my county science fair and it helped a lot, especially for the interview tips. I ended up winning 1st place and was also chosen to represent my county at ISEF as an ISEF finalist!! Thank you so much for the incredible interview and great insights (:

Hi I’m a freshman in high school and really want to get into research at first I started searching about prions disease but I lost interest really quickly and to be honest I had no idea what kind of question in prion disease I would answer, I know that I’m interested in biology and I want to do a research in the biology field, but the problem is I don’t know if the topic I would choose would be research worthy I’m afraid the I wont find the answer to my research question. I’ve seen many videos saying you should choose a topic that’s in between not to narrow and not to wide that is why I’m kinda struggling right now and I would really appreciate some advice my goal to participate in isef and win an award there. Btw I live in Saudi Arabia and I don’t have a lab to work with do you think it’s possible to write a biology research project without a lab ?
@lanaalabbasi5315
@lanaalabbasi5315 4 года назад
I was qualified from Saudi Arabia with a project in quantum physics. When I started my project I really needed advice like that, So thanks a lot for uploading a video about ISEF. It’s just bad and sucks to lose my opportunity to participate this year. But I will keep working on my project to participate next year, I am so thrilled to meet young scientists from around the globe.

It really sucks they cancelled ISEF this year. I qualified from Ireland, and put my life on hold for weeks in preparation & then it was all cancelled. Life-long dream gone, and I wont get another chance (although I have next yr, i'm not eligible for the award I need to win to go as I've won it previously)

Hey, that really does suck, and I'm so sorry you're going through that! Please feel free to email me (info@myivyeducation.org) and I'd be super happy to help you find other scientific opportunities you could still pursue and find fulfillment in :)

I’m so sorry you won and then it got cancelled, that is the absolute worst. I know what it’s like to work towards this for months and months (actually two years) and then not get to go. It was a life long dream fulfilled at the time when I was selected to go in 2017 myself. I know it’s probably hard to hear but if your perusing science as a career, this fair would have only been a stepping stone anyways. If you qualified to make it there you definitely have the potential to make it anywheres in the sciences. If your going to college or more likely applying, use this experience in a meaningful way. Maybe wright about the work and the loss of this opportunity in a personal essay and show others your passions for research. Again sorry all my fellow alumni are missing out this year but remember your still alumni!!!! Congrats and good luck wherever you go.

Can you make ISEF without doing research as a part of a University lab or interning? For example, I already have a defined area of interest (robotics) and a project idea; a mentor would be helpful, especially for helping me turn the project into a research project, but I have most of the skills to do the project myself. In addition, are there any engineering projects that make ISEF? Do you have to have a "research paper"? What exactly does a "research paper" mean?
@krystledicristofalo
@krystledicristofalo 3 года назад
yes you can, and yes there are! a research paper is just a paper that follows certain guidelines to describe the phenomenon you observed in your experiment :)

i really wanna do ISEF but i dont know where to start, i want to try and find a cause of a certain auto immune disorder but i dont know if thats a viable research experiment to do, and I certainly can't do it by myself. I'm just so overwhelmed where to start

hi! so the first place to start is with your local or regional science fairs so you can qualify for ISEF. there are def professors conducting medical research virtually rn, so i'd be happy to help you reach out to some! email me at info@myivyeducation.org and we'd love to help xx

I am really interested in ISEF but I was wondering if you could elaborate on process. In my region, the science fairs to qualify for ISEF are in April-May. Would I have to wait a year before going to ISEF or would I use the same qualifying project for ISEF in the same year I qualify? Thank you so much for the great information!
@krystledicristofalo
@krystledicristofalo 3 года назад
from JC: No, thankfully you will not have to wait a year! The project that you qualify with in April-May is the same project that you use to qualify for the same year’s ISEF. Since ISEF takes place in May but later than all qualifying competitions, your qualifying fair would let you know well before ISEF if you become a finalist. The gap between the qualifier and ISEF is filled with paperwork verifying your finalist status and getting you set up.

hi, I was just wondering that when he says “we” does that mean he had a mentor and was also working in a lab? How did he get into the lab in the first place (was it an internship or did he ask to use the lab for the project)?
@krystledicristofalo
@krystledicristofalo 3 года назад
hi! so j.c. said this: "Great question! Yes, I did have a mentor who was also the professor who headed the lab that I worked in. I cold-emailed the professor and I said that I was looking for a position as a research assistant or lab hand. It is important to express your interest in the research that they are doing -- that means just reading their faculty profile and looking them up on Google Scholar to get a sense of what type of work they do." he also sent over a lot more info, more than i can fit in a youtube comment, so reach out to us at info@myivyeducation.org and we'd be happy to give u more info! xx

How likely is it to get to state and/or to get past state without a mentor? It seems the guest speaker in this video talked about some research in a lab?

u can do it! i made it to nationals and won a national competition without a mentor, but try to find one preferably.
