Intel ISEF 2016 - Award Winning Project in Robotic Surgery

Simone Braunstein, a Senior from Dalton School in New York City, attended The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF 2016) for placing first in the New York City Science and Engineering Fair.
She presents her project, A Novel Haptic Actuator for Robotic Surgery: Utilizing Soft Robotic Pneumatic Networks, a Closed Loop Control System, and an Electro- Pneumatic Control Board to Accurately Restore an Operator’s Sense of Touch (ISEF ID ROBO046). Her teacher is Lisa Brizzolara.
Simone won the following awards at Intel ISEF 2016:
GRAND AWARD WINNER: Intel ISEF Best of Category Award of $5,000 (ROBOTICS AND INTELLIGENT MACHINES)
GRAND AWARD WINNER: First Award of $3,000 (ROBOTICS AND INTELLIGENT MACHINES)
GRAND AWARD WINNER: London International Youth Science Forum - The Philip V. Streich Memorial Award
SPECIAL AWARD WINNER: First Award of $1,500 (Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence)
SPECIAL AWARD WINNER: Google CS Connect Award (Google)
SPECIAL AWARD WINNER: Certificate of Honorable Mention (International Council on Systems Engineering - INCOSE)
SPECIAL AWARD WINNER: The Chief of Naval Research Scholarship Award of $10,000 (Office of Naval Research on behalf of the United States Navy and Marine Corps)

I am going to compete in isef hopefully, they are letting middle school students enter. I am from Saudi Arabia and hopefully we can get a big win next year again

Really interesting project but it kind of sounds like she made it long on purpose. Could have cut out about half of it and you would still get it

Unfortunately, a lot of INTEL science projects are not performed by the students. Students from private schools and whose parents are in academics use their connections to hook kids with researchers and professors who help these students.

Deniz K last time I checked teenage girls don't have the equipment to create a robotic survey device in their bedroom

You'd be surprised. She may have interned at a nearby university lab. You should check out some other ISEF projects, people find the most ingenious ways to do this stuff.

Deniz K that isn't how intel wants the projects done anymore, often times when these finalists work at a university lab they are not the ones calling the shots which is not fair to the other finalists who actually invented something on their own or with their schools resources

I definitely agree there-- I heard a lot about things like that happening at INTEL. However, I think it is also unfair to the finalists who actually invented something to assume that no INTEL projects are credible.
