One of the watches that we see most misunderstood is the Manual Wind Chronograph, but more importantly, just the chronograph itself. Our watch expert Creed will explain the correct way of winding a Manual Wind Chronograph, using the Omega Speedmaster Moon Watch.
At SwissWatchExpo, we don't just sell watches! We also provide product education, and help our clients learn how to interact with their watch. Grab your watch and check out our step by step tutorial.

Here at SwissWatchExpo. I'm here to explain to you how to operate your watch.
One of the watches that we see most misunderstood is the Manual Wind Chronograph, but more importantly, just the chronograph itself. Now, one of the things that we should understand about this watch, most people want that seconds hand, the large seconds hand moving around that dial constantly, but with these particular watches, that's not the best thing to do because these things operate on a mechanical wide and mechanical internal.
It's not a battery, so this seconds hand can be problematic for the power reserve. In other words, when you wind this, watch whether it's an automatic or manual, this happens to be a manual watch. It eats into the power reserve. So a watch that may go up to 40 hours without being wound with the chronograph moving may only go for 26 to 32 hours before it stops moving.
Therefore, you're going to have to wind this watch more often. Now with this particular Omega, you do not have to move this crown. You don't have to unscrew it. You don't have to pull it out. All you do is wind it in place. Now this is important manual wind watches have a stopping point. So when you turn that crown, I'm gonna run my finger underneath it and you can hear if you turn the volume up, you can hear that movement clicking that's telling you that the watch is winding.
Now this is important because once this crown stops moving, that watch is fully wound. If it's an automatic watch, you can continue to keep moving that crown and it will not stop. It won't hurt the watch on an automatic, on a manual line. Once it stops, you should stop winding because you can actually break the winding mechanism if you don't.
Some people were very scared to do this, so when they hit that bump for the first time, they're afraid they've overdone it. All you have to do is develop the feel for it. They're fairly tough. You just need to find the stopping point and once it gets to that stopping point, you'll in the future you'll get a much better feel as to where that might be. Now each day you want to wind this watch. Probably about 15 or 20 times. That's not a hardcore thing.
What we always tell people with manual wind, watches do not go by the amount of winds. You simply turn it til it stops. It could be more one day, it could be less one day. It just depends on when the last time you wound your watch. Now, so we've on this watch fully, we want to see this second hand go. The chronograph works like this. This is the start stop feature, so it starts that chronograph in motion. You can see it here and then it stops that motion. You can see it there. This button resets the chronograph like this. You see that second hand jump back and reset, so let's start it.
That's going to continue to keep moving around the dial until you stop it. Now what are the other things that you should know about this watch? The main seconds hand is here. This is the one you see moving on the dial right now. That's the main second sand for the time of the watch. This is the seconds hand. The long seconds hand for the chronograph feature only does not affect the hour hand or the minute hand. So you have our hand minute, hand, seconds hand, which you see currently moving here. The other collectors are the minutes and the hours, so every time this goes around, one time you collect one minute on this dial. Every time this dial goes around one time, this dial moves one click for an hour. In this particular case, start and stop on some watches.
It is the Omega (Speedmaster) Moon Watch. It's the Moon Watch and it has the Moon Rover on the back, which I think is pretty cool. The 40th anniversary, just so that you know which one we've got in our hands.

I have a brand new Speedmaster which was stopping occasionally and was inaccurate when keeping time. It turns out that it really needs to be fully wound for it to proper as advertised. I didn’t wound the watch as expected since I was too gentle when winding it When they say wind it, you need really need to wind it, until the crown stops. Just do it slowly and you will be ok. Now it works perfectly with no stops.(0.5 a second a day loss of accuracy).

Good afternoon, I'm off topic but I need help. My bride gave me a watch from the 70s “Tian Harlan corhmachron ” ,the head only rotates counterclockwise, is this normal? Or should I apply force and rotate clockwise? I'm afraid I'll spoil it because it's a wedding gift, it means a lot to me.

The red dial only goes up to 30 minutes? So the number 10 could represent 10 or 40 minutes elapsed? If so, how do you know how much time has elapsed?

The hour dial jumps in halves. So after 30 minutes the hour dial will move half way towards 1 hour. After another 30 minutes it’ll jump to 1 hour, and so on.

And what does the bottom 6 o clock subdial do when not in the chronograph mode? Does it just stay still?

It makes no sense to me that the actual seconds hand is the small one that is part of the timer trio. The big seconds hand should tell the actual time and the small seconds window should activate only when you use the timer. So all 3 small windows should be timer related. Yet no, for some idiotic reason they mix this up in so many chronographs
@isuzudave

@@LulzRoyce The bezel of the Speedmaster is a tachymeter. The large second hand needs to point to a number on the bezel/tachymeter so you can measure your speed. How would you do that with the tiny hand at the 9 o'clock position?

Per the vid's title, this is about how to wind a watch. I think it's unnecessary to talk about which subdial is for sec, min, hr, etc. If you do, the audience is going to keep watching thinking there's additional insights about winding, which there is not. And that can be a bit confusing, maybe even annoying.

Absolutely NOT . My friend you are misleading people by telling that. First mistake is you wind the watch with the most NO NO move, with one finger only... which bends the crown ! You should always...always wind your watch using two fingers NOT ONE. Second information useful to you is that you should actually run big second hand quite often to lubricate the chrono. parts, instead of lubricant stays in the same potion for too long. Last but not least,,,,,all of you speedy users. Test your watch and time it how many power reserve you will get on the chrono running all the time, and on the chrono not in use,,,,,tell the gentleman the feedback. He might be shocked. Don't forget that if potentially the watch will run of power using chrono when you stop the chrono it can still work for some time without the chorno on. Take care.
