This helped me so much, had an omega watch my dad gave me years ago, which i left in a closet, decided to bring it out and thought it malfunction cos it would tick for a few second hen stop. could not understand why, was thinking maybe to take it into get it serviced. After watching this and unscrewing the dial but not pulling it right out then spinning it about 20 times, works perfectly. Have been checking on the watch every so often and its ticking away. Awesome and thanks for the video.

I came on here to find out if my suspicions were correct and that you can't over wind an automatic watch. Now I know why I haven't had that "the watch is fully wound" feeling that you have with a manual winding watch. Thanks for making the video.

I have never wound my automatics except before I first put one on. Never had one stop on me. Only occasionally have to adjust the time since all mechanical watches gain or lose a little. My Day Date is according to everything I have read is only at + - 2 seconds a day and it keeps time like my nice quartz watches.

I have an automatic movement in my Longines watch. However, it does not have a screw down crown. I simply wind it in the first position just like a manual wind watch. Pulling the crown out one click adjusts the date and Moonphase, one more click to the third position stops the watch, to enable hacking to set the exact time. I just thought the demonstration should have mentioned automatic watches that do not have screw down crowns, which include a lot of so called “dress” watches.

I find it really suprising that such a simple task actually requires a you tube video to help explain the apparent mysteries behind a ticking timepiece. One forgets that 'You Tube' for many, provides the answer to life itself!!

I have two Automatic watches that I find are difficult to wind; A Breitling Navitimer and an Omega Seamaster 300M 2598.80.00. There seems to be excessive resistance when winding them in the clockwise direction. I haven't got the owners manual for either one. Is it possible that these two models are meant to be wound counter (anti) clockwise? They both wind with the caliber fully seated and both "ratchet" and the caliber rotates easily when wound counterclockwise. Is it possible they should be wound counter clockwise?

i would search for the manuals online, unless it's a very old or a weird edition of navi there is 100% an online pdf of the manual somewhere. It may just be a little tough? The navi manuals i've looked at have all said clockwise and on mine if i turn the crown the other way it jsut ratchets.

Hey Adil, Since the SRP line most likely has an automatic movement that is completely normal. You will feel less resistance in an automatic movement than in a manual wound movement. In theory you could continue to manually wind the watch and it would never stop winding, but that would be excessive and cause unnecessary wear. Thanks for watching!

When a mechanical watch is in the first position (all the way pushed in, unless it's a screwdown) you typically wind it clockwise to start it up nd fill up it's energy. You pull out to the second position to change the time or other complication such as a date in which there's a third position for the time (all the way pulled out)
@QuasarPolaris
@QuasarPolaris 2 года назад
That all depends. What is the make and model of your watch? Screw-down crowns have to be unscrewed to manually wind the movement. These types of crowns are typical for dive watches and others which have a high depth/pressure rating. On the other hand, watches with lower depth/pressure ratings will have the ability to be wound without having to unscrew the crown. The reason for threaded crowns is to have a proper watertight seal. This seal will allow the user to take his watch on the pool/beach without compromising the internal components of their mechanical watch.

Well, yes and no. Some automatics can't hand wind - eg the Seiko 5 range. Give them a shake instead. Not all automatics need to be "unscrewed to the first position". That's mainly for dive watches or sports watches with a screw-down crown to help with water-proofing.

My automatic shouldn't be stopping frequently should it?
@CrownandCaliber
@CrownandCaliber 4 года назад
Hey JoeLouis628, It depends on what you mean by frequently. A common power reserve is 48 hours so if you don't wear a watch for the weekend it could stop. We'd recommend making sure it's fully wound, and then as long as you're wearing it daily you should be good. If it is still stopping it may need to be inspected by a watchmaker.
@eiriknss3727
@eiriknss3727 4 года назад
1: Find out what the Maximum Power Reserve (MPR) is on your watch. 2: Pull out the crown and wind it to MPR. You know when the watch is at MPR on a manual watch when you cannot wind it any more (too tight to wind any more eventually), and you tell on an automatic watch when it's at full power reserve from a little sound it makes indicating that the mainspring is fully wound. 3: Start a countdown timer or stopwatch or alarmclock or whatever it is you have so that you can monitor this process. If you go look at the watch and let say it has stopped running 10 hours or something like that before it should according to that watches specification and MPR then it is no longer working correctly and should be taken to an watchmaker/AD/watch repair. Good luck

@@BABA-co9hn wind it up. Keep winding. If it's an automatic you can't over wind it. If it's a manual wind you can wind it up till it gets hard. it's possible that your balance wheel is just stuck. @CrownandCaliber
@CrownandCaliber 4 года назад
Hey Bradley, Generally winding clockwise will wind the mainspring, and the resistance is actually from the mainspring winding up so that is a good thing! The counterclockwise is effortless because its not doing anything.

@@CrownandCaliber what about the clicks he is hearing when winding counterclockwise though? Sounds like a weird watch. Where are the clicks coming from if it's wound by screwing clockwise? On this particular piece. May i ask what piece it is @Bradley Waffa?
@ryanthrelfall1456
@ryanthrelfall1456 3 года назад
@@eiriknss3727 the "clicks" are just a rachet so you can quickly roll the winder back and forward to wind. Rolling the winder (and hearing clicks) isn't actually engaging the gear because your running over the gear instead of engaging it and that's the "click" that your hearing A way to test it is that if you engage the first step by pulling on the little gear (time adjust). Rolling the gear in the direction of the wind will force the watch to tick backwards or stop, since your going "against the spring" Hope this helps 😁
@eiriknss3727
@eiriknss3727 3 года назад
@@ryanthrelfall1456 not really but thank you anyways. That's not what I asked. My watch collection is quite extensive, I have myself just never encountered anything like this. But then again, I only buy watches from the "upper class" brands like AP, PP. Rolex. Tudor, Omega, Panerai and Carl F. Bucherer. Plus i have an heirloom Breitlang from my grandfather that is over 50 years old. I have never encountered a watch that will make clicking noises when you screw the crown in the direction it is not screwed to be wound. Most watches are screwed clickwise to be wound - but not all. But this one clearly winds when you screw it clockwise. So it makes absolutely no sense that it would make any noise whatsoever when it's screwed counter-clockwise unless the movement is caput. Get that serviced.
@ryanthrelfall1456
@ryanthrelfall1456 3 года назад
@@eiriknss3727oh I see what you mean. I have an old manual certina and that's the way it ticks and winds, and undoubtedly the clicks are just a rachet system to allow for fast winding, also acts as a buffer to prevent me from accidentally winding against the spring and busting it but it's an old 1964 movement so it's far from ordinary The reverse ticking and ability to stop the watch via the spring is also very useful for setting the watch for atomic time or for use as a stopwatch. All in all the tricks you can do with a springed mechanism are quite cool.
