This is a really easy method to identify a matching set of coils for a stepper motor when the vendor, or manufacturer doesn't have it, or won't provide it.

Great video, I'm having an issue where my motor will only move in one direction regardless of the command I give it (left arrow=motor moves right, right arrow= motor moves right) I cant seem to find any error in the mach3 settings that could cause my hot keys to be mixed up or anything like that. Could this be an issue of wiring? If so could it be something as simple as A and B wires are flipped?

Tanner, Thank you for your support. I recommend going over the wiring carefully if you already verified your STEP, and DIRECTION settings in Mach. You may have a lead not making full contact, or wired incorrectly which is the most common issue. Thank you, Vince

Though I had an extra motor of a particular type that I had purchased previously. Is there a way to determine the Amperage required to use such a motor?

Ronald thank you as always for your support. There isn't a way to determine the amp rating of a motor if you don't know its specs. This is why I always recommend contacting the vendor for the details of them if possible. Thank you, Vince

Hi Vince. Is it possible to figure out the decoder leads from a closed loop stepper?
@corvetteguy50

Jojo, thank you for your support. Unfortunately this isn't possible. This method works for motors as your matching windings, and even if connected backwards the motor will run as long as your not connecting two different polarities (A+ to B- for example) Have a Happy New Year! Vince

I understand how you identify each matching phase, A+, A+ , or B+, B- . However how do you identify the polarity A+ or the B+ of each phase. For example it's possible to connect the motor and the driver as follows ... (Driver A+, A-) to (Motor A+, A-). All OK so far. Then (Driver B+, B-) to (Motor B-, B+). In this case the polarity of the "B" Phase is incorrect .... Thanks Kevin

Kevin, thank you for your support. You can't identify the phase polarities without a diagram from the manufacturer, or vendor, and it really isn't required. If you connect leads from the same phase backwards using the method illustrated in the video then the the worse that will happen is the motor will rotate backwards which can be corrected through reversing the axis in Mach3. Thank you, Vince
