Seven years late to this party but it's relevant...fixed mine last night. My MIM had a 4-way put in...then noticed that the bridge would not always engage. Stumbled on a YTer that shows a common issue where the cover plate may not have a long enough slot to allow the selector switch arm to travel the full distance it needs in order to engage the bridge (or neck, I'm a lefty). You can either cut the slot longer...or do what I did, and simply file down a slot on the neck of the switch to allow it to travel the needed distance to fully engage the bridge position on the switch. It's a small, unnoticeable slot/notch. So relieved to have accidentally stumbled on this problem AND easy solution.

It's more convenient to use DPDT mini toggle switch or push-pull (or push-push) to 4th sound. You get '"override" solo switch regardless of position of main switch. Much easier for stage (I've been using it for years). Nevertheless, 4th (humbucking) sound is a must for me on Tele-type guitar. Cheers!

@30smsuperstrat 5 лет назад
Totally agree. Even if you do Lindy Fralin's version with series and parallel in the middle two positions, it's still something else to think about vs the push pull or s1 style

I’ve got a Tele Am Pro II and I want to change pickups: do you think I can replace the originals copying the wiring and I will keep the push push feature of the original model ?
@TomiV.
@TomiV. 3 года назад
@@chiccosantulli9949 I suppose that you're addressing me, right? OK, if you change PUPs, your switching system SHOULD remain the same. Only thing to consider is phasing, you can have sound out-of-phase, but that's easy to manage. Follow instructions from pickups' manufacturer(s).
@jagr9228
@jagr9228 5 лет назад
Sounds great. If you added a small DPDT toggle switch to reverse the polarity of the neck pickup you would also be able to have the neck and bridge in series or in parallel with the neck pickup out of phase. You would have 6 tone possibilities. Just my 2 cents worth.

I made this mod but instead of the four-way switch I used a push/pull knob for my tone. Now I just pull for pickups in series. Couldn't be happier with the flexibility. I went from the vintage wiring which was even less flexible than the modern three-way switch.

Great mod, I have a 2014 Fender American Deluxe Telecaster Thinline, with an S1 switch that does the same thing. The 2 pickups in series really fattens the Tele sound!! On a modern player telecaster that comes in the HSS configuration and has a 5 way switch, I modded it to a 7 way switch, that adds neck & bridge together or all 3 pickups together. These mods make teles even more versatile. Thanks for sharing

I've been following your channel for long time, one of the most, if not the most interesting channels here. I know you are on great demand, It would be extremely helpful for all Tele fans if you could show some ways to tame the bridge pick up whilst keeping its characteristic twang. May be new capacitators, brass saddles, change in wiring configuration, and of course, your evaluation and recommendations. Sometimes the charm of a Tele is offset by that overly bright tone, and se all struggle to know what actually works to tame It. Great Channel,

Darrell, last year I got a cheap tele copy and bought parts to upgrade it, but lost interest before I got everything back together. I just got it completed this week, and I replaced everything but the strap buttons. I used a strat neck style pickup and a tele bridge with a 4-way switch. I am completely blown away because I have my favorite strat and tele sounds, as well as two brand new sounds. I was inspired by your video to give this a try, and the 4th position makes it so worth it!

Thanks for the great demo Darrell. Just put a 4 way switch into a Squier Thinline Tele; as you say the new series position lends itself to jazz, blues or just a higher output for a driven tone. I wired it for switch position: 1 - Bridge, 2 - Parallel, 3 - Series, 4 - Neck.

My favorite position is the middle with both pick-ups together and I have heard that some really big Tele guys have said the same thing. So, for me the idea of having the 4th position is the best system of all, making it humbucking is the perfection of the guitar in my view. I am getting ready to mod mine or buy one already having the 4th position with push-pull knob for 4th position. But, for the most part I am electric acoustic player. Schecter has a nice Tele with push-pull knob, but I want a Fender. Probably buy a good used one and mod it myself.

It does have a diff end tone quality yet I find that it was not that huge of difference, still nice sound. I have it in a 2005 telecaster American called AVRI 52’ it has a little more 60 cycle hum that I wanted so I added copper shielding in it to compensate for the louder hum. When you order it it is bare no noobs, no switch , no cover plate extra cost If you build it like it did from eBay.

Hey Darrell I've built a couple of teles, in the first one I put the Freeway 3B3-01 switch in after watching your demo of it, found I wasn't using the out of phase sounds they give, even though I like the series OOP sound just haven't found it useful for anything we play I've since put the 4-way switch in a HH tele and a strat style build with a pair of filtertrons, love them, in both those guitars I put two partial coilspits, one with a 1k resistor for a single coil sound [a bit like PRS do], and the second one 'half splits' them using resistors roughly a quarter of the humbuckers' total DCR reading, sounds more P90ish Love the the series position sound the 4-way gives on those coilsplit settings, it's almost like having another two pairs of hidden humbuckers in there, especially when I've got a fair amount of gain dialled in I'm planning a P90 tele build next with a 5-way wired to give the same as the 4-way with the extra position being a 'cocked wah' sort of sound, there are some great 5-way tele schemes out there you might be interested in checking out, there's an almost legendary one called the Bill Lawrence 5-way circuit though that doesn't give you a 'middle series' position, the Bill Lawrence method give a neck only position that's made a little brighter by using a cap instead

check out the peavy omniac style wiring for a tele type guitar there are various options mostly based around a 5 way "super" switch.. it gives bridge , b+n series , b+n parallel b+n 1/2 out of faze , neck or,,,,, b , b+n series , b+n parallel , n , n+ a 1uf cap ( n+ 1uf capacitor = a bass like sound it's on some teles as an option ) you will need to do the neck pickup mod of giving it a dedicated earth for the cover and remove / split the little shared earth jumper wire for the 4 or 5 switch mod as it will ground out and not work if you don't ,their is a video on how to do this on youtube ,,, and various diagrams for wiring the 5 way super switch depending on the options you want online just search for "peavy omniac style wiring" ,, i have just got all the parts together to do a total rewire like this on my tele ( the vol/tone needed replaced so thought if im doing that anyway ) so now it's getting vintage taper volume pot with treble bleed ,,0 load tone pot with an on,on,on dpdt switch wired to select between a 47 ,,22 and 1uf capacitors ,,, and 5 way super switch wired as b, bn series , bn parallel , bn 1\2out of faze , n ( as i have the ability to switch in the 1uf cap on any position ) ,, that's the plan anyway :) hope this helps in your build it's a must do mod for any tele in my view

I can’t say I find the in-series tone to be a good substitute for a traditional neck humbucker for clean tone jazz, it does seem to offer useful possibilities for pushing amp and or pedal(s) into overdrive or more gain-particularly if you are the “set the amp/pedals on the edge-of-breakup” type of player.

any way to add more tonal options with minimal modifications is game on for me.

I've seen comments on other videos saying that the final wire you have to solder is optional and it depends on weather your cavity has been insulated with that guitar insulating tape that some people use. Can you confirm this because I've been looking at getting the Baja Tele but if I can get this kit and a cheaper tele then I might just do that instead.

Hey great video! I just got a Baja Telecaster myself but I have a question for you if I decide to buy Squier let's say an affinity Squier standard Telecaster would I be able to put that mod that guitar as well or is it better just to get other pickups in my guitar?
@DarrellBraunGuitar
@DarrellBraunGuitar 6 лет назад
+Angel Martinez Hi! If you like the way the Affinity sounds as it is go ahead and keep your original pickups. This 4-way switch works with anything ☺

Firstly, thanks for your always very helpful and interesting videos! ... Not sure if this question has already been asked, but are 4-way switches also suitable/good for SH telecasters? I ask because I'm thinking of modding a Player model, but would be happy to stick with a 3-way switch if it is the better option. Thanks in advance!

The guy from That Pedal Show gets fantastic sound from his Tele. If someone is looking for good rock Tele sounds check him out. I haven't really seen anybody on You Tube come close.

I have a 4 way switch on my tele and I was wondering if u need a specific kind of pickup for a 4 way switch or if any pickup set works for a 4 way switch
@pho2

Good playing, nice feel, great presentation.I play a Strat but my Son plays a Tele, so just trying to get my head round what the mod is. I assume that normal Tele pickup selection is 1,bridge.2,both pickups in parallel . 3, neck. So this mod gives the option of both pickups in series hence acting more like a humbucker ?

I had these put on my 2 ASAT Specials and I wish I had used a pull pot on the tone knob instead. I find that the 4-position switch throws off the tactile feel of switching pickups and I have to look to see where I am more than I'd like.

I put in a 4 way switch and never use the "in series". Maybe it's my pick-ups but it doesn't very good. It definitely has more volume and more mid range but sounds dull to my ear.

What are your thoughts on the 4-way switch versus the 3-way with S1 that's on the Fender Elite? And that solo was totally awesome!
@DarrellBraunGuitar
@DarrellBraunGuitar 7 лет назад
+scozio Thanks! It seems the S1 switch does something different on every model, so I have no idea what it does on the Elite 😄
@zioscozio
@zioscozio 7 лет назад
I think it combines both pick-ups in series. I was just wondering which of the two would feel more natural in actual use. :)
@Joska43
@Joska43 6 лет назад
It is same thing just with S1 you don`t have use for 4 way CTS switch, also Tele is stock 3 way switch you get pup`s in series by fushing down top of volume pot. It is very discrete, all is as at classic Tele

You should try a Baja Tele. In addition to the four way, there's also a phase switch on the volume pot. That with the series setting gives a pseudo Peter Green tone - your playing suggests that may be a sound that'd appeal to you?

As always, love your videos. But for $85 I’ll wire my own four-way switch instead of getting that obsidian set up 😂
@ProCoRat
@ProCoRat 3 года назад
If it was 100% solderless, I think it would be well worth it because the freedom to switch pickups in minutes is great. But since you DO have the solder, it really defeats the purpose. Where this is a good value is if you have wrecked 20 year old pots and wiring and need to replace them all. AT that point, $80 is reasonable because a local shop will gouge you for worse. But if you just want that 4-way switch, this is not worth the money, considering that you have to solder anyway. I have the Jazz Bass kit from Obsidian and highly recommend it, and it was a good value because my electronics needed to be 100% replaced. It was like $50 dollars and the quality is through the roof.
