from start to finish a complete refresh of a old trailer. we go from mild to wild and from stock to a head turning impressive glow! I spent less than $200 and less than 2 days on this transformation.

That my friend is the best on RU-vid for teaching someone like me how to wire a trailer. I’ve watched most of the video’s here on the Tube and most there showing you how smart they are and for me not getting the whole picture. Thanks brother!!!!!👍👍👍👍

I really like your video! I learned that you can wire a white ground wire without having to use a self tapping screw but bulletproof the unstablity of the trailer metal (i have a hf folding trailer) and insure the ground completes the signal with wiring instead. Nobody I have seen wires a trailer like that and I intend to be another that wires it like you! Thx for the video! 🛳⚓

i don't know if you're only putting that in fresh water and you might get away with spray can paint. I can give you my history on my trailer. I'm in Minnesota and my 2006 car trailer by 2016 was getting quite rusty. It had been painted in 2006 by the guy that built it for me. In 2016 I sandblasted what i could get to, then i borrowed a large forklift, turned it upside down and blasted and painted the rest of it. I painted it with a brush, as I consider it more important to get it all covered than how good it looks. I used POR15 paint, including the top coat hoping it wont fade. Long story short, it faded, however the front where my pickup tires throw sand against it is still covered in paint as is the rest of it and it still has the original wood in it and I paint that with deck paint every 7 years nor so. It sits inside 1/3 of time. I thank you for your video as I'm working to upgrade to the grommet style lighting.

Haha seems like you enjoy soldering about as much as I do. But it's a must in my gig- I take care of four boats (2 RHIB, 1 skiff and 1 small Zodiac) as part of my day-to-day for the Province (NB Canada). The boats are used in salt water, summer and winter, and this is the rust belt, so they get road salt too. I use solder and silicone to seal up about an inch past each way on a joint. The fixtures are mostly junk these days and I'd like to see an underwater dive light company like Pelican team up with someone to make trailer lights. Nice work on that trailer, and thanks for the content.

excellent video. The only thing I would add is to solder all connections and then butt connect and then heat shrink. Down here in the Gulf salt water soldering is a must. Also I ran irrigation tubing (black) inside the channels to run the wires and elevated the rear lights to the guide-ons tops to minimize the wiring getting in contact with water!

Help & question? The only light not working on my trailer (7 pin) is rear most passenger red running light. I know its not the bulb because right turn signal and brake lights work. Im thinking I need to check the brown wire to that light. Am I right? The truck is a 24 Tundra.

Just wondering why no shrink wrap on your butt connectors. I re- wired my trailer with harbor freight lights and wire in 4 years the wire was trash. Do you use marine grade wire on/in the trailer? Thanks love the video

With those butt end connectors not being a water proof connection do you ever have any corrosion? I'm looking to rewire my boat trailer and was kinda worried about not having all the connections water proof especially the marker lights on the fenders.

Hey brother, I can't find anyone to answer this question. My marker lights, once screwed down into the aluminum on my trailer, there is 2 sharp connectors that puncture the power wire and that's how they connect. They don't have a harness, do you know where I can find these? Please help.
@intrepidz1981
@intrepidz1981 Год назад
Be careful how much steal you cut out of the frame that supports the boat. Also after making your connections dip them deep in a new bottle of plastic tape. I may dip mine twice so the connections can withstand saltwater longer. It has worked for me many years.

Great job! If I might ask, did you mean for your shell (3rd brake lite) to also blink? There should be an extra line (in Ford's) near the spare on driver frame rail dedicated for the 3rd brake lite for shells or extras. Would have loved to see an at night shot with the boat on the trailer. I can imagine it looks spankin.

@DustinApple

If you use quality wire it won't be a issue. Crimp connections will drain. You can use adhesive heat shrink crimp connections if you want to step it up but it's not necessary.

Great job man, I got a problem on the lighting of my trailer. My trailer has amber turn signals on the side and when I got the brakes they light up as if I had the blinkers on. They also work normal when I hit the turn signal or just running lights. Have any idea what my problem could be?
@desmt4696
@desmt4696 Год назад
I know this is some time later, but the lack of a good ground causes the bulk of trailer light problems. The best way is a ground wire to every light-provided the lights have a ground wire coming out of them. If they don't, check and strengthen your ground to frame connection.

Super job! Just missing some adhesive lined shrink tube for the butt connections since it'll be used in water, but other than that, very tidy work! I've seen trailers where rear lights have been fitted and then the excess wire pulled tight from the front and then cut, leaving no room to remove the rear lights for servicing etc. 🙄 👍🏻
@DustinApple
@DustinApple 4 года назад
I do like the new soldering heat shrink connections but they were not available at the time of the video. Electricity will always follow the path of least resistance. By trying to keep water out you could also easily create pockets that hold water in. High quality wire won't see a problem but my eyes can't tell the difference between high and low quality copper so I don't know it's quality. If you have low quality copper submerged in water for long periods of time then it will corrode at a high rate. If it's in water or not copper is still more conductive than water so there's very little chance of a live wire conducting enough voltage through said water to a ground source and blowing a fuse. Especially when using LEDs. For me the biggest points are length of trailer, total amps, and wire size. Remember you can have to small of wire but not to big so always go overboard with wire size and you'll have less chance of future problems. Hope this helps but I don't believe no matter how hard you try you can keep all the water out. The smallest nick in a liner and it was all a waste of time. Instead I just make sure my connections are tight and let it ride. Good luck friend.
@JohnnyDub16
@JohnnyDub16 4 года назад
@@DustinApple Thanks for your reply. The only improvement you could make is to used marine wire which is tinned to help prevent corrosion, but the cost would be higher. The beauty of the LEDs is the low amps they draw makes cable size almost insignificant but I agree, leaving some breathing space in size is always a good idea. The green LEDs will look sweet under water! I was going to say you could add some work lights to the trailer to help loading at night but I see you already have them on the front of the boat. Very nice set up. Happy new year.

It doesn't matter if you use high grade tinned wire. You're insulating the wire not trying to waterproof it. Been doing trailers this way for 15yrs without failure.
