My bike is currently is a few pieces but I am going to be putting it back together starting tonight and I think that this will be super helpful thanks !
Thank you for this. Staring at my SR185 this afternoon trying to work out what to do with its aging electrical system. Led me to an article about making a wiring loom from scratch which led to googling and finding this. I'm not great with electrics but not stupid either. It took me a long time to understand how an electrical system works, and I still struggle with it because I'm better at moving parts, but this came along at exactly the right time for the problem I'm having. You simplified this beautifully.
I agree with the notion of building simple harness from scratch, looks like that’s what many custom builders do. I talked to a guy who said there is a plug and play setup available for these applications, because a lot of people don’t want to deal with aging wiring systems, from my experience mechanics issues are not nearly as big a problem as “old wiring”. Just testing the Old wiring can cause problems, then when you get it repaired you wonder when the next issue pops… grrr. The old “pre-197x”, is not bad, the 80’s onward have caused me most grief.
Brown and red on the rectifier should not be connected. If you do this, your battery will always need energy even when it's off. Right is - red an battery plus, brown on key position 1. Key position 0 the battery plus with fuse.
Awesome video, just wondering if you know if the 2 white wires coming out of the rectifier can get crossed and be OK? My bike caught fire and melted plug, then I cut it with out marking.
Yeah, for sure. You just connect the tach input signal to the negative side of the coil. It's hard to find a tach that will work on a single cylinder, so make sure you check before purchasing. Thanks for watching!
Hi I wonder if you can help me. When I go to start the bike. As soon as I press the start button the electrics go dead. after a minute I have again electricity (green neutral light back on) but when I press the start button they go dead again... any ideas ???
5olaris88 I don't use one on my dune buggy. I just have a high amp push button connect directly from the battery to the starter. Either way, the starter solenoid is not part of the CDI wiring.
Thank you so much for this!! I’m really close to saying the hell with it and rewriting my bike like this. I have something going wrong somewhere in my system, probably a hidden break or corrosion. Anywho, where would you tie in a simple on off switch as well as just a momentary switch for the starter solenoid?
Glad this was helpful! Not really sure where you'd tie in a starter solenoid. I used this motor in a dune buggy and I just used a high amp push button for the starter and never bothered with a solenoid.
is a sr250 the same wiring as a xt250 same year model do you guys think, im trying to get it going but the wires have been riped out by sumone so im a little lost with it
Hi, I saw that you added a green wire for the tachometer. Which wire does it connect to? Also, these bikes came with a cable driven tachometer. What substitutes do you recommend? Thanks for your assistance in advance.
It's hard to find an aftermarket tach for a single cylinder engine, so keep that in mind. I'm pretty sure I connected the tach wire to the negative side of the coil wire. It's been a long time though so kinda hard to remember! Thanks for watching.
Hi thanks for the info and nice vid. Hoping you can help me: I have a1980 sr250 and it will not keep a charge. What should I look for in diagnosing the reason for not charging? And also: it has a hard time firing up and starting. It has a brand-new spark plug and electronic ignition. It turns over fine but it just won't fire up. Once it is warm it will fire up easier. Can you help me with this?
I'd take a look at the regulator/rectifier (thing with the heat sink on it) if the battery is not being charged. Could be a dud battery as well. For your second problem, really sounds like an issue with your carb.
I just found this and thank you ! I just picked up and 1981 SR185 Exciter with no miles on it(2000k) original everything. Not very exciting, and ugly as it gets,,so off with everything. I’m going to use it for putting around on light trails. Just got it riding better with shock, tires, handlebars and removal of as much plastic as possible. Now the wiring. I want simplicity and reliability, as there is no kickstart. Can these be bump started ? What do you think about getting the components and building a new harness over the winter, like the one above ? Then I have backup ? Also noticed you from the valley, G’day from Fitzroy !
lol... I live in Fitzroy Harbour now :D I used this motor in a dune buggy I created years ago. Yes, you can bump start the motor. I think I have the wire harness diagram somewhere. Send me a private message and we can chat!
@@glassglowz not sure how to send PVT. MSG. Can you send one to me one with an email and I’ll respond with my co-ordinates ? I’ve got the bike running now, however ignition spark comes and goes, suspect battery not 100% but ? Need it to be 92% reliable or its useless to me, i might be way back in the calabogie hills somewhere and have the no ignition spark. We both know that there are “no spark vehicles that stay forever in the hills”. I just moved here and had hoped to use the bike to do some exploring in the area.
@@peterparsons7141 Hey I am in the process of rebuilding a 1981 SR185 Exciter right now and I am also having issues getting ignition spark. Did you ever get the wire harness diagram? Would you be able to email it to me? I looked all over the internet but could not find one. Thanks in advance.
Sorry, I'm really not that great diagnosing issues like this. I'd start by replacing the coil, then if that doesn't work you might need to replace the CDI box itself. I had 2 faulty CDI boxes when I used this motor in my dune buggy. You'll usually find all the replacement parts you need on ebay.
Hi mate! Don't really know fi you're still answering here, but how do I start the engine with the button? I'm stuck there😅😂 I will apreciate if you help me🙏🏻
@@dbdb4274 it would be best if you could find an online forum dedicated to that machine (or brand) and ask the question there. I really can't help you much since I don't own that machine.
