How To Wire AC Unit - Easy Diagram

How to wire an HVAC AC unit. If you were to gut an air conditioner and disconnect all the wires, you could use this video as a template to wire it all back up. This is a video for a straight air conditioner though, not a heat pump. Heat pump wiring would be slightly different. I have used a diagram similar to the one I have drawn a few times before. Once in a while I will come to a 1976 air conditioner that has 4 capacitors, weird un-needed relays, a leaking start capacitor, and an old school contactor that looks nothing like the modern ones. To make things more exciting, anything I touch... Falls apart. The connectors are brittle, everything is rusted and corroded, and the customer is willing to pay for the repair instead of replacing the unit. Okay, no problem :) In those cases I would "gut" the unit. Take all that stuff out of there (besides the fan motor and compressor) and start fresh. I only put in a dual capacitor, 2 pole contactor, and a hard start kit. Then I wire it up the same way I show in the video and the old dinosaur works like a champ! :)

I know this video is old, but this is EXACTLY what I was looking for. My A/C unit was a mess of wires when I opened the cover. None of the wires were organized at all. The capacitor had completely blown and there were a bunch of disconnected wires I wasn't sure where they went. This is the first video I've found with the potential relay and start cap wiring mentioned AT ALL. Very well organized and easy to understand video. I've been digging all day. THANK YOU.

I saw this video, when you just put out there, and I must tell you, that I thank you so much, for this info. God bless you, (my youth). I NOW HAVE A HEAT PUMP SYSTEM, and live in Poinciana, FLORIDA. I can say with confidence, it is because of this video, that I am able to make a living, and help my neighbors. I have learnt thru the yrs., how to completely diagnosed, trouble shoot, and electrically fixed or repair, any heat pump system; And I do it as a COURTESY for my neighbors, who can not afford to pay. You are really one of the best out there on you tube still, thnx again.

I really appreciate you, God bless, and take care. You know there is one question that i would really like you, or any other out there to answer, if possible, and it is this. Can you explain fully about THE "C" terminal, ("THE COMMON"), on the control voltage, to the outdoor unit and the t'stat? Why is it that : when trouble shooting, one has to read between the "c" and the other designated terminals, and NOT FROM the "R", which supplies the power? i just can not get to understand it fully, yet, but it is what i know has to be done. I hope i am making sense. Thnx again.@@WordofAdviceTV

Hey! (To anyone): I hear people call the 24v contactor wire a thermostat wire, but then they'll draw it coming from the control board. Where is this wire really going? We had some mice over the winter and I'm getting the 24 volts coming out of both the control board and thermostat, but not making it to the condensing unit. I'm guessing they chewed through it, but having some trouble figuring out where it goes once it's in the wall from the condensing unit.
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV Год назад
The thermostat wires go from the condenser unit outside to the control board inside the furnace/air handler. You can find these thermostat wires by the furnace and then trace them to see where they go. If not sure which wire to look for, refer to this video to see where it can be found: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ge6pQeFlj3k.html

glendasue70 all a capacitor is, is a device that stores energy. A start capacitor simply bleeds out voltage/current to lag the windings and allow one full rotation in single phase/split phase motors. A run capacitor just helps maintain proper current so the motor doesn't overheat or lag. As far as why they're both wired into the start winding it is because the start winding has higher resistance. The run winding has less resistance and more inductance. Because of this start windings need a run capacitor to help maintain proper current and prevent winding burnout or lag

Shouldn't there be a coil symbol in between the blue and the yellow coming off the thermostat? What you have drawn appears to be a straight short. Those terminals are usually on the opposite sides of the contactor.

Word of Advice TV, what if there is a logic control board connected to the condenser with all the jazz connection you just demonstrated, how do you hook all that up with the other condenser components plus to the contactor?

I got a question...why is it when you wired the common up on the compressor it went to the opposite side of the contacts vs everything else common went to the left side of the contacts..the common on the capacitor went to T1 but the common on the compressor went T2..

Great video! straight to the point and very clear. This is what I'm learning in school right now, we're drawing out the condenser wiring to understand where everything's connectected to. Next week we will start doing drawings of the Air Handler. But this is helping me so much more than our book and I'll watch it over and over. Keep the vids coming, they're great!!

Where is your start relay for your compressor? So you take out your start winding your condenser fan motor is a permanent psc motor so both windings are always in the circuit but for a compressor 230 volt you should always have a relay in there for the start winding

Current RHEEM Thermostat is wired via Legacy/COMM terminals. Technician states wiring needs to be transferred over to TRADITIONAL Terminal connections on Control Board to correspond to thermostat wiring. What, if any, re wiring needs to be done outside on condenser unit.

I'm going to second David Pace's comment below. Best video I've found after two days of watching HVAC videos. AC went down three days ago here in Texas and this wiring diagram perfectly matched my system. Very simple, very clear, solved all my problems with $100 in parts (capacitor and same 5-2-1 booster). The hardest part was keeping red and black wires straight. Red is Run on my system so I wanted as many wires coming off the run connector on the relay to match red as well. Excellent work on this video!

Let me say to young man, you definitely saved me and my family and hopefully my electric bill. I just replace the fan motor after 13 years of living at this house. My fan motor had gone out. And i didnt take a picture or anything. And did exactly what u said. Ive had a number of ac/hvac guys. And nobody caught it. In 4 hours my ac has cooled this house 8 degrees. Never in all my years. Has it cooled liked this

@tigerngai To be honest, I don't have a good answer for that either. I know that's how it's wired but don't know the science behind it. So I will join the party of "would like to hear a response to this" as well :) Hopefully a smart person will come along and solve the mystery for us.

What if your contactor has only one switched side and the other just a pass through? RED or BLACK per diagram would be the switched side contact? Thanks
@ND-fy3wu
@ND-fy3wu 2 года назад
doesnt matter actually as Jay said, but usually ppl like to wire the red one to that switched side, black one to the pass through, 2 poles in this senario just make a double security because the 2 wires are both hot wires.

Please help! I've been trying to fix my outside unit for 3 weeks to no avail. It still won't start up. I made a video of all my wiring that I've rechecked many times: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s7Dgr9Wfh0g.html

Hi Sean! I just now saw your comment as I was scrolling through the hundreds of them.. I watched the video you provided. I hope you got your unit running by now but if you didn't, I do see what the problem is. Or at least one of them as there may be more than one issue. The two low voltage thermostat wires need to go on either side of the contactor. (The part where you show them up close and say that they are not touching) In the video you have them both hooked up to the same side which is a direct short. One needs to go on one side and the other on the other side. I have a video on how to replace a contactor if you want to see an example. If you have a 3 amp fuse at the furnace or air handler control board, that will blow right when you power on the unit.
