Excellent as usual!!! As a long time RV electrician (Marathon Coach Inc. 15 years) your work is great. A slight technical improvement would be to flip your crimper so the round side (as opposed to the pin side)is on the “top” of the ring terminal. The “bottom” of the terminal is solid so the pin cannot separate the folded part of the terminal. This is hard to see as the manufacturers add a thin solid tube over the crimp section. Clearly not a big deal but for future projects a slightly better way to do it. Great looking van!
I'm sorry Cody but you had me chuckling through the rest of that video after grabbing that bulb, it just reminded me of doing exactly the same when I fitted spotlights to come on with high beams on my Jimny. Pain can often be the quickest form of self teaching I find... And honestly I think the fact you include these moments tells us that you know the importance of teaching people to learn through mistakes is just a way of life sometimes!
Your uncle is a smart man. Over 40 years ago I was replacing an antenna on the roof of an old 2 story farmhouse with a metal roof. My feet slipped out from under me and I started sliding down. About halfway down my pants pocket caught on a nail that was sticking up, and that slowed me down just enough to grab the extinction cord that we were using. That saved me from a bad fall.
I don't remember if you've mentioned this in the past, but you did a neat trick that my dad taught me with zip ties. Once you secure it, rather than cutting off the excess, use some pliers and twist the "tail" until it comes off. That way, the part that's left over isn't super sharp, which is especially useful in situations like this, where you may end up reaching into that space some time in the future and forgetting those ties are there.
Codey will you do a series of story's about you and your grandfather I love hearing them and the love you have for him and those time remind me the love I have for my grandparents. Keep up the great work form the UK
Hey Cody, another thing you could do that you may find useful is add a diode inline with that blue wire with a switch downstream of it, do this for both the upper and lower lights, and you can use them as utility lights without your brake lights coming on and without having to put it in reverse.
3M electrical tape is the best. Solder with 3M super 33 is industry standard. It's rate up to 600 V. It should work great for a 12V system. Guys love to act holier than though at home behind their computer.
3M is great electrical tape. But ALL electrical tape ages quickly, becomes brittle and will loosen and come off. It’s not something to prevent long term protection against shorts. If it’s all you have this a zip tie on the end to prevent it from coming undone. But best is shrink tube or shrink tape. They make a pray that works but is messy as hell.
That's funny about the extension cord, that's my most famous saying whether it be with an extension cord or anything I'm dragging on the ground that's gets caught on something. " if i was falling off a cliff that would not of got caught on there", If i didn't have bad luck, i wouldn't have any luck at all"
I have never seen anyone break off zip-tie excess like that. Wild The moment i saw you about to touch that incandescent build I tried to yell for you. Haha great video Cody
Do you think having the reverse switch + the regular switch in parallel for when you need it could be useful? Thanks for what you do with your videos, I always enjoy and/or learn from them!
You can use the switch with a diode to have them as both reverse and auxiliary. With the diode only the spots will illuminate when the switch is on and they both will when put in reverse.
yup though i have yet to your mains fuse box and typically you should have the shore power so far down on the chassis typically needs to be 7-8 foot from ground .. for ya inlet
Proud of you Papa ProHo. You were able to orient yourself to know it was the North wall. I know thats impressive for you ;) love you guys. Great video thnx
Cody you've been grabbing a lot of hot things lately! Great tip on electrical tape. I have to agree. There is some crappy electrical tape out there. Buy the good stuff so it actually performs the way it should.
"A job well done is one of the great pleasures of life" I do agree! And can I also add; A shortcut may save you some time now, but will end up costing you more time when you have to redo it the right way later!
If a vehicle has a 7 way flat RV trailer plug it will have a wire for trailer back up lights . I used this to wire the headache rack on my truck. There is also a constant hot leg I put this on a switch on the bumper and used it to back feed the back up lights so when I'm hooking up a trailer at night after I get under the trailer I flip the switch and light up the area to make my trailer connections.
Tesa tape is amazing for covering wires the high heat for exterior and fleece for interior has changed my world as far as electrical tape lol they sell it on amazon
Wranglerstar i have, look up JDM Astar on amazon for all bulbs other than headlights and if you do headlights, get auxbeam FS-2’s. they’re adjustable to get the correct beam pattern and in the 2 years i’ve run them (almost 75k miles) i’ve never had an issue with them.
I love your vids you’ve helped me so much. Was hoping for a vid on making the harness and you doing it for budget people. Bummer. I had to buy budget items and build my own harness. Then again I’ve got a $1000 van as well.
I have only had one car without a column shift. When we got our impala about 15 years ago my grandpa went out of his way to get a column shift with a bench seat. Took him a while to find it.
Hello, thanks for the video, i have a question, of you dont have a power source near the lights you are mounting, can you solder the new lights harness to the existing, factory harness thats powering the reverse lights? May be you can use the fuse that is provided for more protection on the new ones, these way?
Hahaha "...here I am dating myself....." I recognized your arm raise immediately, but it was for an automatic. If you were REALLY dating yourself you would have fist raised your arm up halfway --- and then pulled it back toward you ---- then raised up a little further --- for a stick. Good clean straightforward tutorial there.
If you use the dollar store tape... A nylon wire-tie at the end of the run, will keep everything in place a whole lot longer. Problem with that tape is usually that the end curls up, and then it just unwraps itself from there. Put a wire tie on that end, to keep the end in place, and it will last as long as any other tape. Still way cheaper than the 'proper' tape. LOL
Have you thought about switching the break light bulbs with the LED bulbs that blink 3x when you apply the break? Our ambulance has them and it really gets your attention. I think Beast did a video on them years ago.
Try out uni-wrap silcone tape I use it on airplanes I work on. its a silcone elctrical wrap with out stickiness its great great great stuff just strech it as you wrap it. Just a second option from electrical tape that sweats stickiness in the heat.
Only thing I could tell you're forgetting, is having your license plate displayed on the rear of your van. Maybe you just left it off for privacy reasons on the video. Love your content Cody.
@@wranglerstar I figured as much. Thanks for everything Cody. It would be fantastic to meet you and the family some day at one of your meet ups. We're just west of you a little ways over in Vantucky.
Forgive me, Cody, but I have to disagree with you on something (an extremely rare thing).Wiring harnesses don't necessarily make it "easy". The last time I had to change a battery cable,it was tied into 47 other wires. I had to cut into the harness, without damaging a anything, to separate the battery cable from the rest to change it. I get what you mean, though. ETA: Just remembered. I wanted to just totally bypass the battery cable with a new one, but there wasn't one long enough available (I was "on-site", not at home). There was no play in wiring harness, so when I cut the messed-up cable end off and replaced it, it would reach the battery post. I suppose I could've just cut open enough to make it reach, and leave it all hanging that way, but that wouldn't've been "proper".
Cody ask your wife if she has a seam splitter I use them to split wire harness while doing wire repairs it's a really good tool for the job and you will reduce wire damage from those razor sharp knives
Great video, I came here hoping you could maybe help me out. I installed reverse LED pod lights on my truck and I tapped them into the reverse line from the 7 pin trailer connector. They turn on anytime i put my truck in reverse like i wanted HOWEVER, the LED pod lights turn off any time I hit the brake. Any thoughts as to why? Thanks a million
Why didn’t you use the switch to allow you a chance to turn on those lights when you weren’t in reverse? I use a similar setup on my F150 to illuminate things while camping.
Is that the Para3 lightweight or regular?.... I've been looking at them for a while, and just found a sale on the lightweight version Just wanted to get your take.... Do you have an affiliate link on blade HQ?
