Now you can connect your Vortex Wireless 2 to a sound module or synth that has Midi DIN sockets without a midi DIN cable by using 2 wireless midi CME Widi Masters.
Hi. First of all I would like to thank you for posting such amazing and useful videos I'm pretty new to midi. I have few questions. Please reply if possible 1) I just wanted to connect my roland xps 30 to vortex and play the sounds of xps 30 from vortex. Please guide how to setup the whole thing. 2) Is it possible to play wirelessly ? 3) Since Roland xps 30 already has a usb slot, can I plugin vortex dongle directly to it ? 4) how can I change sounds and other controls of Roland xps 30 from my vortex. Thanks in advance. And extremely sorry to bother you with these basic questions
@jashpaldatta4743 Thanks 😀👍 To play wirelessly you will need a USB host (like the Kenton)... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p9ytdfWNbYk.html Or 2 Widi Masters... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4TWOAc-xOS0.html The USB slot on the xps 30 says it is for memory sticks and is not a midi host port, so it will most likely not work with the Vortex wireless dongle. Download the xps 30 midi implementation chart from the Roland website, page 66 shows the midi commands for the xps 30. Also download the xps 30 parameter guide, this has the sound patch list which shows the program number, MSB and LSB that you need for the program change settings for the Vortex pads. Note that the PC number starts at 1 instead of 0, so the program number is the PC number minus 1.
Hi, I use the DeepMind 12D and I'm trying to connect it. I haven't tried this method yet, but, my idea was since it has a USB MIDI out it would be able to connect to the Alesis dongle, however that didn't seem to work (or would I need to change some settings)? I also have a MIDI to USB box but that needs to be powered externally and I would like to use as little connections as possible (can't afford roadies yet, haha). So am I correct the only way to connect would be the way you show here? Or would it be worth to do some more research and see if I can connect through the USB MIDI?
Hard'n'Heavy Playlists Hi, the USB port on the DeepMind 12 is a client port, not a host port, so won't work with the Vortex Dongle. Other than using a midi host device (which like you say needs its own power source), the only real option currently is to use a couple of Bluetooth Midi 5 pin Din adapters (the solution in my video). Here I use Widi, but of course there are other makes (like Yamaha and Roland) to choose from. Interestingly, I can use the Dongle and a Bluetooth midi 5 pin Din adapter at the same time, so control my DAW software (with the Dongle) and my Roland synth at the same time.
Imuzik Workstation Personally I use either 2 widi masters (one connected to the midi din out socket on the vortex and the other connected to a synth) or a widi master (for the vortex) and a Widi Bud Pro (connected to my computer).
Hey man, fantastic vid. Your channel has been invaluable to me when messing with my vortex. I have a quick question thought: I’d heard that the Widi master requires a powered midi out port, but when I asked Alesis support, they said that the midi out port on the wireless 2 was not powered. But in your video it seems to work fine. So the widi master plugs up to the vortex II just fine and is powered with no problems?
@Red-fu4li Thanks, I'm glad you found my channel helpful 😀👍 Yes, my vortex wireless 2 midi din out socket is powered and I regularly use a widi master plugged into my Vortex and it has always worked fine without any problems. The powered midi din out socket requirement means a widi master won't work with a sound module or synth that only has a midi din in socket (like some Korg instruments).
@@IbandUK Gotcha, thanks for the reply! Glad to know it works. A year ago I saw your video about using a midi USB host with the vortex’s included USB but this seems like a better option
Dear Sir. I am having Casio CTX 9000IN which has a USB B port (similar to printers) as host output. How do I connect my vortex wireless 2 with it? So I can play the synthesizer sound through vortex wireless 2? Thank you for your excellent tutorials
@ibanduk Dear Sir sorry to bother you again. I have a Casio CTX 9000IN keyboard which has a USB B TO HOST port. I have done as you described to connect it to my Alesis Vortex Wireless 2 but even after that no sound is coming from keyboard on pressing keys of the keytar. Only thing different from your hack is the midi USB host. I couldn't find the Kenton MKII but got Doremidi Midi host instead. I have photographs of my setup but unable to share here. Please share your email id if possible so I can share the pictures. Please guide me what am I missing Sir?

Thank you for this, you explain things in a sober, slow and precise way, the way it should be. :D Allow me to ask another question. How does this work when you d like to connect the vortex 2 to several synths (daisy chaining) via CME Widi Masters pls? or would some sort of multiple midi host interface be the cheaper solution? *I'd like to control several synths/drum machines - all do own midi ins/outs and an Octatrack as a master sequencer.. It's a little boring being on stage behind keyboard stands, so I figured out that The Vortex2 would give me a little more flexibility when it comes to performing/moving on stage.
Christian Clement Hi, thank you for your feedback, I'm glad you like my video. Thanks for your question... There are several ways you can do it with the vortex wireless 2... 1. You would need 2 CME widi masters and a Midi Thru Box. Plug the first widi master main adapter into the vortex midi din out socket. Plug the main adapter of the second widi master into the midi din out socket of any synth (this is to power the widi master), plug the second widi master sub adapter into the main adapter and then into the Midi Thru Box midi din in socket. Connect your synths to the Midi Thru Box midi din out/thru sockets with midi din cables and then turn everything on. Or... 2. You would need a Midi USB Host and a Midi Thru Box. Plug the vortex wireless dongle into the usb port on the midi usb host and use a midi din cable to connect the midi usb host midi din out socket to the midi thru box midi din in socket. Connect your synths to the midi din box. Check out my video on the Kenton midi usb host and vortex setup.... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p9ytdfWNbYk.html If all your synths midi din out sockets support midi thru then you could possibly chain them by connecting the midi din out from one synth to the midi din in of the next synth instead of using a midi thru box, although it is also possible that the midi signal might become weaker as it passes through the chain and notes/messages might be lost.
chicobenjy Hi, here in the UK, DV247.com sell them (£21.50). I would imagine they can sell them to people outside the UK. Otherwise I would suggest contacting Alesis support on the Alesis website site (www.alesis.com) for information about your your local supplier.
Hi, thank you for the video. I'd like to connect my Vortex Wireless 2 to a synth using this method of 2 wireless midi CME Widi Masters. You explain here that one of the main adaptors needs to be plugged into the Midi DIN out socket on the sound module/synth. Is that solely to provide power to the sub adaptor that's plugged into the Midi DIN in socket? Unfortunately, I am already using the Midi DIN out socket on my synth. However, my synth has an unused Midi DIN thru socket that's able to provide power. If I plugged the main adaptor into the Midi DIN thru socket instead of the Midi DIN out socket, would this still pair with the other main adaptor that's plugged into my Vortex Wireless 2? If so, I'll probably go ahead and purchase a couple CME Widi Masters.
J Hi, Widi masters are powered from the midi din out socket, so if you are sure your midi din thru socket also can provide power (this would the norm) then you should be able to use the midi din thru socket instead. Alternatively, the widi jack requires a usb power source, rather than a midi din socket power source so may also be an option (just need to order the widi jack with midi din cables). The Widi Master, Widi Jack and Widi Bud Pro all auto pair with each other.
You've hooked up a synth with 2 WiDi Masters. Can the Vortex still communicate with the dongle or does the Midi DIN connection cancel the BT? I've got the dongle to work on an iPad. Wondering if both can be connected simultaneously - a synth and the iPad. Cheers!
Ralis Kahn Not on the Vortex 2. There are several ways to do it in a DAW on a computer. Some synths and sound modules have a global (omni) channel, often midi channel 16, that allows you to send the vortex keys to all 16 channels. So if their sounds are made up of 4 or more parts (tones), it might be possible to create a work around that way.
Ralis Kahn Hi, if you press the split button one end of the keys sends on one channel and the other end sends on a second channel but the Vortex can't send on more than one channel on the same key. Each pad can send on a different channel to the keys (or other pads) but once again, only on one channel.
Adithyan J Hi.... 1 x vortex wireless 2 1 x sound module (or synth) with midi Din In and midi Din Out sockets (the micro Q I used here is about 20 years old) 2 x CME Widi Master (available on Amazon)
Hi! Thank you for this video! Can you help me please with connection to a Korg pa4x. I can’t have control on volume ( slide ). The slide Don’t make any change. What cc control is needed? Thank you!
MB ArtsProductions Hi, I'm glad you like my video 😀👍 volume is cc 07 (page 896 of the manual). Note that cc 07 changes the volume for a specific midi channel, so if you are playing a sound using the lower zone on the Vortex (which is factory set to midi channel 2), the volume slider will not change the volume of the sound because it is factory set to midi channel 1 (the factory set midi channel for the upper zone).
@@IbandUK thank you for answering my question. With that answer, i won't have to buy the wireless midi. I think i'll just use my tablet for my keytar sounds. Thanks a lot. 😊 You help a lot of people. Keep it up and good luck boss. 😊
General R Hi, the Vortex wireless 2 is a midi controller, so it has no sounds of it's own. It can be connected to a computer to play many types of music software on a computer or it can be connected to an ipad/iphone or to a synth/sound module.
kevin jimenez Hi, the Vortex is a midi controller with no sounds of its own so you couldn't connect the Vortex to a ME guitar pedal. The Vortex needs to be connected to a synth, sound module or music software on a computer to create sound. You could use the Vortex to play sounds on a synth, sound module or music software and send that sound from the synth, sound module or music software to an ME guitar pedal though.
Hi, thanks for doing these videos, they really help alot. I was wondering if you could possibly help me. I just bought this keytar with a view to use it to control some presets i have made on my korg triton via 2 widi masters. My question is, the triton has a bunch of "real time control" knobs which change things such as the attack, cut off, release etc. These are absolutely crucial to use when im performing so is there a way to set the faders on the alesis editor to control the real time knobs on the triton for live performances? I'm very new to midi so apologies if this is a basic and silly question.
Shaun Hardman Hi, the real time control knobs use midi control commands that we call CC# numbers, so you can copy the real time control knobs of the Triton on the Vortex-wireless-2 by using the same CC# numbers. It took me a while to find it (korg are terrible for documentation) but you need page 223 of the Triton parameter guide (korg website) for the CC# numbers. Attack for instance is CC#73, so set the CC# on a Vortex fader to 73 and that fader will now control the Attack on the Triton as if it was a real time control knob on the Triton. You might want to watch my Vortex preset editor tutorial videos if you haven't set up a Vortex preset before.
@@IbandUK thanks so much mate. Really appreciate it an yeah I've watched all your videos. The CC# message thing makes sense so i will give it a go and see how it works out. Thanks again
@@IbandUK there is one specific thing im trying to do that isnt a as simple as assigning a CC#. (In the triton sequencer mode i have all my songs/setlist lined up 1,2,3,4 etc. The midi implementation chart says i can assign a "song change" which will allow me to scroll through the songs. At the moment when i press the up down increments on the keytar it just changes the program rather than the from song 1 to 2 to 3 etc. I have all the manuals in front of me with the relevant information but struggling to understand it. If we exchange emails then i can send you photos of what im trying to do, along with pics from the manuals i have infront of me and that way seen as you are a wizz with midi you probably will know what to do. My email is shaunhardman1989@googlemail.com if you could drop me a line, id really appreciate it.
Hi, my friend, software synths do not normally support midi program change commands, so if you want to use the Vortex to change the sound it is playing when connected to a DAW or computer software then you have to link the vortex pads to switch between midi tracks or, like I have done in Ableton, by using a instrument rack.
