Have you ever seen a fabric that you loved but you weren’t sure at that moment what you’d make with it, so you felt unsure about how much to buy?
Or maybe you have a length of fabric but all the patterns you look at seem to need more fabric so you think you don’t have enough?
Getting used to the fabric requirements you need to make yourself certain types of garments gets easier with time and practice, but there are some useful things to bear in mind and consider when working out your fabric requirements and then laying your pattern pieces out in preparation for cutting them out.
In this video, I want to help you understand how to work out how much fabric you personally need for a dressmaking project, taking into consideration various different factors.

Great video, Lauren! Not sure whether I missed them, but I would add two further insights: If you want to do pattern matching e.g. on a plaid fabric or a large/obvious print, you may need to take account of the "pattern repeat" and buy a bit more fabric accordingly. And if the garment has pockets and facings that won't show on the outside, and you're tight for yardage (or it's really expensive fabric), you can cut these out of a plain fabric of an equivalent fibre, e.g. using a plain cotton lawn for facings or in-seam pockets with a patterned cotton fashion fabric. Hope this helps!

That was great information! I particularly love the idea of mapping out the width and placing the pattern pieces within. I never follow the recommended pattern placement. Especially with knits that are usually very wide. I like to turn in both salvages towards the center to make two folds for cutting. Saves so much fabric! Love your tutorials! Thanks so much! 🥰

Great advice. Thank you. Perfect timing as I am just about to try and squeeze the Davenport out of 2.5 metres! Already decided against shoulder frills and will use a contrast for inner yoke and pocket bags. Excited to see if I can do it.
