How to wrap extension cords, cables or hoses like a pro.
This easy, tangle free method of over / under is not only easy
to learn, but will keep your cords in top shape, and free of the
dreaded "memory" that can frustrate even the most experienced of us.
This over & under method of wrapping is used by professional audio and
sound technicians, and many other pro's that handle many cords on a daily basis.
Watch this video and learn (like I did) from those that know the secrets.

Brian, I've watched several videos on coiling hoses and cords with this method, but it's always confusing to do in reality. Finally I saw your video - the best one of all! You clearly show how to change the hand position for the "under" loop. You make this clear and easy to actually follow in real life!

Yeah it's ridiculous how difficult it is to emulate when in real life. It's like trying to learn rope knots from a 2D diagram, just breaks the IQ.

Great video, Brian. As supported by @DenverDave203, you maintained the camera at a perfect angle that resulted in a clear and easy-to-grasp demonstration of this technique. Others have executed this method while facing the camera full-on, making it more difficult to learn.

1 if you are able to hold the cable the whole time it will make your wrapping go faster and this is usually easier if the end faces away from you. 2 in the entertainment industry we do this all the time and we start at the female end so that you can use the male end to make a granny knot around the cable and hold it together and then when you untangle it the knotted/kinky part of the cable is not near the tool or microphone you just plugged it into.
@BuildswithBrian

Thanks, those are great tips, I appreciate hearing from those in the profession that use these techniques every day.
@jfratis9081
@jfratis9081 2 года назад
In the entertainment industry no one puts a knot in a cable. Every cable has a tie-line on it. Power cords are also coiled over-over clockwise. It doesn't matter from what end.
@BuildswithBrian
@BuildswithBrian 2 года назад
I agree, knots are a bad idea. As far as the over over technique, I can’t offer an “educated” opinion on that one. I’m not in the entertainment industry, but curious as to why power cables are wrapped differently?

This might be the best demonstration of this technique I've seen yet. Most of them don't show the hand grabbing it so I was grabbing it the same way every coil and trying to turn the cord. I'm like you used to be, mine are a mess. I was going to use the daisy chain method but will give this another shot.

@BuildswithBrian

@@woodstream6137 Most likely it’s because the cord is cold, we all have the same problem, if you let it warm up and stretch it out it usually works fine, of course it depends on the quality of the cord in the type of plastic used for the cord jacket, hope it works out for you

Full Mark's! Video composition is excellent including framing, step motion-captions, seamlessly zooming out during toss. Educational techniques are excellent with detailed positioning guides, repetition, and sequential partitioning. Hey did you learn educational techniques. You engender trust, even in a short video. I can trust whatever you present (perform) will be well thought out, explained, and demonstrated. Now how about some diagrams of the cord's internal wires motion and twists caused by various wrapping styles. Explain and demonstrate how we goofed up and how to do it properly. Reorient our visual and tactic intentions as we influence the internal wires during wrapping. Give us X-ray vision into the cord's structure and its movements. You think from the viewers perspective. You plan successes for us during each segmented phase of the process. I muted you and showed my wife (killer & short circuit master of all cord's, headphones, vacuum cleaners, & extension cords - she can knot up anything without trying!) the video. She got it!! She was so excited she practiced on 8 different extension cords while I played tripod for her phone video. "Go get another one" she said. This is from a long history of disappointing failures which made her avoid cords and ropes. That is a grand video. 4 thumbs up!
@BuildswithBrian
@BuildswithBrian 3 года назад
Thank you for your kind words, I just teach things the way I would like to be taught. No special skills there. And I’m sorry but I don’t think I’m qualified to discuss all the technical details on why a wire twists the way it does. That’s a bit over my pay grade 😆 Thank you for watching, I am pleased that the video helped you and your wife 👍

This is how cords are wrapped for shows. However, if you need to wrap hundreds of cords, the method is different. Instead of the end of the cord facing toward you, it is facing away. Then you can just roll the cord over or under with just a twist of your thumb, a hell of a lot faster when you get good at it.
