Instead of writing a cliffhanger, think about writing a "teaser" at the end of each chapter. Like the book description lures the reader into the story, the teaser lures the reader into the next plot point.

100% agree about Lost. I loved watching it until the last season when it became obvious they weren't going to resolve any of the cliffhangers they had set up during the entire series.

Your just gonna have to make the book really fast paced then so they keep turning the page expecting an end. Luttke do they know it will leave them hanging

Terry Pratchett. All his Discworld books are written without chapters. 😁

Can you do a video on how to end a chapter so the reader will want to continue reading but each chapter doesn't end in a cliffhanger?

Great, thanks Shaelan. The Lost effect - arghh - only recently got round to watching the whole box-set, spent about half of it saying 'have the writers lost the plot?' - only to get to the end and decide they really did...

Try the series "How to Develop a Book" on Reedsy's channel. It's got a few episodes, but I think the second episode (Characters) covers your question pretty well.

The DaVinci Code had a cliff-hangar at the end of most chapters. Each chapter was also short which made it much easier to read.

As a kid I read a series where the final line in the final book was 'And hesitated.' It was just extremely weird in many ways. To this day I don't know exactly what was going on at the end. Kind of awesome though. I feel like books have gotten less weird--authors are less willing to write/publishers are less willing to published extremely 'out there' stuff.

I forgot where I've seen this, but some author wrote a false alarm cliff hanger in 5-6 chapters in a row, then wrote another cliff hanger, but made it a real threat catching the readers off guard.

"Blood Moon" ("The Ravenscliff Series" book 3 by Geoffrey Huntington)- I've read it years ago, but as far as I remember, this thing ended on a cliffhanger. I'm not sure if it's going to be continued, but the last one was published like ~15 years ago?

It's not a novel but "inception" ends on a cliffhanger probably

The TV series - Fortitude - uses cliff hangers well, and is even able to dump 'main character' people during plot twists. Done highly successfully I think.

The greatest cliffhanger I've ever read would be the second book of the Red Rising trilogy, Golden Son. I almost cried it was so sad.

In the Alfred Hitchcock film North by Northwest, a cliffhanger was used at the very end.

I am having trouble determining where my chapters should start/end. I have such strong inclination to end chapters at a satisfying point (which feel natural to me) that changing that seems rude and the break unnatural. Any advice?

Did you do something with the audio? You sound much clearer in this video, and there isnt as much background noise!

I'm actually doing my first book I started a month ago and I can't really wright that well so I decided to just put my chapters on youtube as I speak them to the reader and it's a book that's an action slash suspense thriller not so much horor it's called forrest of the forsaken and it's basically these two guys who are brothers with amnesia and are ment to help over throw a dictator in the village they land in and must find out the truth of there so called lost and dead master who want to try and kill the brothers think Jason bourne sires with a little bit of fullmetal alchemist
