Things I learnt from this video: Step 1 (5 -10 mins): - Create a notion database (or just a checklist) with the mark scheme, split into intro, main body and conclusion Step 2 (20 mins): - In the intro, set the scene (without repeating the question itself). Say the importance of the topic - In the main body, work out what order you want the paragraphs based on the marking criteria - In the conclusion, talk about the wider context of the topic Step 3 (30-60 mins): - Make a central point for each paragraph (can be a quote or study too!) - Have a column for quotes or sources Step 4 (60 mins) - Start writing your essay - based on the detailed plan we already have - Just need to elaborate on the key ideas / sources which we have already decided on Then take a break (hours - days) Then come back and do a 30 min review of your work
I have a low attention span and really struggle with getting the important points from a video, so this comment and you made on the How I Remember Everything I Read video have been lifesavers! I really appreciate it!
The marking criteria trick (copy pasting the marking criteria to structure your essay) is spot on! When I was marking essays as a university tutor, I could only really award points for answering the marking criteria. It pained me to not be able to give points to well written essays that didn't answer the criteria.
Hardest part is finding the right resources in social sciences and reading through a lot of stuff, hoping there will be something you can use in there ...
This is how we write articles as journalists. Such a smart idea, the first 5 minutes of building the structure make it much easier, in addition to quotes and sources' statements. In a few months, you just became one of my favorite RU-vidrs ❤
I cannot thank you enough for this video! Yes, currently I am writing a 6000 word MA essay within an only few days - hectic (reading foundation has been laid thankfully). But even in future when I have more time available - this structure will help so much in just getting started! Those first words on a blank page are daunting. This helps my mind breathe.
I recall you demonstrating similar in the recent BASB course and I loved it. Thank you for recording and publishing it. I am just adding this to the course I teach, Research Methods for Advanced Engineering, in a Masters degree programme, as required watching for all of my students. Absolutely fantastic. Thank you so much again.
I finished my master's in London (Global Political Economy) and now I am again in school, this time following my true passion, that is Counselling. I love studying and not sure when I will end with schools :) I study on my own as well, gathering knowledge it's a great passion of mine! Great video, so rich in valuable information!
As someone who is literally taking a break from her GPE readings (and lowkey dying from the unit) to watch this video, cheers to you for finishing your masters and good luck in school!
I used this method for my thesis and it works really well! I would do this process per chapter. The spreadsheet is a bit bigger, and it takes a bit longer than 3 hours - especially if you haven't read and taken notes yet - but it works like a charm! When you're working on a larger writing project, it's so helpful to just imagine you're writing a string of smaller essays. You're just calling them chapters. If this is your own thesis - it's highly likely that you're going to be creating the elements of your second column yourself: but don't skip! This will help you sort out your argument. Highly recommend this strategy for your thesis!
I actually quicken the process a little, I spread a net out look up a couple of books, articles etc find articles that work with what I'm working on. Build a framework of what I want to say a simple one that works is beginning which is explaining the issue, 3- 2 main points that I want to state( this also helps me look up what I need to know to get through the essay.) An outro. I've used this for so many different types of papers over the years. Takes about 2 hours 3 at max. I just write them on notepad. Not convinced on how notion would speed up my process.
Your content is the best, your motivation! I’m not even in uni and it just felt like I wanted to do an essay to apply this 😂Congratulations on your 100k subscribers🎉🥳 you will quickly grow much more as your content and your attitude are so incredible !
Hello Elizabeth, one of your video on taking college notes on macbook helped me a lot saving lots of my money.. I already had a old ipad and was tempted to purchase a new ipad pro M1 again 😁 seing the apple promo ads . ha ha 😁. Later i realized making notes on Macbook is so nice & fast ( thanks to my typing speed & also your helpful video ) and i saved my money . That money i used to purchase a new iphone 13 pro max ( Sierra blue ) . Thanks a lot to you for all valuable informative videos 🙏🙏
I wish I watched this at the beginning of my Master of Teaching. I’ll test this out for my electives. I have at least 8 papers to write. I’m keen! I might also see if I can use this for my students 😱
thank you very much for explaning and making my life much easier , before , my essay can take forever due to all of this....... , but you made this so much easier , to make this layout to use for my studying
This is a fantastic system and exactly the reason I keep a commonplace book, similar to Ryan Holiday's note taking system. It makes future work a case of just bringing all your reasources in line and you stitching them together with some of your own words
Hi Elizabeth! Thank you so much for this useful and inspiring video. Would you also give us a bit more insights on your research process? How long does it take you to conduct your research and find all these useful quotes and studies?
Thank you, this is a brilliant way of structuring an essay because it allows you to process each section without holding the entire essay in your mind at once. 👌❤ Note that you can do this in a spreadsheet just as well. I colour code each section to remind me if I happy with it or not.
Hi Elizabeth your growth on RU-vid has been super inspiring to watch, so much so that I uploaded my first very crusty video today so thanks for that and all the best!
I have this system where I read the required reading, and put the elaborate notes as well as a simplified summary + the exact source with page numbers into a table. Then I can sort of copy paste the essay into being. But I think I’ll add some of your points into my system (like the point criteria). Thank you!
I just love your way of study technique s... they are so so relevant and quite practical to follow... I just love watching and listening to you contents... I do not spend much on youtube but I never miss your contents, just amazing and so practical
Thank you Lizzy for this video 💌 !! Surprisingly, my method of doing essays much resembles yours but while your ones have to be precise and on point, mine are literary ones so they need more prettification, (if you will) Also I use the same breaking down and compartmentalising technique for learning anything I need to learn and this system has helped A LOTTT I have a small request as an ardent subscriber of yours , can you please make a video about the general-getting-acquainted-with-and-comprehending-notion video because I really wanna combine all book quotes and my opinions about them as well as plethora of information I consume everyday!!! I’d be immensely grateful 🍇💌
Agreed! I’m so intimidated by Notion but I desperately need something better than a word doc, my notes app and my reminder list to sort everything out!
I find marking schemes often use really elaborate language that I don't often process well, so I copy and paste it in to chatGPT and ask it to reword it into colloquial language. I'm then able to split it up into understandable chunks.
This video is helpful indeed, but there is no way it's 3 hours work. You also usually need to read about 10 academic materials to quote from, which in no way would take you only 60 minutes to do....
Nice tips but I find this so difficult to get my head around this. Is there a writing course people have done to get this awesome experience? Been a while since I have finished highschool learning to write an essay
Wow, amazing,Elizabeth, i have to say that you're so smarter than the rest of us, i remembered when i was graduate student as Chinese philosophy ten years ago, i had big headache about graduate essay😂💖
You can trait cut down on your time finding sources using AI. I like to use Google Gemini to say "X is my claim, I need you to find 3 sources that support it and two that contradict out" and then I'll give more criteria if there is any.
This is such a great approach. Do you have any tips for using this on bigger projects such as longer theses for masters or doctorates? You are brilliant. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.
Love this video! Thanks for sharing. I just watched last Ali’s video where you were giving a presentation. I was wondering why don’t you also create a similar video about the processing of making engaging presentations and prepare for it? Thanks!!! ☺️☺️☺️
Ooh Thank you a lot You speak so fast and simple I don't regret any single video of yours that I watched Beautiful, smart and very talented girl You look like a French girl actually and I really like it, I love your long hair Please continue posting such videos 👍
I'll try to apply something similar to article writing, I love how structured it is! I'm about to implement Zettelkasten for the first time and I was thinking of using obsidian, but notion is tempting after seeing your videos. We'll see.
