It’s tough to write a synopsis.
But they are hugely important.
As a querying writer you usually need to include one with your cover letter and sample chapters. Agents check them to make sure you have a complete story to tell. And later, as a published writer, you still need to write them for book proposals and new deals.
In this video I share the actual synopsis I used to query agents a few years ago (I’ve fast-forwarded parts so there are no Dark Pines spoilers!). It’s not a particularly great synopsis but it shows the story arc, the main characters, the conflict, the resolution. It was good enough for agents to find the submission in their slushpiles and request the full manuscript and ultimately offer representation.
A novel synopsis is a technical document. It’s not meant to be exhaustive or exciting. Most writers (me included) find them difficult and dry to write. They don’t have to be perfect but it’s important that they don’t raise any red flags.
I hope you find the video useful. If you have any questions, requests or suggestions please do leave them in the comments section.
