I remember learning Greek at university 20 years ago, but the old Greek. Alphabet stays the same I think. And I'D LIKE TO KNOW IF there is or not a cursive type for handwriting, as in the Latin or the Cyrillic alphabets (for both the capital letters and their corresponding lowercase letters). THANK YOU!! PD: I never stop from getting surprised/admired about the similarity between Greek phonetic and the Spanish one, which is my native language.

LONG COMMENT WARNING (συγγνώμη!) I think it would have been even better if you could have shown the different ways some of the letters would be written, like β (with the tail) δ (with a flat horizontal line on top) θ (ϑ) κ (as a "u" and that's why learners should be careful when writing upsilon and not add a tail on the side! Though I liked your ϰ which learners often confuse for χ!) λ (with the left leg below the line) π (as ϖ) τ (like an iota but with a curl backwards at the top and then one forward at the bottom) χ (with one line curved, the other straight) and ψ (like an English cursive "y"). Then there's Ϗ which some people use for και (I think it's a Greek ampersand [&]) and ȣ for ου which I've seen on some signs - especially small street signs. Aaaaaaannnnd finally, some people seem to join στ together so it looks like οι with a line on top... and a few other letters are often just joined by one line. I think αι is often joined, no? I personally always join από slightly. Then again, it would have made the video A LOT longer, so I understand!

ȣ nowadays is only used by the church; you will see it on images of Saints. No one will use it in everyday life. The joint letters is something personal; personally I join all of my diphthongs (except οι), but they don't teach that at school. It's just to save time when writing fast. κ for και is usually κ΄ but that is only for quick writing (e.g. note taking). There are many variations for each letter, and then there are some special characters or accents in some dialects but no one needs to learn/know those.
@EasyGreekVideos
@EasyGreekVideos 3 года назад
The θ, or ϑ, I did show - it's how they teach it at school, and I thought it's weird! As for the others, they're not so common, and at any rate, they're beyond beginner level. But thank you for the comment, it's actually really informative for people who'd like to delve deeper into the intricacies of the written language.

Πολύ ενδιαφέρον βίντεο! Ι was surprised to see alpha just like the English a, I do it like a gamma on it's side, (so it looks like a fish swimming to the left) as that's how we were taught in biology lessons at school, also I do beta like a mini capital like the printed version, Is that a normal variant or a bit odd in Greece?
@EasyGreekVideos

Some people write the alpha the way you describe, yes. There is a variation of the beta, it looks like the printed version indeed: β - notice the little tail at the bottom though.

Hi, my background is in ancient Greek, so my capital omega would be the one you say you would never use. Do you know when the "modern" way was introduced?

It's exactly the same. Just two font types of the same letter. The one Dimitris uses is the simpler one, not a newer version introduced. Both ways are correct.
@altralinguamusica

Dimitris' omega is how I've seen it carved in stone, so I don't think it's that modern.
@EasyGreekVideos

I notice the Ω is much more common in fonts and typefaces even today. But I have no idea when people started writing it like this. Reading later Koine Greek texts I see they even used a kind of uppercase ω instead of Ω.
@AndreaLocati

Do you usually join omicron and ypsilon ου in hand writing? Or does joining them make the omicron look like a sigma?

You don't usually join them, or if you do, the ο and the υ touch enough that the ο doesn't look like a sigma.

Thank you very much! 😃👍☺️ I've been looking for a nice video showing Greek calligraphy, but they always show only the "school" way, which may seem pretty, but I think it's so impractical... it seems too slow for me, you couldn't take notes writing that way. Also, your personal style looks fine to me. I'm Spanish and started to learn Greek a few months ago, and yet I'm able to read what you wrote in the video easily. I've been wondering if there is a cursive style in Greek similar to that used with the Latin alphabet, with ligatures and without lifting the pen, because it enables a faster and smoother writing, so I liked a lot the moments where you said you don't like to lift the pen to write a single letter, but still there is no connection between letters. Is there any style which uses such connections? Again, thanks a lot for this video, I really enjoyed it. Nice job! Bye!

There is Greek cursive. I remember in our Greek language books in elementary school at the end of each lesson, there was a small text in cursive that we had to copy. I'm not sure what was the point of this exercise really, my handwriting is still shitty. You can see the Greek alphabet in cursive here: i.pinimg.com/originals/dd/fd/3f/ddfd3fb02cc6f7a8cd619f125605aec8.gif ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Dl4H2C5uwKE.html I recommend checking out more videos from that channel.

We don't use cursive that much in Greece. In fact, most of us write the letters seperately and I hardly ever see someone writting our letters linked all in one in each word. It's something out of our culture.

@Evan490BC
@Evan490BC 3 месяца назад
@@hellskitchenlover (Standard) Greek is *very* easy to pronounce and write: you put a stress mark (in multi-syllable words) to the place of stress in the word (if it's a single-syllable word you don't need it and therefore you *shouldn't* use it). Now, the difficulty arises from the fact that choosing the correct vowel is context-dependent, as it is a consequence of the way Ancient Greek was pronounced. So you have to learn to spell each word individually, I'm afraid; there's no way around it.
