Tokyo Ghoul is a massively popular series to watch from Sui Ishida, following Ken Kaneki as he's forced into an order-less, dark world of mania and monsters. There's no redo's here. The anime analyses many ideas, from what it means to be human, to individual will, and even love. Despite the factions like the CCG, Aogiri Tree, and Anteiku trying to chainsaw the others, Tokyo Ghoul discusses what love is, coded into the characters Touka, Nishiki, Kaneki, and Rize. Each brings a different look at the theme, complete with its own layers of development that we'll watch today...
Although the anime follows Ken Kaneki for the most part, it's an interesting discussion given he has little impact on the plot in season one, doing much more in Root A, and the :re seasons. The other characters, like Nishiki or Touka are much more direct and impactful, and there's some like Rize or Yamori who kick of the action. This is one of the qualities that deepens the exploration of love in this series. Is it more passive and individual, requiring sacrifice, or is it about weakness and acceptance on both sides? Or... none of these things? Let's find out exactly what it says right now...

Honestly Tokyo Ghoul shows all the facets of love through so many different eyes. From a romantic stand point to a twisted one. All the characters are tied together by that one concept, love. Rise's love is self serving because she loves herself and thus treats herself in her pension for actively feeding and doing so either in excess or on what she loves. Basically it's like having your favorite food and instead of putting it away for later, she outright eats it and saviors the experience then goes out for more. Touka's love is very maternal in that she cherishes all those around her and makes sure they are ok, which translates into doing what is necessary for them at times. Like with the moment she met Kaneki and forced him to eat human flesh by shoving it down his throat and beating it down so that he could eat. She did this for two reasons, the first is self serving as she didn't want Kaneki's destructive version of love to cause problems for her and her friends and family down the line and also a act of tough maternal love towards Kaneki himself. The love with Nishiki is one I never truly looked at until I read the manga after the second season, but I could definitely see it now as it mirrors the love the old man and owner of Anteku had. They both fell for a human who showed them kindness and acceptance but unlike Nishiki, the old man went further and had a child with his partner. But Nishiki, due to his own experience where his sister was betrayed by the person she loved, seeks to close off all avenues for such a thing to happen to him by keeping all at a arms length and building a wall around himself and others. Thus why he forced himself to control his hunger around his girlfriend, by making sure never to reveal too much of himself to her while trying to reap all the benefits of their relationship. In terms of Amon and Mato, they both have lost something to ghouls and that was their ability to love. Amon lost his when he realized that his caretaker at the orphanage he was at was a ghoul and kept him alive as a form of love, which later on was explored in later chapters of the series. For Mato, his love is one born from his need and inability to protect someone dear to him. In the first Ghoul hunt for the One-eyed Owl, Mato lost his wife, to the Owl and felt that his inability to protect her was what caused her to die. And thus, we can look and compare his hunting of ghouls to be more like Touka's after he killed Haruka's parents. It's just a violent form of grieving for him, lashing out at the same creatures that took his wife from him. It is also this inability that fuelled his collection of Quinque cases and his need to protect both his partner and his daughter by trying to ensure that no harm could ever befall her like it did her mother, his wife. So when Touka removed his glove and saw his wedding ring it took her by surprise as she now saw that she was just like him in that they both had things they wanted to protect and that they loved. Now Ken Kaneki's love is truly self sacrificing in that he never truly does anything for his own benefits, rather for others, and it's embodied in a scene from the second season where Took a asked Hide about Kaneki and he tells her about the time he entered into a play. For Kaneki the act of loving us the act of giving his all for that love, like a role in a play, he is but an actor, but not just any actor a method actor, he throws himself fully into his role sometimes sacrificing himself for it so that the production can succeed and that shows itself in his inability to do anything of his own volition. When Jason gave him a choice to save one of the Two people who were trying to help him his love forced him not to act. As to choose one to live while the other died is not apart of his love, especially when he can't take either's place. So unable to choose both died because of the bonds of his own love. For more comparisons to other characters I love, his love is the idealistic vision of Shirou Emiya and the encompassing love of Nero from the Fate franchise. In the same way Shirou loves the ideal of becoming a hero of justice and saving everyone before him, Kaneki's love is that same beautifully naive affection, and as with Nero's love towards her people, it is smothering and can breed resentment as it holds no true logic. These two things fused to get her form Kaneki's sacrificial love for the world that didn't ask for it nor wants it. And that's my two cents and a nickel on the subject. It's been a while since I watched one of your videos but i know that it won't be read by anyone so heck, I'm not expecting much.

I second this - this was freaking fantastic. I listened to this as I went about my day and it really emphasized why I loved Tokyo Ghoul so much and how love is in our own lives

I'm so happy that you analysed this series once more. It's legit one of my all time favourites. I love how it explores the dynamic of between the human society and the ghouls. How, there is no real good or bad side. All the seemingly horrible decisions are done only because society has forced them to do it, which results in more and more until a cycle of death begets death begets death is formed. In such a society, acceptance has an immeasurable value. When you are hated for just existing, acceptance can be life changing. I love how none of the characters in Tokyo Ghoul are one dimensional. All of them are driven by a whirlpool of emotions, be it protection for someone they love, for vengeance, in acceptance of tragedy etc. I especially adore the Hinami arc even though it was emotionally depressing for me. She just wants to live, she didn't ask to be a ghoul, she can feel emotions and she can feel loss. In a moment, you feel hatred towards humans, the irony being that you are a human yourself. I loved your video and I have a suggestion for you. Check out Rascal does not dream of bunny girl senpai if you haven't already. The name is very misleading and it tackles some very dark themes. It could make for a very insightful video:)

I think about what Rize said about his moms kindness actually being for the worst at times, a lot. Like, (and to clarify my folks are great) my mom can let my littlest brother get away with things too much. My dad calls her out on that saying that's her basically being too weak giving in and how that's bad parenting. It's kind of messed my definition of kindness and parenting up at times.

That's why I come back to this scene so much. Ken does so little through the whole anime to actually change things because of that mindset, and it reaches its ugly conclusion here. Kindness is obviously great, but like anything else there's situation where it isn't the right call. I love when stories create examples for these less explored truths

>Love is temporary No. Love is the effort you expend over time in an effort to create an easier and more comfortable life for the person you love AND yourself. Love isn’t transient or temporary, the initial dopamine rush of the honeymoon stage is. Love isn’t easy, lust is. We, as a culture, have long forgotten how to delay our gratification and as a result how to prolong the enjoyment of the relationships we develop through our lives. To most women, love is just another “thing”; to most men love is our yellow brick road.

That's exactly what I hate about it, I think an unhappy end would be more fitting for the story. But, I'm happy that people can like it as it is, that's the important part at the end of the day

How did ghouls come to be in the first place, they were humans, yes the manga explained how humans became ghouls but the cause was a ghoul in the first place, so that really didn't answer much
@ProfessorViral
@ProfessorViral 3 года назад
I think it's better for the series to not give a definitive answer there. That would make the situation less relatable and more specific, which would hurt thematically
@kingoftheclouds8602

I am pretty sure the manga never explicitly said that ghouls originated from humans, that just showed that humans could be turned into ghouls which isn't anything new

It's hard to see the exploration of love when it's done through characters who flip flop between relatable & edgy cannibal psychos. Berserk & Beastars explore the same with same level of blood & gore in a better way. Lol, in Beastars even Legoshi & Rouis have nearly the same dynamic as Kaneki & Touka in Season 1 of Tokyo Ghoul complete with a consensual devouring scene at the end of Beastars season 2.
@ProfessorViral

To be fair, I would cover Beastars to explore the depth that series does have, but a vote a while ago showed most of the subscribers weren't interested in it, which is sad because I did like it
