I knew a man who was part of the Chosin Reservoir operations. He was a prominent boyscout leader and an extremely nice guy. Dude *HATED* tootsie rolls, even before his military service. But he admitted they tasted pretty damn good when they were the only thing to really eat and "stay mobile" at the same time. I now know why he said "stay mobile" now. He kept them assisting in vehicle repair a secret.

I remember learning this story whilst visiting the US Marine Corps. I found really interesting and did some research on it.

Ah yes. My grandparents remember these candies. When American troops pass by a town, children were following them and said "Give me chocolate (or candies, hams, etc.)" And what my grandparents got is Tootsie Rolls. They said thanks to all those foreign soldiers while writing this comment. Thank you, veterans around the world.

Our neighbor who passed away a few years back was a WW2 combat veteran. Every time he would see me and my family he'd walk up and say "hello strangers" and would reach in his pocket and say "here have some strength" , and would hand us tootsie rolls. Every time 😆. A lot of us, including myself, would be enraged if we were in such a situation. But these men were so determined to win in battle that they made use of any resource they could find. They looked for positivity in such a daunting situation, and were creative and innovative. A lesson for me and many of us to take home.
