My grandpa actually used to tell me this story about the tootsie rolls, he was apart of the chosin reservoir, they had to thaw them under their armpits, many of them were dying of frostbite in their dugouts, tootsie rolls were the only thing they had to eat for a time since the were sent those instead of rations - years later he would attend reunions every year for those from the chosin few and he had a north star pin based off of the north star they followed for navigation and there was a version of this star pin with a tootsie roll on it - one of my favorite pins in my collection since it reminds me of him ♡ So interesting to hear stories about it

That's also where the term for getting pregnant came from. The "Knocker-up" would wake up the man, he'd go to work, then when he was done with his knock-up rounds he'd stop by a have a little fun with the wifes, since he knew which ones were alone at home. Hense the term "She got knocked-up."

I actually found this quite interesting and that’s a surprise because I don’t normally find worldwide history entertaining

Knocker uppers in this video reminds me of something we have had in Egypt traditionally, a job called Mesaharaty (المسحراتي). Al Mesaharaty duty is to wake people up before sun rise to eat their pre-fasting meal (sohor سحور) in Ramadan since the times when clocks didn't even exist. He used a small drum on which he would tap a specific rhythm and sang to wake people up. I don't know if the rhythm which they sang was the same throughout history, but it have always been known to us as this song: "2es'ha ya naym wahed al daym, Ramadan karim (اصحى يا نايم وحد الدايم، رمضان كريم)". Which translates to "wake up who ever is sleeping, worship the immortal God, Ramadan is a generous month". It might be a bad translation but I tried my best 😅. We don't need mesaharaty now because of alarm clocks and smartphones, but the tradition is still going in many places across Egypt and kids wait for them to hear their names called by their local mesaharaty. The word mesaharaty came from the word sohor, which is the name of the pre-fasting meal we have before the sun rises to prepare for fasting. Mesaharaty roughly translates to "the man whose work is caring for people's sohor", similar to other words like meghanawaty مغنواتي (singer) from oghnya اغنية (song). I also have always wondered how mesaharaty would wake people up at that time and never missed, maybe they did the same as the knocker uppers!
