How tornadoes that ripped through 6 states became so deadly

One thing my mother always told me was you never run from a tornado.. even if it’s going 15 mph it’s still never a smart idea to out run a force that can throw an 18 wheeler 500yds down a corn field like it’s a piece of cardboard.. they can switch direction, disappear and reappear right in front of you, they can be shrouded in rain etc.. it’s just not a smart idea.. my mom grew up in Omaha/Des Moines Iowa and Nebraska she went through an f4 tornado at the age of 6 and survived with only the interior frame of a basement closet remaining after she was pulled out of the rubble by First responders.. 1976 Omaha tornado it was the costliest American disaster in terms of property damage until hurricane Katrina in 2005..

Horrible. I’m so grateful my family was able to get home when we did. 9 miles away from the Amazon building we got home right as the tornado hit them there .. so scary. Praying for the families that lost someone in this horrible night.

Just timing . This was the worst case scenario as far as tornadoes go , late at night during the winter.

This is so tragic and especially in the Christmas season. There will be many lonely and sad folks on Christmas Day this year..We are not suppose to get storms that bad in December. Something IS definatly wrong with our home planet.

This shiz was legit. Horrible. Sorry to any who were involved. I live right over the mountain from part of Kentucky that was hit. We got bad bad rain & crazy wind but I'm truly sorry for those directly hit. God bless everyone affected.

I cannot help but wonder if appropriate alert warnings were issued by the management of the company. Where I worked, we had impromptu fire alarm warnings and everybody gathered at the stairs to walk down to the main floor. So, in this case if management was given a Tornado Warning prior to the event, why wasn't necessary action taken? If no system was set up prior to the storm outbreak, then management should be reprimanded for compromising safety. It would be very disturbing to find out the company valued product over people.

I'm lucky to have grown up in Tornado Alley in a small town that got the outer fringes of tornado-producing supercells several times a year as I was growing up. (Tuttle, OK in the 1970s) I currently live in a mobile home in a trailer park in Nashville, TN. I fell asleep sitting up in my chair the night before, and woke up to the tornado warnings at about 3:30 AM. There was, among the storm-watch on TV, an inclination to run out, jump in my van and flee my location on the freeway. But where I was in Nashville was basically strattled by twin "rotations detected on the radar" to the North and South of me. Had I gotten on the interstate to flee the area, I would have likely driven right into one or the other of those twisters, cyclones or vortexes. With my background, I was able to interpret the news on TV to realize correctly that as scary as the storm was outside, I was actually safest staying put where I was.

Those who do not believe in climate change, God bless you. The natural disasters are getting bigger and bigger in scale. I live in South East Asia. When I was a teenager I rode bicycle to school daily and didn't get any sunburn. Now during hot days I can't even stand 15 minutes outside under the scorching sun. And the storm during the monsoon season is super scary too.
