Only $5 for 10 PCBs and every new member get $5 bonus. + Express 24 hour / 48 hour service on www.pcbway.com/ ➠ ➠ ➠ FM is the most important band for me on these tube radios - the sound is absolutely awesome - so a good IF alignment is essential. There are many ways to do this, and in this video I will attempt to show you a few of the methods that I normally use.
Enjoy the video.

Good tutorial on FM alignment Manuel and some nice and simple methods demonstrated to do it. (You missed the bit when a slug is stuck and the top of it cracks and you pull the module apart and damage the insides and it all ends in tears) Great video 😊

Very good instruction, Manuel. I struggled with an FM car radio some days ago with the AM suppression along other problems. Part of the problem was "melted" polystyrene caps in the IF, believe they were affected by switch cleaner. Two of them were shorted, strange fault

As you said, it's not complicated. But a guy name J.L. uses an SDR to align radio's, and he gets really lost and DOESN'T get it aligned correctly. Maybe he will watch this and "re-start" his brain! Excellent, Manuel! 👍

I guess the negative voltage level and then AM rejection is probably the easiest way to do it and as you've demonstrated using a sweep generator and looking at the shape of the response curve can be a bit time consuming for not much if any advantage in many cases. It's nice to play around though and see the different methods.

Yes, for me it’s about experimenting various options, and trying to decide which is most suitable for the particular situation

I think that the primary and secondary circuits of the bandpass filters in the IF amplifier are too weakly coupled (coupling coefficient lower than the critical one) and therefore it is impossible to obtain a transfer curve with two 'humps'. Greetings from Poland Manuel :)

I got a little confused when you were peaking the IF coils by maximising the speaker output while frequency modulating the signal generator's 10.7 MHz output. I guess that could only work as shown if the IF coupling at the ECC85 is such that the induced signal is only just above the noise floor (c.f. your 2V) as with stronger signals I'd have expected a well aligned ratio detector to provide an audio output proportional only to the frequency deviation, not the signal strength. But maybe I'm missing something? It wouldn't be the first time. 🤣
@electronicsoldandnew
@electronicsoldandnew Месяц назад
I always do the alignment at fairly low levels. If you go higher, the limiting characteristic should kick I. And make no difference to the audio output amplitude (unless, as you mentioned, you increase the deviation of the modulation).
@werner.x
@werner.x Месяц назад
I did understand it in the way, that FM modulation is at it's peak at 10.7Mhz, if you set the sweep oscillator the way he did. So, the output should peak at 10,7 as well. Or did i misunderstand something?
@electronicsoldandnew
@electronicsoldandnew Месяц назад
No, it doesn’t peak at 10.7, but rather deviates from 10.7 with the modulation. The power of the signal should be the same whether it’s at 10.7MHz or at 10.65MHz as a result of signal deviated by 50kHz below the center. The peak in the response is a characteristic of the filter alignment only, which should theoretically be flat at the top between 10.625MHz and 10.775MHz to allow for the regulatory maximum of 75kHz deviation.
