People often minimize or rationalize the most devasting experiences of their lives. Through personal and professional stories, Stephanie K. Starks, LISW-S, will teach you how to recognize if you’ve experienced trauma and how to find the help that you need if you have. Stephanie K. Starks, LISW-S is an independently licensed therapist and owner of Starks Counseling and Consultation Services, LLC, where her area of specialty is trauma. Ms. Starks has built her career counseling and advocating for children, families, couples, and groups in the greater Columbus community for close to 20 years. She facilitates workshops and trainings for schools, churches, companies and non-profit agencies on the topics of: mental health; trauma; grief; resiliency; and more. She facilitates a monthly support group called, Mothers in Healing, for mothers who have lost children to gun violence. Ms. Starks is a proud graduate of The Ohio State University, where she earned her Master of Social Work. She is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, Ohio Chapter, where she holds the office of Region 5 Director for the Central Ohio area. I'm trying therapy right now. My sister was in and out of jail and prison a lot due to addiction, but my parents wouldn't let me visit her in there as a kid. She passed away from an overdose, but before that my brother had committed suicide shortly followed by my dad dying from lymphoma. Just last year my mom died from lung cancer, which meant that I was the last one standing not long before I turned 32. I'm also trans and am still learning to accept my differences, because my brain couldn't handle working through dysphoria amidst all of this until pretty recently. I've been in transition since 2010

I'm a friend of your sister. I was incarcerated, but not with her. I'm also a Mental Health Therapist. Incarceration really affects both the family and the incarcerated person's mental health. We, as a country, need to do better. This was very powerful. Thank you!
