Iconic songs. They can tell us a lot about a song, but some of us can tell us about the place they came from. Today, I theorize how U.N. Owen Was Her can represent the entire Touhou project using my amateur analysis skills.

You know, I've been thinking about that. I do feel that the song is less of a genre and more of a thing in every genre. What I do think is a genre is Megalovania because of all the remixes in the style of it.

@@gabrieldossantossanta5656 UN Owen Was Her could have more covers. But that's not what a genre is. A genre is a style of music. MEGALOVANIA is a genre not because there are more versions of it but because there are many songs that use Megalovania as an "instrument.' This isn't the case for UN Owen

On a serious note I believe bad apple deserves this place more than un owen. I have only recently discovered ronald mc donald and it was never popular in my country but it might have something to do with cultural differences.

@@Hacete Sorry Cirno :( So for Bad Apple - there's two main arguments I have. 1) I have I think it's definitely more representative of the outside Touhou part, but the inside, not so much. My main issue is that it's not really connected to a character (it's Elly's stage theme, not even her boss theme), and thus it doesn't really show up that much outside of things referencing the shadow art PV. UN Owen connection to Flandre means it is more representative of all the other songs, which are connected to characters. 2) Bad Apple is kind of a unique Touhou song in my opinion. Its situation just doesn't feel like it reflects Touhou in general, other than the whole woah-that's-from-Touhou thing (and also the parodies). The "Can it run Bad Apple" and the whole development of the Christina Vee english version, for example, make it quite different from most if not all Touhou songs so it isn't as representative. As for Cirno, definitely better representative of the epic memes. But not so representative of the outside of the fandom? I just don't think the whole outside influence thing can be seen as much, although she does get out a lot. UN Owen might be beat out by some songs in certain categories, but I feel that it is the biggest song that covers all of the categories.

@@Hacete I agree that bad Apple is more popular than any Touhou song, but when people say "original version" Bad Apple, 99.9% of the times they mean that one remix, not the LLS version. It's still originated from Touhou, but its link is weaker than UNOwen (not to mention it links to the PC-98 era, which is unknown to even half of the fanbase)

It represents Touhou pretty well, since it is the theme song of a character who shows up for one game and has almost no relevance afterwards. It represents how most Touhou fans don’t know anything about the series besides a couple of songs and characters.

Well, most Touhou fans probably don't even realize that they're Touhou fans because they don't figure out that the stuff they're listening to is Touhou. I would say that once they become Touhou _fans_ (as in they're actively a fan of it rather than just aware) they end up knowing more than just a "couple". Though it really depends on how you define "couple". And...I also don't entirely see the connection with UN Owen? Are you saying most people are attached to characters with barely any canon relevance? Because the rest of the EoSD crew is a lot more relevant - Flandre (and Rumia) are the exceptions.

@@DeltaPie It represents how most fans only care about the most surface level qualities of Touhou i.e. Flandre being your favorite character because you think she looks cute and has a fancy theme. Many fans also think of her as an innocent cutie or a deranged psychopath, despite her barely showing either of those traits in the game proper.

@@waluigiisthebest2802 Mmm. Alright, I think I can see what you mean if you're referring to people accepting inaccurate character interpretations. Though I will say that I don't feel like its as bad of a situation anymore - I think, over time, people have become more knowledgeable. It seems that nowadays there's more people complaining about misguided fans than there are misguided fans (though there aren't any numbers so I could be wrong). However, I would argue that this isn't entirely what "surface level" means. If you're "surface level" then its more likely that you'll believe in "wrong" character interpretations, but I feel like they're separate concepts (surface level meaning, in my opinion, being only aware of the more popular characters, like EoSD). I suppose that Flandre can represent the less obsessed fans (or, if you'd like "surface level" fans) but I don't think they're necessarily as bad as people think they are.

@@DeltaPie IMO, surface level fans are fans that only care about the most basic qualities of a work i.e. character designs and music. Not to say those things don’t matter, but things like gameplay, story and character personalities are also important, even if these people don’t really care. They may like character personalities, but only get their information from popular memes, because they can’t be bothered to look deeper than the surface level of the official works. I feel like Flandre ironically represents Touhou fans, who are mostly surface level fans (or at least were), because the only reason she is quite as popular as she is is because she is cute, has a cool theme, and people made up personalities for her.

@@waluigiisthebest2802 I see. Makes sense. The thing is that nobody has really figured out what exactly is "Touhou", which means that there's different ideas of surface level. You could say that "Touhou" is just the games (the official stuff), but I personally feel that that is too narrow. For example, considering how big the music scene is, I would be willing to consider the fan music as part of "Touhou." As a result, my definition of surface level would be people who are only aware of the bigger songs (as in the three big ones) and characters (EoSD crew). And I suppose Flandre fits that quite well, though I still wouldn't say that this applies to enough people to represent Touhou entirely (vs. just a certain group). So we all have our different definitions, which does show the uniqueness of Touhou because not many fandoms have this sort of question.

Okay, so there are two main ways this could be argued. The cheap way is "that doesn't include Flowering Nights" so I will ignore half of the Sakuya-related stuff. Considering that I was willing to take into account both versions of the original and the COOL&CREATE Remix, it would be fair to include both here. Now, for Night of Nights - it's honestly pretty similar to UN Owen in terms of categories covered, I just feel that it just isn't as big. Out of the Bad Apple-UN Owen Was Her-Night of Nights trinity, I've always had the feeling that Night of Nights was the less popular of the three. Then again, its still really close. I think Flandre does inch forward a bit because of a greater amount of arrangements of her original song.

@@funny-gv3ml Yeah, I know. UN Owen's views are more spread out over multiple videos though. I do think UN Owen Was Her is a more frequently arranged theme than Flowering Nights still. And I suppose it has a greater variety in "hit remixes." For example, you have Sweets Time and Who Killed UN Owen as significant variations, with Sweets Time having its own remixes as well (similarly to Last Brutal Sister Flandre Scarlet). Flowering Nights, however, just has Night of Nights as far as I could tell.
