Bearpaw has a unique model of similar boot where whole merino wool is a liner with a removable insole. I do not think Bearpaw uses Sheepskin for outer leather in order to have a more durable boot. During peak fashion for Bearpaw boots, trend in my area I would see people wearing them without any liners and let foot slide around in shoe.
I'm from the town in Australia where UGGs originally made. It's sad about the owner they sent him broke. I think stole the name without asking and knew to patent it. Patent laws are stupid.
I grew up in Sydney in the 70s. We just called them all uggboots. We knew there were many manufacturers, and you had to pick and choose to get good ones. Paddy’s market and town markets typically had poor quality ones from random sellers. I remember the best ones I tried were from a shoe store up near Manly. Beach suburbs and rural stores were the best places to buy quality uggboots. Also…. The sheepskin car seat covers in Australia were outstanding. Kept the seat warm in winter and cool in the summer heat. Game changer her in Aussie summers.
The Australian footwear industry has been decimated by cheap imports. When you have someone like the Deckers buy up other brands, cheapen them and then try and kill off the true heritage, it is surprising any ugg style boots are still made in Australia. Most of the manufacturers are cottage style, family companies living on a shoestring. They are not big corporates. Please support the genuine product and not the thief.
What heritage? Ugg didn't have heritage. It was cheap working boots. That's why it was a generic word to begin with. Deckers made the Ugg into a fashion item and a recognizable item around the world. Outside of Australia, Deckers Uggs are what people think of when they hear the word, Ugg. Celebrities didn't wear Australian Ugg, and Australian Ugg wasn't what people wanted to buy.
Really boils my piss when people trademark generic things in order to make a quick buck by basically sueing people left and right. It's creatively, morally, and ethically bankrupt. I'm looking at you, The Smiley Company. 🙃
The word for "Full" you were looking for was probably " Loft". The Australian boots are merino wool which is a better material for warmth and softness than other types of sheep wool due to their smaller fibres.
Could be both, for sure. The loft, how springy the wool is, the density, obviously how many little sheep hairs per square inch there are @@UnknownUser-rb9pd
I looked as soon as some Ugg slippers in the UK. Not only were they made in China , they weren’t even sheepskin. They were suede lined with artificial fur fabric
All the Ugg brand products are crap. I’ve looked at a few in stores and never ever thought anything other than “this is cheap crap” might as well by Hey Dudes.
I’m surprised that that’s not what the US Uggs were. Totally expected inside generic eHDPE fluff and outer some other plastic alcantara-like, possibly including some cloth molded in.
Yeah. I think its like copyrighting the word Boots. Some genius has probably already copyrighted the use of letters to describe a product and is intimidating some company right now . My general problem with ugg style boots ..is there is no soft insole ( at least in the pairs I've seen.) it's like walking on boards. Thanks for covering this subject. I did some research before I bought my Australian slippers.... and was more confused in the end.
I had Uggs from Northside Souvenirs in Adelaide in the 1970's - we just wore them as slippers then. They're still making them on site and they're still good quality.
F**k Decker Corp. and their corporate greed! As an Aussie who has been wearing Uggs in winter for close to 50 years, I go out of my way to avoid any company that they are involved with.
Am I the only one that will stop buying a brand if a celeb starts promoting it. It can depend how promoted they make it but if a celebs gets their hands on it and promotes it I do not want it.
Sports stars no for more normal in game stuff/training, but for out of game casual stuff no. Unless I was wearing/liking item before those people started using them. Also, USA UGG has gone down in quality since moving manufacture to China from Australia in early 2000's.
A removable insole on shoes like this is a huge deal. They'll all eventually shed because of the pressure of standing on them so better to replace one thing than the whole boot
Bearpaw clothing and shoes has a model of similar boot where inside is all merino wool replaceable/removable. Of course, when they were at peak fashion the trend was at peak for model to remove all fur and ride open inside letting foot slide around.
Thanks for making this video, As an Aussie im proud that the Aussie made came out on top. I think you have under sold the removable innersole. I buy a new set of inners every couple of years and it makes the feel fresh and brand new again!
For some reason this episode resonates with me due to what's happening in the Mid-east now, just because you trade mark a name, it doesn't give you the rights of ownership (1948). very informative video as always, keep up the good work !
I have Ugg slippers, when they arrived they said made in China, I assumed they would be from Australia and never knew there was a US company, I couldn't return them and after looking closely, the shearing is not real, clearly man made that smells like plastic when burned, the glued in insole fell apart quickly and when I saw it's really thin on top of a really thin rubber bottom, I got the $30 Ugg premium insoles to replace and they too aren't real shearing and not at all $30 comfortable, All in all the US/China Uggs are overpriced garbage, When I have extra money I will be getting a real pair directly from Australia. Big corporations ruin everything good.
@@hotmess9640 It doesn't work like that because there will be variations in quality from one American manufacturer to another, same deal with all the different outfits in Australia. A good Australian boot is going to be better than a bad American one and vice vera.
I do have a pair of unbranded uggs that I wear during the PNW winters. It's interesting to see how many companies are making ugg boots and how they differ from each other! I had no idea how controversial this was! Great video!! Can't wait for the next one!🙂😁
I'm Australian and these ankle height boots aren't the Ugs I remember from the 70s. Ugs were near knee height with lacing on the sides and decorative reinforcement on the holes. These boots called Ugs these days are large slippers to me.
There's a company 30 minutes from where I live that makes shin high Uggs with laces up the side and a wool turnover on top for comfort and style. You order them custom in whatever colour configuration you want, as well as a bunch of other styles (like slippere and ankle height uggs). All hand made, all real leather and wool. Most comfortable shoes I've ever owned
If you want to buy a better sheepskin boot then buy the Australian version (Wild Wool) over the cheap mass produced made in China version. Deckers is only interested in dollars and will happily compromise quality whereas Wild Wool is interested in quality comfort.
UGG boots should counted as a protected Australia brand as it culture significance in Australia (Like maple syrup for Canada champagne for France, Scotch Whiskey for Scotland and the Australian Slouch Hat )
Makes me pine for the days Blunnies were made in Australia. Just better quality. Same must be true for real Uggs or Wild Wool as a local manufacturer. We do not need cheap knock-off brands anywhere. So many countries have top quality footwear makers. Lets support them!
Similarly In North America other boot styles called slippers by other brands got name stolen too by UGS even if some had name rights, I am referring to the boots with knit uppers or knit from ankle up UGG makes. Ugg has trademarked names or sued for said names even if other brands being sued had patent on name.
Man, I've had a concussion and keep forgetting about and burning my food. Factor has come in clutch, Been able to have good tasty food and I am not worried about a kitchen fire.
You should cut open some Rick Owen’s doc martens just to see if the colab raises the leather quality also to see the construction (specifically the mega lace pair)
I have Emu Australia UGG boots and so far they have been great and made about 10min from my house. But I still want to get myself a pair of Muggs one day, but are just so expensive.
I bought for my wife a pair of EMU Australia, they look good and there was an Australian made certificate inside the box. I was considering to buy the original UGG 1974 or Wild Wool or Aus Wooli but then i gave up when I saw the delivery costs from Australia to Europe. What is a good quality UGG brand available in Europe?
I am an American; they are always doing something slick; making the product cheaper and raising the price .And made in China. We all that China products is cheaply made.I will support Australian Uggs. I will pay for quality every time. I want my money's worth.
Most Australians are still really cheesed off about Decker’s heavy handed tactics. I’ll never buy their product, and no doubt the quality will drop through the floor and they’ll do themselves out of business in the end. Classic gross corporate tactics 🤮
I grew up in aus and im from the early 1980's kid and i always had aussie sheepskin uggboots had em all my kid and teen early adult life. My mum had been wearing them since way before i was born
I stopped buying USA made leather goods years ago. The reason being is that stuff made in Australia or south Africa are just made better. Again, American markets screwed everything up. Also American inflation just sucks.
I disagree with the premise that which ever version is higher quality can be considered "the true Uggs". We have seen many brands turn to crap so badly that "knock off" versions end up being better value or even straight up better build quality. At a certain point, appeals to authenticity are just marketing BS. Great video as always! Really loved the deep dive into the history
Back in 1983, all kids at my high school (actually a "Technical School") made UGG gloves as part of year 8 home economics class. Basically huge soft lambs leather mittens. Ugly as fuck but warm on a winters morning
Our local Ugg boot maker in Freo told me that all the skins go to China for tanning because there aren't any tanners left in Australia. my old Ugg's had the hair ripple and lanolin smell, now they feel more like synthetic as the tanning prosses takes everything out.
Me and the Misso are so addicted to this channel , who ever thought watching boots cut in half is fun , so love ya research in the history , so deep 👊✊ Everyone should be boycotting the China made slave labor ones , GREED!! At least here in Australia we keep jobs at home.
The original sheep shearing shoe would've been a moccasin style slipper (of course based off North American designs), still worn today by shearers, not uggs (although I guess those are also based off North American style shoes). My parents associate uggs with bogans though, so they stick with moccasins. I also wear moccasins around the house but I've got nothing against uggs, and if someone judges you for wearing uggs, that's on them. Also, support your local ugg makers! A lot of makers here are very small. I need a new pair, and I've found a local maker who still tans their own skins and hides, so I'm considering them. A lot of sheepskins aren't even tanned in Australia anymore, and I've heard stories of farmers essentially giving away skins to foreign companies to take them, because otherwise they'd have to pay money for them to be disposed off. Unfortunately a very rough state for sheep farmers, they skins used to be worth a lot a few decades ago, and for whatever reasons they aren't worth what they used to be.
@@I_WANT_MY_SLAW They weren't sure what the food poising.was from the first time. Then the second time they figured it out but had multiple meals left and didn't want them to go to waste. I would have stopped after the first time
Aussies and Kiwis love their wool slippers. In fact there is a version called a moccasin which is sold everywhere, especially in the countryside to this day. If you ask an Australian what a moccasin is, it is a cheap, sub ankle length woolen slipper with enormous toe box stitching usually with a turn down at the top giving a fluffy 'cuff'. The original ugg was pretty much exactly the same, and from the same time and thought process. To tell an American they can own the name moccasin is exactly how crazy this concept is to Australians. The Australian moccasin is not fashionable and generally worn by very low income earners so perhaps the reason we don't see corporations coming after them.
The UGG branded slippers and boots we see here in Australia are cheap garbage. They used to be sheep skin and amazing, super comfy. Now its just cheap nylon and rock hard cheap outsole.
IMO, true "Ugg's" are Australian made with Australian product... yet I'll still wear (on a rare occasion) the aftermarket Costco sheepskins I bought years ago.
my friend had UGGs in the 2000s. WE called hers Ch-uggs. Because they were made in china. Actually lasted quite well. More than the mainstream american UGGs.
I have some Chinese knockoffs (with gold coast titans logo) that I wear in the snow here. They’re starting to fall apart now, so I’m seriously thinking about buying a real pair when I go back to Australia in May.
It's amazing how the names and marketing can make or break a product. It's clear that Wild Wool has a better claim as the "original" and the USA Uggs are a knock-off. But, because of the name recognition, (at least in the USA,) it would be viewed as the other way around. It's like how Hydrox cookies were the original, but Oreo copied them and became the "name brand." I don't even know if Uggs are popular anymore, but I remember when it seemed like all the trendy girls were wearing them.
Some Aussie company should trademark "PNW" and "Pacific Northwest" and see how that goes over. Then use that to invalidate Decker's UGG brand. As far as the shoes, I think the sloping toe on the Wild Wool pair looks terrible. Not that I'd wear the other brand. Or any brand of these boots, for that matter. I prefer true moccasin slippers/camp shoes for when it gets cold.
As a cobbler, the US Uggs are TRASH. The materials used in the last 5 years has just crashed. And they’re sooooo expensive. Every other Australian company we’ve gotten in is loads better. Get any from Australia. You’ll thank me.
