David De Gea is the best shot stopper i have ever seen. My favorite United keeper ever and i have seen the greatest of the last 30 years. The saves David made put some of the greatest goals to shame. Unbelievable, awe inspiring saves.

Even last season, De Gea was class. Made 2/3 big errors, granted, but he made about 10 match winning saves. People became so used to him saving our bacon that they stopped noticing when it happened

De Gea is one of the most underrated-disrespected footballers that I can remember. He was an elite level goalkeeper, amongst the best. Maybe not Neuer/Courtois level, but he’s up there.

The treatment david de gea recieved in that last year was absolutely criminal! To offer the guy a contract and withdraw it and offer him drastically less money is ridiculous Arguably up there as the best goalkeeper united have ever had, as anyone does in a career they have there highs and lows but he has done more than enough for this club to have been able to treated with more respect than he gets and im 100% sure that if he was in the nets now united wouldnt be in as bad of a position as they are now especially in the champions league

As a United fan, I have to say even in the past few seasons, he’s always consistently been one of the best players in the team. He was actually very good last season, he made a few mistakes but I can recall a lot of highly rated goalkeepers also did last season but never got the scrutiny that he did. He didn’t got enough credit for it. People dismissed his golden glove but clean sheets are a collective and I can remember without his some of his saves we wouldn’t have got as much clean sheets as we did. It feels like he’s been scapegoated which is ridiculous since he’s a United legend and our all time clean sheets record holder

De Gea was never underrated. He was under appreciated by United fan base. He was at one point rated the best in the world and with winning the POY for 4 straight years at the club, that’s not under rated. United fans bought into the Pep Delusion, meaning they believe everything Pep does ,United have to do. So if Pep has a ball playing GK, then United need one. Give, the Czech,Courtois and De Gea’s and you can keep your Ederson, Allison and Onana’s.

No discussion about Peter Schmeichel? Still for me one of if not the best goalkeeper I've ever seen. As a 'keeper myself, much of what I try and do is modelled after him. And yeah, critical mistake by Erik Ten Hag and Manchester United to let De Gea walk, especially for someone like Onana. Onana is not Manchester United quality and for all the games that De Gea let United win or draw, Onana is losing. How much more time will Onana get!? If I were manager, I'm dropping Onana for the next game. The mistakes have to stop.

What is also amazing is the number of pundits (most of them who never even played in the park) who still won't admit that they were wrong in supporting De Gea getting the boot over the nightmare that is Andre Onana. It's all about ego. Some people just can't admit when they are wrong and have made a mistake.

How much of the criticism of De Gea comes from the average fan not really understanding the sort of stylistic nuance and "game" of different keepers and just not preferring his style, which is to the general fan less involved/exciting. Bc like Ben said, sure he doesn't really come collect crosses but he's not keeper who wants to do that, and I think fans who aren't really into keepers don't see that

If Ten Hag just did the sensible thing and let him stay for another year to help mentor and ease Onana into the role it would have been fine. He would have had time to build the "playing from back" team he clearly wants and Onana would have had less pressure since he came from a team that didn't really allow the opposition free shots in the box where as we all know United like to throw a tea party for the opposition in their box

United’s best player over the last 10 years

The problem is the club listening to fans who never go to games. There's millions more of them than the fans who actually see the players week in week out. Their voices bought us Onana, Sancho, Pogba, Sanchez, Anthony. It's their voices who forced out players like DDG and Fred. They tried to force out Harry Maguire and Scot McTominay. These fans haven't got a clue what's really needed to win a game let alone a league. Players like Harry and Scott are the embodiment of the club at heart. Pride, passion, effort, blood sweat and tears. DDG had his faults but shot stopping wasn't one of them. Every keeper makes the odd mistake but DDG made far more saves than he let in, a lot of them saves he had no right to make but got there somehow. He was too quiet though, didn't command his area and just relied on his abilities. Had he been a bit more vocal and been made to join in with passing drills during or after training, I'm sure he could have been a much better keeper than we have now. Onana makes the defence nervous. He makes easy saves look difficult.... if he saves them at all. He doesn't spread himself to stop shots. It's his hands or nothing. Even then he keeps them tucked in and looks like he has trex arms. He may improve his form but a massive howler is always around the corner. If 1 goes in, you know there's at least another 2 coming. Besides maybe Courtois, there is no better shot stopper in the world than DDG. Getting rid of him was as crazy as letting Stam go when we did.

I guess it's more about coaches wanting a keeper to play from the back when in reality a keeper should be good with their hands. Their primary goal is to stop a goal with their hand. Would rather have a good shot stopper like De Gea than a good keeper playing from the back but fumbles at every shot he faces like Onana

Bruce Grobelaar can do all. In fact, he caught crosses around 18 yard line .. let alone 6. Back in the 1980s and before, cutting out crossed was key tasks of all goalkeepers. Onana isn't worried about the pressure, he was in a CL final last year and has enough confidence to move out from goal, that takes a lot of confidence and balls to risk going out from goal and play from the back. He is simply nowhere near as good of a goalkeeper as De gea. De Gea is one of the best shot-stoppers the world has ever seen from a goalkeeping perspective. He is for sure 100% overall the best keeper united has had. Man U had one of the best goalkeeepers in the world still in his prime and let him go. The thing that makes De Gea even more underated in peoples eyes is this. He had these kind of stats as a goalie while for the better half of time in Man UTD he played with a joke of a defense and i mean a joke of a defense. People remember how in Maguire's first season at Man UTD he was an absolute wall for example but people will forget that at the time Maguire funnily enough was the only competent defender they had and that sums United's defense for the past 7-8 years , some individual good players but over all a very flawed defense , De Gea singlehandendly kept United at the top 5 of the Prem by pure shotstopping while also being incredibly consistent even in his bad years. 17 mistakes in 400+ matches over the span of checks notes , 10 years.

I’ll tell what happened with de gea these last few seasons, burnout, they needed Onana or someone to be a solid back up. David was our guy and I’m still gutted with how they treated him and I literally celebrated the first few united losses this year!

Cech was best premier league goalkeeper. It seem like people have really forgot how good he was. Most clean sheets ever. Least amount goals conceded in a season. Won 4 premier leagues, 5 FA cups, 3 league cups a Europa league and champions league saving penalties in the final and had a career threatening head injury. Thee number 1

Yes, he's not as bad as people/media make him out to be. But he's amateur level with his feet and in the end his whoopsies(with hands as well) got quite common. I think he just unfortunate here. At his worse, he got us a Carabao Cup, Champions League and Top 4. I turned on Ten Hag during the post season when Ten Hag gave him a contract he signed it and United decided not to sign it. That is not how you treat a legend and servant for the club. At the end of the season, I knew we had problems but De Gea was not our number problem. This idiot manager blamed him for losing the FA Cup. Thats when I was Ten Hag out.
