The battle of Walt Disney World vs Universal Studios Orlando is the closest it has ever been in recorded history. Universal Orlando Resort has made up a ton of ground over the last decade thanks to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Whereas, over the same period of time, the Disney Parks have remained rather stagnant in their attendance growth, despite building many new lands including Star Wars Galaxy's Edge. Bottom line is Universal Orlando 2022 is much closer to overtaking Walt Disney World 2022 than I had even originally anticipated. Plus, with Universal's Epic Universe on the way, this competition of Universal Orlando vs Walt Disney World is about to get a whole lot closer. The war of the Orlando theme parks is a complicated and complex one. However, I believe in this video I have been able to lay out a fairly straight-forward game plan for how Universal Studios Orlando 2022 can come out on top in the battle of Disney vs Universal Orlando. I also quickly lay out a plan for how Walt Disney World 2022 can hold off the menace that is Universal Studios 2022.

Honestly, as someone who prefers Disney over Universal, I HOPE Universal takes over and becomes the Industry leader. Disney needs to be knocked down a peg and put in their place. They need to remember what made their parks successful- quality and innovative attractions, incredible and immersive theming, and accessibility. Disney right now has done nothing but pump out cheap and low quality rethemes and cloned attractions, and increase prices to try to limit the classes of people that can visit their parks. I can't tell you the last time Disney Parks did something exciting or innovative.

The worst part is that many Disney fans praise whatever mediocre new experience Disney gives them. The new restaurant space 220. Seems so incomplete and lackluster, the new Spider-Man ride is so cheap! And so much more. But many Disney fans are ok with spending more money on those mediocre experiences. And that’s why Disney doesn’t care about changing. Because people will still pay for cheap things.

@@dapperloser3025 There's a difference between those who make mistakes but learn from them, and those who rarely make a mistake but never learn. Eventually the former will catch up, and then the one who doesn't learn, is the one making the mistakes. We've seen this with other companies, my favorite example was Xbox vs. PlayStation. While still the top dog of the console market, the Sony PlayStation slaughtered a console generation being an absolute killer console in the PS4 era, Microsoft after their blunder that was the Xbox one (or just Phil Spencer), started listening to the consumer and realized that they have a shit ton of money and you might've learned of the Activision Blizzard acquisition, they got their game up and caught Sony off guard. While some of the variables are switched around such as Disney being the larger money giant and land owner, I think something like Universal taking over Disney in the theme park industry is a possibility, one that would probably take decades, but one that can happen

Epic Universe needs to have a strong start. Which brings up Nintendo Land, which could be the next Wizarding World in terms of popularity. But it’s my belief that they need the Donkey Kong Coaster at Park open to maximize the land. Despite how cool Mario Kart ride is, they need something with lots of speed that’s not screen based.

I believe a large component of why people continue to vacation at Disney, is because they see it as a more complete package as a resort destination. Whereas people right now are likely to spend a week on Disney property, going to all of the parks but also exploring the numerous other options like dining, boating, fishing and maybe even a water park or two, they likely don't perceive Universal as having an equivalent value because it's so much smaller. However, as Universal has continued to build more hotels, has introduced Volcano Bay and is now opening Epic Universe, I believe perceptions will begin to really change. Whereas before, Universal was seen as a one or two day side trip from a Disney stay, that may no longer be the case. With the third park, there's a strong chance that Universal parks will contain more attractions than Disney has in four. In addition to this, we already know Universal will be expanding their hotel offerings with at least one attached to the park, but the current property has room for quite a few more, as well as another version of shopping and dining like City Walk for more night time entertainment after the parks close. In addition, the close proximity, possibly even walking distance of I-Drive to this area of the resort will entice guests away from Disney and more towards this part of Orlando. If places like Icon Park can be seen as close enough that staying at a Universal hotel is within walking distance, it's another sell to stay on Universal property, furthering solidifying the loyalty of their audience. I imagine that once Epic is built, Volcano Bay will likely get a large expansion. It already outcompetes both of Disney's water parks, which are fine but stagnant. It simply needs more capacity, which Universal can deliver on, really stepping up the competition and allowing Universal to feel even larger and more encompassing than it currently does. Not only do I think Epic will be great, but it's going to do completely change public perception about the value of staying at Disney.

💯 agree with you. Universal sees it's opening and they're going for it. They have been chipping away at Disney since they moved to Orlando as the underdog. Universal is way ahead already in social media marketing and customer service and they listen to their guests more than Disney does. I don't know who Disney thinks they're targeting but they sure aren't listening to their guests. Universal does and they deliver. I can't wait for Epic Universe to open. Disney has pushed me away and I don't see anything that would bring me back. In fact they're making it clear they don't want me back. I guess multiple reasons why, they would have to find land whether in Orlando or Japan, how to make the park possible, etc. With them teaming up with Universal its easier to make that land possible and convenient because land: no issue with that you got Epic Universe opening, you have Universal planing it so they know how to run the park what to put in it, rides, etc; but doing a park just nintendo I think would've been hard to do especially if they didn't team up with Universal.

That would eliminate casual gamers from the park though, similar to an all Star Wars park would eliminate casual Star Wars fans. Better to offer a little of everything so your park appeals to everyone.

As someone who studied marketing and have worked in it for several years now, I have to say you’re wrong about the pricing thing. Universal would do well to stay away from Disney-style price hikes as it’s not doing anything good for Disney’s brand, and the internet has changed the notion that the consumer is too dumb to know if a product is good or not regardless of its price. On the contrary - we’re at a time in the world where the majority of people are looking for the best deal.

as someone whose family regularly visit disney world since 2015, i wholeheartedly agree with the overall guest experience at disney going down. being florida born and raised, we had annual passes to the slurry of parks from tampa to orlando. we started with universal first in 2013 and made the switch to disney in 2015. AT THE TIME we had felt that the experience was well worth the price even if the rides weren't as thrilling as universals. growing up with disney, I could see the quality of the experience tank as prices hike and the experience was low. I was someone who defended disney with my life because I valued that "disney magic" so much. obviously times have changed, we recently decided to not renew our passes indefinitely and potentially go back to universal. in our most recent disney trip, we felt very alienated as locals coming to visit. reservations makes it difficult to get into parks we want and the new genie plus was a whole mess. it's really sad to see something you loved so much go bad, but in recent times we've had better experiences at universal.

Definitely, that's why I kinda disagree when people say Universal is for teens and adults because there is definitely a lot for kids to do. I remember being 4-5 and doing rides like Spiderman, Popeye's and Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges, Jurassic Park River Adventure and Rip Saw Falls (which now thinking about it I'm kind of surprised I wasn't more scared when doing it). Also in Studios with Transformers, the Simpsons Ride and Men in Black Alien Attack. I bet kids now can also have fun on Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon (replaced Twister), Fast & Furious (which uses the same/similar ride system that Disaster/Earthquake used, which I also was able to ride and had no problem riding) and Skull Island Reign of Kong (which uses the same/similar ride system as Fast and Furious). The rides I mentioned above are the rides that don't appear when you put only kids on the Universal app, so that's a lot of rides. These are rides that probably appeal more to teens and adults but kids can still have fun on those rides and some might even be appealing to them.

Harry Potter in Universal is by far the best themed land in either parks and Disney's response looks like that, a response. Star Wars and Pandora, while having some great theming themselves, just doesn't carry the same immersive feel as Harry Potter in Universal. Not only that Universal is more bang for your buck as while Disney World offers a great experience it's incredibly expensive in so many ways Universal isn't not to mention Universal just feels a lot less stressful.

I GREATLY DISAGREE WITH RAISING THE PRICES ON UNIVERSAL TICKETS. I've never been to Disney. I can't afford it. I don't think anyone thinks Universal is a worse park because it's cheaper. It's not like it's Six Flags level cheap. I look at Disney and go "I'm not paying that I can go to Universal for half the price and probably have more fun" I've NEVER had a bad time there. The staff is ALWAYS so nice and accommodating. (Obviously there's a few grumpy rouges but it's rare at least the times I've gone) The rides are fun. The hotels are fun. City Walk is great. Universal is affordable. HHN is a blast. I'm trying to make it an effort to visit Universal at least every two years if I can afford it. I think the one thing Universal needs to do to beat Disney is have more kids things, revamp the kids zone and I think with Epic Universe and all the IPs they'll have will cover it. Universal is too adult and people want family friendly. As much as I don't want more kids in the park. I love that it's more an adult land. That's what they need Either way... I can't wait to see how Universal progresses.

Lets be clear about one thing, Disney raised prices to make more money, they didn't do squat about overcrowding. If they really cared about overcrowding they could simply lower the park capacity by a bunch. That said, I'm glad my last trip to Disney World was back when staying on site offered a decent benefit, magical mornings (and evenings) were substantial, they didn't charge you to park your vehicle if you were staying on site, hell they still offered complementary bus service as a big thank you for staying on their property for letting them know "Hey I'm going to spend all my vacation dollars here". Oh yeah, and when off season actually meant the crowds were super chill. Man those were the days.

They have to maintain quality to keep people coming because they dont have the same brand loyalty. honestly I think Universals success is a lot to do with luck in gaining the rights to Harry Potter and how they handled it. Universal isn’t THAT landlocked. There is plenty of space currently in the parks that they could use like The Lost Continent, the area between Marvel Island and Toon Lagoon, and Woody Woodpecker. They’re always starting some construction at Fear Factor Live. There is plenty of room for expansions and immersive new lands. In addition, they’re moving offices and such to north of Epic Universe. That will create some room between Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley. The Epic Universe land is almost as big as the current property so they’re almost doubling the land.

I have an insane idea, but if done well, it could work: Universal Studios should make a videogame in the same vein as Disneyland Adventures, but without the Kinect feature. It can basically be the ultimate version of the park, where both rides, lands, and experiences old and new (not counting lands that were conceptualized but then put on the chopping block), can all be featured, and while not exactly being a direct copy of Disneyland Adventures, it can draw very heavily from it, with characters, quests, a quirky little companion to help us with such things as getting used to the controls and reminding us what we have to do, attractions that do MUCH more than take us through the attractions as they are in the parks, you know, the whole shebang. Well, maybe being a knockoff of Disneyland Adventures but improved COULD be a good thing if they still maintain their originality. Here are some general properties and parts of the park (try saying that five times fast) that I think might just work: All the Islands Of Adventure islands, Springfield with the Simpsons Ride, The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter, with Harry, Ron, Hermoine, Hagrid, maybe Dumbledore if they decide it doesn't take place during The Deathly Hollows Part 2 & any other characters or creatures in the parks, themselves, the new Super Nintendo World (I would like to think that they could find a way for both Islands Of Adventure and Nintendo World to coexist), Amity Harbor (which might mean the game has to be made for teens, because we all know how bloody Jaws gets), maybe the KidZone, Nickelodeon Hotel because of just how immersive it tried to be, and you might can guess the rest. For characters aside from who I mentioned, I'm thinking--amomg other ones--Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, Agents K and Jay from Men & Black, with their corresponding attraction, as well as the aliens from the immigration office, since they can be met up close, if asked, as I learned, all six Simpsons (Homer, Marge, Lisa, Bart, Maggie & Grandpa) as well as Krusty The Clown in Springfield, The Mystery Inc. Gang, Shrek, Fionna & Donkey, Beetlejuice and all his friends from all iterations of his Graveyard Revue (though for Frankenstein's Bride, Frankenstein's Monster, Phantasia, Dracula, Cleopatra and Wolfman, use the revamped version that ran from 2014 to when the attraction closed for good), the Dr. Seuss characters that appear in Seuss Landing, the characters from the Mummy when it was about the archaeological team, The Terminator for a series of quests corresponding to his ride, and Gru, his daughters & a few of the Minions to name a few. For attractions: E.T. Adventure, The Cat In The Hat, Harry Potter And The Forbidden Journey & Escape From Gringotts, Shrek 4D, The Simpsons Ride, Men In Black: Alien Attack, Jaws: The Ride, Jurassic World: The Ride, Terminator 4D, Amazing Adventures Of Spider-Man, The Blues Brothers show (they're also characters in the game), Poseidon's Fury and Beetlejuice Graveyard Revue. I'm not thinking about it being online in the traditional sense, but they can have updates based on particular seasons if appropriate, and update every time there's a new attraction so that players always have something new to look forward to. What do you all think? Does that sound like an interesting concept? If most of those make no sense, I picked them all together because I want the game to basically be a love letter to all things Universal Studios, past, present, and future, so that it can both attract old fans who want to experience, say, extinct attractions, and new fans, to help them see just how awesome the park is. Also, for the bad rides, we can find some way to make them much better

I see Universal actually catching up to WDW by 2023/2024 when EPIC Universe opens. As long as Universal treats their FL residents and APs correctly, you’ll see that Universal will overtake Disney. I don’t understand how Disney has allowed this to occur, they have so much land and resources but they act like they’re landlocked. Universal went out, purchased a variety of properties and poof!!! They are building a 3rd theme park. I think Disney was happy that Universal stopped on the 3rd theme park when the pandemic hit but I think Universal caught Disney off guard with how fast they got back to it and now has a momentum that is seeing things coming together faster. I think Disney is hoping for Guardians of the Galaxy & Tron to help offset the amount of people going to Universal. Disney doesn’t understand that people wants another theme park there but they want to add these little lands vs a 5th gate. I left WDW AP when I saw how Disney was going during the pandemic. While I do think Epic Universe will be amazing and am super impressed by everything that universal is doing, I do think it's a bit overzealous to think that Universal would top attendance against Disney because of Epic Universe or In any other Universal location for that matter. People tend to leave out 2 key factors that keep Disney on top. 1. It's a family destination now and forever. Families with little girls are not planning trips to Universal, they are planning trips to see the princesses. Universal is amazing for thrill seekers but not necessarily family friendly (personally I like it that way, Magic Kingdom is unbearable for me lol). 2. Disney is very fat friendly. Now this is where a huge chunk of their die hard fan base comes from. Universal is notorious for being very restrictive in the constraints and overweight guests are unable to ride the most popular attractions (prior to my weightless I use to be one of those people). Disney was the only place I could go without worry or fear of being kicked off a ride. And as we Americans continue to grow around the waist Disney is the only option. Personally after Epic Universe opens my desire will lean more towards Universal, however I still don't think that it will be enough to eclipse Disney in Orlando. I do hope it leads to more innovation on Disney's end because Universal is doing an absolutely amazing job.

Universal can dethrone them with cheaper pricing cause Disney gets uncomfortably expensive
@harrylogozar

Another thing universal needs is probably more advertising When I watch tv I get ads for Disney world Disneyland Disney cruise line. I’ve seen almost no ads for universal besides a velocicoaster ad here and there. If universal maybe took some money to invest in more advertising. They have reached a point of no longer being unknown but clearly Disney still has a larger pull on the consumer. Universal has a deal right now where if you buy 3 days get 2 days free or something like that and that’s great. Now advertise it. An ad here, a banner ad on websites there and more people may invest in a trip to universal because they know of the said deal. It’s not a huge pull but it definitely can hit the penny pincher demographic which is a good chunk of tourists because vacations are expensive anything to make it cheaper is a good argument to do it in their books
@AttractionIdeas
@AttractionIdeas 2 года назад
Absolutely. I didn't mention that in the video cause I kind of took it for granted that they were advertising as much as Disney. But maybe I only felt that way since I really pay attention whenever a Universal ad pops up. Either way, your point stands true, they need to be matching Disney's advertising efforts.

I am not joking but I took a vacation to San Fran Last Year and saw an advertisement for Velocicoaster, nothing Disney. I think Universal has Velocicoaster and HHN for advertisement heroes.

Disney definitely needs to expand Magic Kingdom or even make a new park here in Florida!!! They could honestly even recreate something like a Pixar pier maybe call it Pixar Island

When it comes to the next big franchise, I would say that Lotr would make perfect sense as one as even though it is more appealing to older audiences than Potter and Nintendo, it has clearly made a massive cultural impact and it has just as much staying power as HP and Nintendo. The idea of Universal creating a movie or TV franchise with the level of lore as Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings is something they should do but if it’s going to get a land it wouldn’t be until a very long time as it would first need to make its cultural impact and gain a fan base big enough to justify a super immersive theme park land in the level of the Wizarding World and Super Nintendo World. With Middle Earth though, sure, it may be notoriously difficult to acquire the theme park rights, but having it alongside Nintendo and Potter would be enough to end Disney’s reign

Thing is Disney parks are already overcrowded, so if park attendance grew too much, it would be unbearable for most guests. That's why they are just increasing prices to get the same effect of more guests

What Universal Studios needs it's a fireworks show or any other night time show like World of Color.

A Universe is bigger then a kingdom. I want Universal to be better then Disney. As soon as Epic Universe opens up it will be Game Over. Universal All the Way!! As a kid I loved Nintendo and the film that came out to advertise Super Mario Bros. 3 was the "Wizard" with Universal in the background. Now fast forward to today Nintendo is now being part of the Universal family so now we have come full circle. And it is becoming more then I ever thought it could be. I am a very happy Universal and Nintendo Fan. This is my child hood, and it has evolved. I Can't wait for the up and coming years to see what happens next.

I disagree strongly with the pricing point. If anything Universal being cheaper is more likely to draw in crowds especially when comparing to Disney. Another thing that wasnt touched upon was the whole fast pass and Genie+ stuff, it makes what should be a vacation away from home and stress where you can just relax into a hectic nightmare as you try to ride all the rides you want. Legit I dispise the fact you have to wake up by 7 am just to have a CHANCE of getting a reservation for Rise of the Resistance. Compared to Universal where you can just get an early hour ticket and basically walk right onto Hagrids and Velocicoaster.

I wish universal would have kept its attractions like jaws, back to the future, twister, earthquake, etc. or ring the back to epic universe. Those attractions were the best gives new people a chance to enjoy them.
