How unlicensed sober-living homes are getting paid with taxpayer money | Preying on a People, Pt. 3

The FBI in Phoenix won’t say specifically which group homes investigators are looking into, but investigators say the overall scheme involves organizers targeting indigenous people from reservations in Arizona, New Mexico, South Dakota and even at local flea markets and medical centers.
The recruiters promise therapy services, yet offer alcohol during the transport. Organizers make sure victims are enrolled in the American Indian Health Plan through AHCCCS so they can make money off the benefits, licensed or not.
On a chilly January morning, we visited "The Zone," the largest homeless encampment in Phoenix where nearly a thousand people live in tents on the streets.
We found the managing director of N.G. Sober Living, Leon Kayijamahe, after being called to the area by a man named Michael White, the man we spoke with over the phone in part 2 of this series.
He says Leon dropped him off at "The Zone" after he was staying at the home for weeks. "The Zone" is where he says he was first picked up by Leon.

It is true. I have one next door to me and all the “patients” are Native American. They weren’t licensed for a year until I reported them. I had to get proof too because even the landlord who’s renting the house to the “provider” lied to me and said she rents the house to a couple with no kids. Thankful for cameras because I was able to get footage of the 10 plus people going in and out everyday. Now that house is listed as a licensed “sober living” facility. You don’t have to have any medical license or have any experience in behavioral health to start one, it’s a joke.

Wait, he wants to rat out the place, then get upset when they don’t want him staying in the house any longer & dropped him off at another location. Now he’s begging to go back into the place he bashed since the houses are so nice & it’s a clean place for him & others trying to get sober & to stay off the street. The bottom line is that these people opened their homes to these people to help them while struggling & then they want to talk badly about the place until they get kicked out. There’s no way Medicare or any insurance is paying up to $7k a month for 2 person, absolutely absurd.

Grace House was the worse I’m glad it got shut down I’m a Black Native American and it was Whites Hispanics and other ethnicities with American Indian Insurance and when I started questioning if they were Native they all said no and had no knowledge when they insurance got changed I went to donate plasma and came back to the sober house and all my clothes and personal belongings were outside the home and I was told not to come back.

We need real public housing which is free or no more than 15 to 20% of a person's NET income. The government needs to govern. Section 8 tax payer subsidization of private landlords is just a form of political corruption. There are plenty of wealthy people who are criminals, drug addicts, alcoholics and mentally ill. They are not homeless. Homelessness is a cruel and uncivilized national problem. Mortgage holders who rent rooms or entire houses are just creating a bigger bubble. The bank owns the home. All tenants should be able to pay the bank directly... not a mortgage holder.

A lady approached me at frys off avondale blvd asking to use my phone she said she was living at a sober living home and was picked up in a van from New Mexico! I asked why do you have beer in the bag she said they don't really care they don't provide services and her husband hit her while they both lived in the home no cops were called. I let her use my phone for a ride and ended up dropping her off near her home . This is a real issue she said no one in that home was sober or trying to be sober.they just take their benefit money. So sad

These people are extremely cruel and very dangerous. They even have non emergency transports on just about every reservation where certain drivers use their units to transport alcohol and drugs onto to the reservations. These people are the same people running these scamming sober living homes. I put myself into a few of them and I must say that these people have no idea whatsoever how to facilitate a rehab program. Please don’t be fooled. Do you know how little education and understanding it actually takes to become a medical professional. Many physicians have very little understanding of psychology and human behavior. Enter a rehab and see how much medical professionals understand. They can be dangerous, inexperienced and unaware. They continue addictive behaviors and reliance on pharmaceuticals and the medical system. They push pills that keep people in the system reliant on doctors and pharmacies instead of actual healing methods thst could positively impact a person’s life.

This is my best advice but YMMV: find good meetings and go to them, cut off contact with old friends and try to find some new ones but CHOOSE WISELY--this is even more important for the newly sober relationship pitfall, don't stick around forever unless you find a purpose in that and can handle it, use your time to find something that you like and make money, don't do methadone/subs, I tend to believe basically any psych med is counter-productive as well. I would contact AZDHS and see if the one you are staying at is licensed. If it isn’t, you should probably leave before you end up getting kicked out unannounced in the event they are shut down.

Pete Peterson & MA Andrea also at doctor Dearing family med JC Lincoln north. “Case managers” help stop people from working after car accidents. Disability claim is big abusive business. Licensing would be through Arizona Department of Health & Human Services. If you are receiving state assistance they should be a phone number on the back of your card. Just to warn you, the wait times can be long. Regarding licensing, there are many types of licensing. For example, a licensed therapist at a masters or doctoral level can have “trainees” underneath them. Depending on the licensed provider, there are some great programs out there with great providers.
