In part 2 of our investigative series "Preying on a People," we're hearing from tenants who say they stayed at sober living homes where alcohol and drugs are abused.
The FBI is cracking down on a scheme that targets and takes advantage of Native Americans that involves human trafficking and health care fraud.
Native Americans are 500% more likely to experience alcohol-induced deaths and 20% more likely to die from drug use, according to a 2021 report by Arizona’s Department of Health Services.
Now they’re being recruited from multiple reservations in our state, New Mexico and South Dakota by behavioral group homes and sober living homes. Organizers pitch services to the most vulnerable, but what happens when the services promised are never provided?

This is exactly why a license or certification should be mandatory for sober homes - with very demanding licensing rather than the seriously flawed licensing in Arizona.

I once stayed at a "sober living home" that was run by a retired cop. The house manager was the house supplier of whatever drug was your choice. Needless to say, I left after only 6 weeks.

This type of crap is happening in other states as well. They really push to get access to their SSN and ID or DL so that they can apply for benefits that the person never sees. I had a company try to run game on me as I was trying to get my son help, but I didn't fall for the okie doke so easy. A lot of them are ran by addicts who find out how to game the system. It's f'ing disgusting.

My nephew was sent by Pascua Yaqui Tribe to a house in N. Phx- 6 days later he left because he said a guy pulled out a knife on him & other illegal activities going on there. Now he has been homeless, refusing treatment because he lost trust. He does need professional help but is not getting heard or helped.

I’m actually in the 6th generation, from my greatx grandfather- Chief Piapot. He led nations, he was a revolutionary leader. So i calculated my generation from there, as he had created a cultural reset for generations to come (he was targeted, traded by the Canadian gov to US, and forced to the rocky boy reservation in Montana.) his actions have impacted my family so much, and not all in good ways but with me the trauma needed to stop. I wouldn’t allow my son to experience the same treatment I’d received, thus creating the change needed for his generation; my son is the 7th generation.

At the end of the day, it’s not even about the color of our skin- although that has its own obstacles- it’s reallly about the wealth or poverty of the spirit. The amount of love/fight left in a person. A broken spirit is a broken man, a broken man hurts others the way he’s been hurting. I’m learning more and more each day tbh, nevertheless, each of our voices matter and the compassion we give is life saving! Healing our current self will help our future generations to come, healing requires shining light on all of the darkest areas in our lives, when the young ones see they will follow in our footsteps. If we teach them to heal, the next generation will be healed- completely capable of creating a new walk of life for the next generation, one without the same severe traumas we face on the day to day.

I am a volunteer for the Hopi substance abuse prevention center and now I'm just on my own helping my Hopi Tewa people and some Navajo people as well. I actually put myself into a couple of these places and I must say that these places have no idea whatsoever on how to facilitate a rehab center. I now know which ones not to send my people to. In one of the houses that I was in a person who was also a client told me about a different program where he actually told them he was going to leave and the house manager told him that he would get the client a prostitute three times a week and even told him that he would get him meth. So far there have been four Hopi people who have died in these places. One of them didn't bother to inform the family of the death but instead took her body to a mourge and the mourge informed the family instead. As soon as this happened, the people who were running this scamming program vacated the house immediately. I only know of two really amazing rehab programs that I've been to one in Mesa Az called the ACTION PROGRAM and the other is in Prescott called DECISION POINT. I would choose the ACTION PROGRAM from the two. MAY THE GREAT SPIRIT BE WITH YOU ALL ALWAYS

I'm 53yrs old & every drug rehab & halfway houses I've been to are straight up scams to take advantage of individuals with mental health & addiction issues who are some of the most vulnerable people in america. For me, by God's grace i haven't used in almost 2yrs but being on methadone & staying far away from the dope scene. It's almost like I'm reinventing myself. Putting off selfish, egotistical way & make a sincere genuine effort to serve God by serving my fellow man. Putting others needs before my own & only in this way am i asking God for humility & strength to put to death my own selfish ego. As someone who runs a group home , am really surprised how people would do this to be they are supposed to help , you are providing them the substances they are trying to get rid of . I gain job in seeing out residents start school , get jobs stay sober and be able to leave and come back without relapsing. I was so surprised to to hear about some homes providing alcohols and drugs to people . Stay safe y’all . Don’t let people take advantage of you pls 😢. , know your rights and report to the states if you are not getting the proper care .

This is disgusting and this has gone on even with AZ Foster care system. It angers me. I lost my foster son because I didn't jump when the state said jump. Now he is in the system and has been in the paper a couple of times. He doesn't look like the same kids. He spent an abundant amount of time I a behavioral hosp. He also is native American. He had a loving FOREVER HOME!!! The state promised him a forever home & instead locked him in a facility and Drugged him. Shame o. The State!! I URGE EVERYONE TO PLEASE TAKE THIS SERIOUS!! Found out more about Motherland counseling LLC which my wife who works at a gas station who has regular intoxicated natives who hang out on the streets were promised alcohol to go with these 2 African men in a regular car in the middle of the night and when she confronted these 2 individuals they started acting strange and forced these men to get in the car who knows where these men ended up this morning

Idk if it's all over America but Reliable is a sober home and they told me it was a year program and I have been here for 6 months and now it is now 3 months. These Africans opening these sober homes are just taking American governments money and not doing their job. Go back to Africa. You are not welcome. Ruining the country. The Africans are just opening up these sober homes to collect the insurance money. They aren't providing the people the services they need. Sure a place to stay for the time. But these ppl don't just need fish they need to be taught how to fish as well as in. They need to learn how to get a job and learn the skills to survive. I rented a apt in Fond du lac WI and after four years of renting they bought into the sober living halfway house, methone ride company, payee Businesses understand what I'm talking about? At least five people died in four years in one building all with workers of some sort paid for and billed to medicare Medicaid. Its combined business are currently making tens of thousands every month and clients, elder disabled, mental health patients, parolee, charges to the state and federal. Rate of relapse is at least 95%. If they don't due they are usually busted within a year and start thru their program again.
