European fundamentals once again proved superior to USA's individual talent. Lithuania, led by Vaidas Kariniauskas, shocked the United States 110-104 simply by playing basketball the right way. In this video, BasketNews' Augustas Suliauskas demonstrates how the NBA stars disrespected the opponents at the beginning, how Lithuania's coaching staff outplayed Steve Kerr & why going 9/9 from the 3-point land wasn't luck.

As an American, all I can say is, "Ball don't lie." The USA team is constructed as-is for this tournament and Lithuania played a fundamentally sound strategy and won. Basketball is in a great place and since I don't follow soccer/football I'm enjoying the international-level trash talk ;p

I think big reason for the result is that usa underestimated lietuva. There was big difference between usa energy in first and second half. I've been telling folks FOR YEARS that today's players (NBA) refuse to box out. It's hilarious because the team that controls the boards typically control the tempo and increase the number of possessions for own team. Fundamentals will always beat talent when talent doesn't work hard...and rebounding is primarily effort.
@ian_ford

It won't change until teams begin implementing aspects of what Denver and Lithuania did. Dominating the glass. Sports are cyclical. The 90s defense countered the 80s offense. A defensive Renaissance is coming to the NBA. When, we will see.

Ball movement was brilliant for Lithuania and those extra passes is what I admire about players that played in Europe like Manu. And a team effort in rebounding and boxing out. I think more euro guys will come in the NBA in the next decade because they have such great fundamentals that teams can use.
@lilclorox8558
@lilclorox8558 9 месяцев назад
A lot of euro players actually dont succeed because of this very reason. They Are not used to commercial basketball that revolves around a single player (team's superstar) and they can't adjust themselves to it and Its simply not the game they love. Not even coaches can utilize them properly. For example Jan Vesely was drafted to the NBA and hated his time being there but is Now massively successful in euroleague

This reminds me of the USA team at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Same lack of fundamentals as shown here and they looked more like each player was playing individually in a one-on-one game, not a 5-person team game. The USA was very lucky to get the bronze medal in those Olympics.

One big problem for the USA is that it selects too many players that have been the best or second best player on their team all their lives and suddenly they have to play a supportive roll. It is not that they don't try to adjust but they have not built the habits for those rolls, fighting over every screen, boxing out every time, setting good screens, and getting only four shots a game. They have grown used to having teammates to do what we call "the dirty work" while they get plays called for their strengths on offense. I have to wonder if anyone has ever benched Brandon Ingram for not blocking out in his life. Same for Palo and Ant, big strong guys that should get some rebounds but never seem to. Add that to subtle things like the difference in how traveling and block charges are called and they lose the ability to just play in the flow of the game. They end up thinking too much out there and still being surprised by a 14 second shot clock after a turnover. I have seen some outstanding FIBA players struggle in the NBA for the same reason. There is more of an adjustment period than people think. It is one reason it was so surprising that Luka did so well starting his rookie year, but he is a special case.

I stopped watching the NBA decades ago, and only recently started watching college basketball again (after Muss took over as coach for the Razorbacks). The NBA, on average, is exactly what was seen in this game... lazy, sluggish, and disconnected. I'm amazed it still has a following. As for the boxing out, most college coaches don't teach it or expect it to happen, which has me wondering whether high school coaches do anymore. But the NBA is basically jogging down the court, playing a semblance of defense, then jogging to the other end when someone shoots. It's all marketing (selling apparel) these days.

I often hear how USA plays the game the wrong way but the expectation is always high for them regardless. To take a game off of them seems to be a major accomplishment while no one seems to talk about the number 1 ranked team in FIBA placing 9th this year. Lithuania played their best game and still only won by 6 and then lost by 19 the very next game. I think that fact USA rebuilds a new team every four years or so and are still dominant, losing a few games here and there, is something that is often overlooked. It’s just always a major talking point when they lose because it doesn’t happen very often.

amen... none of this team will play again in the next world cup... it'll probably be 12 guys who are currently playing high school somewhere. while Lithuanian will have about the same guys lol. plus lol it was one game... one team was incredible hot. The thing is that, for some reason, the USA doesn't give a crap about playing any international basketball tournament that is not the Olympic Games. AND the biggest talents in the USA also don't give a crap about playing for the national team, even if it were an Olympic Game. And because of that they will keep losing more and more games, most likely forever. To the USA, basketball lives and dies in the NBA and only the NBA. No country in the world is more disrespectful and basically xenophobic about other countries playing a sport as the USA is with basketball.

Refs actually were trying to save USA by giving some hardly understandable whistles to Lithuanians. 2 times USA players literally ran into standing Motiejūnas and Brazdeikis and somehow it was still blocking foul for Lithuanians. JV got 1 offensive foul in the 3rd quarter for an 'illegal screen' and on the same time USA players didn't get the same foul just moments before in their offense. Then one of the refs decided that JV didn't deserve to score 2+1 although he was fouled when shooting. And 4 out of 5 these calls happened in the span of 5 mins when USA was making comeback. In my opinion it's criminal that no one is actually mentioning these really questionable calls and that USA could not even win with it. Sometimes it looked that it's 6v5 on the court due to this fact.
