This video was made to take some of the mystery of piston valves.
This is the first in a series of several videos on how to diagnose and repair the various problems with piston valves. I only have a few videos in the series right now, but I will publish several more in the next few months.

Cool, Art! I had no idea that valves were hollow inside. It's amazing they don't get messed more often than they do. The cut-away is really neat.

Excellent! Very well explained. This subject many trumpet players are unaware of, mainly the GAP of the pistons and the reason why lubricate more frequent, there are trumpeters that take up to 1 week to lubricate their pistons (mainly in trumpets Stradivarius), because "they still run well", without noticing that generate slight leakage of air and the oil seals that leak (I have always perceived it). (I used the Google Translator, I apologize if it does not arrive. to understand what I have written)

As a Stradivarious owner/player, I was using oil at least every day, just because I wanted to maintain optimal performance and reduce wear. the others in my group were oiling far less frequently, usually weekly like you stated, for the same reasons you stated. Currently, I am playing less as I teach my son to play trumpet, and I'm finding that I only need to oil it once a week at the moment. This was a very good video and very informative. The cut-away block was great.

Thanks for the great explanation! I would love to see a video detailing the common actions needed to tune up some lightly hanging trumpet valves, it's surprising how little info there is out there! Thanks again!

This was very educational, thank you. There was one thing that you didn't mention which I think would be interesting to know: how does one determine the correct height of the felt? Do you use a borescope to look at the alignment through the various tubes?
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop 5 лет назад
There is a little mirror that you put down one of the valves to see if they are the correct height. It is hard to explain in words how to do it, but I hope to do a video on this in the near future.

@@TheBrassandWoodwindShop thanks. Although it seems so specific that an entire video about this might seem like overkill, it would be nice to see it.

Cool video. Do you have any tricks to fix compression leaks if the gap is small?

I made this one. I do not know anyone who makes them. I found a junk trumpet and cut it with drill bits, a jeweler's saw, and files. It takes quite a while to do.

Hi a friends yamaha trumpet perinet piston valve does not fit into the casing. The number corresponds to the number on valve and trumpet. Now amount of soft cloth polishing or oil helps. It seems the valve expanded as it does not fit to other trumpets whereas valves from other trumpets fit. So it seems the problem is the valve. I hear you talk of not dropping, have not asked him if he might have dropped it. Anyway can it be fixed and how, tnx much
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop 4 года назад
Try taking the finger button, valve stem, valve guide, and valve cap off of the valve and try to put the valve in; top of the valve in the bottom of the casing. See if it fits at all and how far it goes in. That will tell you where the problem is on the valve. Let me know how that goes.

Can you help me? It seems like my first cornet Valve did not work well. It's position not right so the airflow did not through well. It's very hard to blow especially if first Valve pressed. Need some help
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop 4 года назад
You probably need to change the thickness of the valve felts so the ports of the valve match the slide tubes. I hope to do a video about this in a few weeks.

Hi very Interesting vid thanks. I have been looking at buying a Mendini Trumpet. They say it has Monel Pistons MTT 30CN . Are they good ?

@TheBrassandWoodwindShop 4 года назад
I do not know that much about them, but I think they are made in China and stenciled. I am not sure though, so don't quote me on that. You may do better to get a used American or Japanese made trumpet.

I wonder most people in the past centuries wouldn't even know how trumpet valves work, they would just play it, I didn't know how these valves work, until now.

I understand the bounce of the spring in a bottom sprung valve because the valve is above the spring but how does a top sprung valve bounce seeing that the spring is inside a casing on top of the second part of the valve
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop 3 года назад
The spring pushes on the valve guide which is inside of the top of the valve.
@selpingos

@@TheBrassandWoodwindShop I dont think i see it still....LoL coz the valve guide is at the bottom of the spring. When you pull the valve out and clasp it with your hand and try to depress it it doesnt go down. Haha sorry for my ignorance. I still dont see how but thanks for taking the time to explain. Appreciate it

@@selpingosit’s very well explained. You can see it at the start and around 30” or at minutes 2. The pistons are always at the top of the valve case, upper cap keep spring in place, insider’s valve case there’re a middle stop / rest position for Guide and spring, so it’s easy to understand. Review the video again, it’s awesome explanation of how it works.
@nickdempsey211
@nickdempsey211 5 лет назад
The space between the piston and the casing is supposed to be 0.001” or *less*! That’s so small that even a tiny grain of dirt or grime could inhibit valve action, as well as scratch up the surface of the piston or casing, causing more problems.

What are the holes in the valves for.
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop

I cut the holes in the valve section so that the viewers could see what is going on inside of the valve casings.
