It's soo true. When I took phonetics lessons at college some years ago it was so hard for me to distinguish many vowels according to tongue position. I'm a Spanish speaker and yes, you're right... We have only 5 vowels and learning English in detail is really difficult. But I admit those lessons are enjoyable at the end :) Very nice video I enojoyed it a lot :)

Hello! I do like your teaching way. I understand more when I watch your videos. Congratulation! I would like you to make some videos about meta-operationnal grammar (GMO) and Micro system. Thanks in advance.

Great run through. Vowel sounds in English are evil! You have monophthongs, diphthongs, triphthongs, vowel lengthening, offglides and, to make things "interesting," the "strange" things that happen when vowels are followed by an R sound. Just evil! LOL

Yeah, I was tempted to add in a section about rhotic vowels, but then I thought I shouldn't bog this video down with too many details. Someday I hope to make a video 2.5 in this series with some of the more complicated details that I left out.

@@FingtamLanguages I think you're right in that Goldilocks zone with this one. If you start adding every single detail, people start zoning out :)

This is great video that neatly summarises the important stuff on vowel phonetics. Are you planning to do one on consonants soon?

I must disagree with how you count the number of diphthongs in English. Technically, there are seven, not five, but in a phonemic analysis (as opposed to a phonetic one), I would say there are only three. Four of the seven don't count phonemically because they're entirely predictable. They are the four tense vowels, [ij], [uw], [ej], and [ow]. These are predictable because the off-glide always goes straight up in the direction of the roof of the mouth, thus they are phonetic, not phonemic. They are merely the phonetic realization of the phonemes /i/, /u/, /e/, and /o/. The other three, [aj], [aw], and [oj] make a difference in meaning and are unpredictable in phonological terms--hence, they are phonemic diphthongs in English.

He didn't say there were five diphthongs. He said "but the five _main_ ones in English" 8:16 . For the purpose of this introduction for language-learners (and not for phonetics101 and good ol' Ladefoged) to the gnarly topic of IPA phonetics, or the gnarly topic of phonetic transcription and representation altogether, he has admirably found the golden mean.
