Thanks very much.. i brought my car to a local shop and they couldn't diagnose the problem of my car. The car would crank but not start and no dash lights. (Dash lights worked before and no start, but eventually they wouldn't light up at all anymore) I suggested the ignition switch, and it fixed the car. This all after watching this vid. My 93' VW Corrado Vr6 wouldn't turn off even with the key out. I was buggin out. I had to remove the air filter then block the air intake with my hand until the engine shut down. That was the most stressful part of owning this car. Thanks for the video content!
I had the problem with the key not turning and have successfully done the replacement on three other mkv jettas. This time on my daily driver, after reassembly, no power in the on position nor starter position. Disassembled, checked all connections, same result. Installed a second new ignition lock mechanism with same results. Aftermarket part did not include wire harness. Thoughts.
Thanks for the info. I think I finally (after about 2 years of fixing different things) fixed my 2001 Passat. After watching your video, I realized all the issues I've had were due to a faulty ignition switch.I bought a new switch, replaced it and now car runs like new. I have the impression that I have finally fixed what it seemed to be a mystery..
OMG! We had a pretty dark blue used and "possessed" 2004 VW Jetta once, and it had a LOT of scary glitch issues. Flashing dash lights, wildly activated windows, crazy acting sunroof, jumping door locks, etc. Once it shifted into Park while driving, throwing all of us forward violently in a loud, grinding lurch!!! We all jumped out of the car scared-to-death in fear it was going to explode or something. We traded it after that incident taking a huge $$$ hit, but glad to be rid of it. My kids said, "No More Jetta's!!!" to the tune of Mommie Dearest. Hahaha I wish I had known to ask someone to check the ignition switch. Maybe we could've saved it.
Interesting video - last year i purchased a 2010 Golf GTI Mk6 with about 30,000miles on it and it had a faulty ignition switch. Symptoms for me were the radio turning on/off by itself. A VCDS scan indicated several faults relating to the ignition switch. I replaced it myself and took me a few hours (hard to get the old one out + removal of steering wheel and airbag) but new switch works fine.
Again, this is not the first time that Charles has provided me with great information that helped me figure-out what happened with my car! I watched the entire video and in it, he mentioned one thing that confirmed what I had been thinking. He probably did not even know it, but it was so useful to me. Here is what happened: My AC went out in my car. I found a small 5 amp fuse blown, (#4 in a 2009 Jetta) replaced it and it blew again, I unplugged the AC pressure sender and the replacement fuse did not blow. Then got a new pressure switch and the fuse blew again. I unplugged the AC compressor switch, fan module and climate control module... the fuse blew again. Hmm... I knew that the only thing between the AC working well and not working at all was turning the key switch. I watched this video and heard him mention that in come cases, the AC would not work. I ordered a new electric switch... and "the old one may have to come out in 3 pieces", like Charles said! Thanks a million again!
One common source of ignition switch/lock failure is a key ring that's too heavy. Tom and Ray Magliozzi (of Car Talk) took this one on and, notably, they said they'd seen it most often on VWs. You likely won't kill it if you just have it on a ring with your house key but if your ring has more keys than an open mike night, you might be in trouble.
I replaced mine with one I ordered from ebay. You weren't kidding about removing those switches, it's a great deal of pain and horror, lol. I roughed it up quite a bit until the white casing was stuck, then heated up a fruit knife and cut through the plastic clips in order to release it. The issues I experienced: - the radio needed some time to start (I've got an appradio 3 from pioneer) - the interior lights immediately switched off when I turned the engine off without removing the key - the anti-carjack couldn't decide to lock the doors, reset its system, relock the doors and or release the doors after some time. All is gone fortunately, did a quick scan with vcds and all seems to function all right. I'm not sure if there is causality but I didn't drive the car a whole lot and the battery wasn't up to its right capacity for some time ( I could tell by the interior lights) but short after the initial signs the switch caused an error and after the battery was replaced the issues I described remained.
Two 1.2mm (pink) syringe needles work perfectly. Insert the needles (sharp tips facing outwards, towards the metal), rotate each needle 180°, pull the switch out.
I’m having the same problem with my EOS except for my key don’t want to turn neither but when I do get it to turn to the off position, guess what just stay started lol so I’m just replacing the switch in the lock cylinder hopefully that fixes it

I can't even turn my key!! I can turn it just enough to release the steering lock, but it WILL NOT turn to the first position or past. I'm not sure where to start. the key still works in the doors so I don't assume its too worn, its a 5 speed 2.5 se 12 Jetta, what do you recommend?
On 2005 Passat, in order to avoid removing the steering wheel and fooling with the air bag, I ended up sawing off the front screw tubes off the front of the bottom steering column cover, with a hacksaw blade. The result is it goes back together easily, with 2 less screws, and looks fine, but is just a tiny bit loose in front. I realized after removal that I could have just sawn off the left side screw tube and still gotten it out, and only lost one attachment point instead of 2. Oh well.
Hey just tuned in because having problems with the immobilizer signal in my vehicle,2010 Volkswagen cc sport . I noticed when it hit outside it want read the key and give me the code, but when it cools it cranks right up.

Hey Charles, just installed an aftermarket radio and did everything correctly and checked over three times and all is good. Everything works when plugged in, but it doesn’t turn off with the ignition like my old radio did when I turned it off. 2005 vw touareg
sometimes you have to switch around the red and yellow wires, use multimeter to chech which one is constatnt 12v and which gives 12v only when key is on on position, and then wire accordingly
Perfect Explanation!! Congrats!! My radio and parking sensors have failures, sometimes they work sometimes(most of the time) don't work. I checked that the yellow wire that goes on the radio, the one linked to the ignition, don't have power. Could be the ignition switch or cables? many thanks!

I just googled an issue I'm having with my 2011 jetta and your video was the 1st thing that came up. I just had the Ignition switch replaced and when I got the car back the passenger window started acting possessed and would go up on its own. It would go up an inch or so at a time and every now and then just go all the way up. I called the dealer where I had the work done and they said one thing absolutely has nothing to do with the other. I guess I'm just a lucky guy who has these wonderful coincidences happen to them. Can you please let me know how one would be connected to the other. Thank you
I had an even more hilarious/scary case. My Golf Mk6 was peacefully hanging on a lift with the key in "0" position, mechanics were servicing brakes, and suddenly the radio turned on and started playing some harsh death metal (Vader, IIRC) mid-song at "highway, windows down" volume level. Poor guys performed a perfect duck-and-cover leaping away from the lift. This happened due to a point of failure in the "new" style switch not mentioned in the video - a key detection button in the middle. It eventually gets soaked up with silicone from surrounding contact area and becomes mostly non-conductive, but still eventually makes contact, given the key was not moved for half an hour or so. In VCDS logs it looks like a constant short on circuits X, S, P and 15 with intermittent shorts at circuit 50.
@@Friebe1000 Managed to solve this problem twice by degreasing the rubber contact pad within the ignition rotary switch (1K0905865A), but the problem kept returning after around 3 months. Finally, I've changed the switch altogether and the problem iswas finally gone.

I just replaced my ignition housing and switch with hamburg technic parts. the car starts up perfect now but when I take the key out after turning it off and open the door the bell for the key in ignition warning chimes. Key fob will not unlock or lock the doors. could the new ignition switch be faulty? I am about to replace it for a oe one and see what happens. I destroyed my original one when pulling it out

2014 Jetta, have had problems getting my car to start but today it decided it didn't want to turn off. The key would go forward but not backward. I have a 2004 VW Beetle that I absolutely adore, but she recently came up with no turn signals, no headlights, no heater, no horn, and no radio. Fuses were fine. Even a mechanic was pretty baffled when I brought it to him. After some googling I came to the conclusion it had to be the switch, because everything else worked (even the hazards... so the bulbs weren't dead for sure!). Gonna try changing that piece out and hope for the best!!

Often when I unlock my 02 golf with the remote, the front doors will not open when the handle is pulled, but the back doors will. I open the back door and close it, the front door will open with no change to the door latch. In addition to that the door ajar light will illuminate while driving when the door is securely in place. Also I have turned the radio knob and the interior lights come on. Could this be a bad ignition switch? Thanks for the help, love the videos.

On 2005 Golf TDI I get a light that looks like a key and I have to take the key in and out. The last time it did it I had to adjust the steering column position before the light went out. So I was wondering if it was ignition or the wiring harness.

Dear Sir: Owner of a PASSAT 2.0 turbo 2007 Made in Wolfsburg, Germany .What is your advice of the cause of Ignition switch failure, (non rotating). Push-pull style, where you insert the electronic key in the slot, and the same "key" become the starting switch when you push it to the bottom, once the engine starts, just,, stop the push and- drive the car. It does not start, the electric starting motor, not any sound of it, like there is no flow of current (battery new and charged) And when I pull out the "Electronic Key" it does not pop off nicely , you have to get it out with some force. Have a 2006 VW Jetta GLI and what I think is the ignition key turns the radio on, the AC, the dash lights and gages but won’t turn to start the car. If the key turns those things on shouldn’t it be the actual ignition key that should turn the engine on? Thanks
Have you ever had to cut out the key barrel section from the main lock mechanism? Ive got a mk5 golf and the key just spins around and does nothing and i cant pull the key out.
My 14 TDI Passat was giving me issues with the ignition. Early warning signs. Probably all made of plastic. Typical VW part not expensive but to get to it $$$ labor.

So my 2005 vw Jetta 2.5l ran and drove perfectly fine then after I drove it I wanted to start it up real quick and it would not crank the gage cluster did not light up at all but my ac and driving light turned on I checked all my fuses everything was all good the one thing I noticed is that when I took the key out afterwards it was hot would this all directly correlate to a failed ignition switch?

VOLKSWAGEN TRANSPORTER TDI SYNC 70X1A Reg.nr: BD60980, replazed a start engine who wont turn, bouth a new from skruvat.no mounted it on car, car starts easy, but start engne wont turn off. så had to hurry dissconect +wire from battery. Changed egnision svitz, but still startengine sprins around with no key in egnision, and celenoid is not pushing axle foward to crank engine.. only bbrrr sound from starter. Pliz help me..

What about when the key occasionally spins freely.... Before my car stopped starting a couple of times my key would turn clockwise freely..almost like the lock disappeared. Then I would turn it back to try and take the key out I would hear a pop and the key would work normal again.. now I have a crank no start and it did it again last night when I was trying to diagnose the crank no start.. could my switch be causing this

@@kaczuchasly5174 no I never had that problem. Mine would just shut off while driving. Friday it shut off about a dozen times. Starts right back up no issue. Try to move and it'll shut off like you turned key off. I took it back to dealer fri morning. Hope they can figure it out. I'll keep you posted.
Thank you for the information. I have a golf mk6 2.5 golf and it started right away but after an hour of driving on the highway the car just suddenly died with no warning. Ever since I was unable to start the car but it cranks. I changed the plugs fuel pump, the fuel filter and the air intake is clean. Is it possible that it might be the ignition switch?

My VW Key will not rotate back to off and thus I can not turn the car off with wiggling it for a couple of minutes. The key refuses to rotate back to the off position. Once the key rotates back to off then no problem.. What part is required to be changed, the switch or lock housing or both?? Thanks for your video. Good Job..
currently working for vw havent had to replace a switch yet but i have replaced a few jammed lock cylinder housings recently had some jackass trade a car in that had a bad lock housing he attempted to replace the cylinder and put it on 180 degrees wrong that was fun. nothing like removing a lock housing and those awesome shear bolts in a parking lot while its 100 degrees in the car. ended up replacing the lock housing and cylinder. we also had an eos that had the same window madness in our shop not sure what the fix was i was preoccupied and forgot to ask. love your videos
My 2009 VW beetle ignition switch always fails ( i.e. i can’t turn the key in the lock ) on a really hot day, so i assume it’s something to do with the metal expanding in the lock mechanism. I watched the video, but i’m still not clear on what the actual cause of the problem is. Would a new key fix this? Does it need a new lock mechanism if the problem is just intermittent? Is the problem due to components wearing down, metal wearing down, mechanical parts failing or electrical components failing?

Hey Charles. I have a 98 Jetta GLX. And my dash started making a beeping sound. But I realized that if I move the key a hair towards me that the beeping stops. But it continues to beep while Im driving. Is this the Ignition Switch causing the beeping noise??
I have an mk6 that is behaving very randomly. The sun roof opens and closes (no obstruction on the rails). Sometimes i hit the remote unlock and does nothing, when i get in there is no dash lights when turning the switch. After waiting a bit and turning the key i starts. I was driving the other day and while driving the speedometer would go to 0 and then back up after 3 times it stop doing it. So weird, maybe an ecu problem or some bad wiring? The battery poles are clean and protected.
I couldn't get the key in the ignition. Trans locked up. Dead in the worst part of town. AAA guy played around with a screwdriver, moved something and it worked again. Do I need a new ignition switch, is something broken?
Hi, I have a VW Passat 2012. I noticed the fuel pump still working after the engine was shut off, even when I take off the key, the pump still working for about 2-3 minutes, and then it makes a small pow noise. I checked the Fuel Pump Relay and is seen to be o.k (makes the clicks and has a measure of 0.03 to 0.04 Ohm). I ask the question because sometimes the car stalls idle or tries. I check if I can find a fault in VCDS nothing shows. I will appreciate the help because I don't know if a bad switch can produce that. Thanks.

Hello, question.. 2012 VW Jetta TDI.. I have had issues within the last year my car will either stall out or trip a g28 code and go into limp mode.. replaced the ECU, the dual mass flywheel, timing belt and high pressure fuel pump same time, the wire harness, and both crank and cam sensors twice. All fuses good as well. Could a failing ignition switch be the cause? No mechanic can seem to pin the cause.. last shop it was at said everything looks good checked the values and the motor said it was good were it should all be. Voltage was even good on the g28 sensor. Any advice is be appreciated
I have a 2002 VW Eurovan Weekender. I've had a diagnostic run on the van and everything seems be working fine brakes included. However, now the headlight shut off and come on and the brake light will come on and beep and then turn off. I suspect it's the ignition switch because when I jiggle it the headlights go off and come on. What part do I need? And can I do the replacement
Hi Charles, thanks for the great videos. My 2006 new beetle has a no crank, no start all of a sudden. The dash lights all come on and its a new battery. I noticed that when I turn the key there doesn't seem to be an accessory position (like no click stop). Its just smooth to the start position. Should it have? I don't recall when I started before if it did but from all the cars Ive ever driven they had an accessory position. I drove it last year for while (its newer for me) and then parked it for the winter. Now I try and nothing but dash lights. I hear a click or a buzz of something possibly at the starter but not sure. I was going to replace the starter but maybe its the switch. Also if I replace the switch do I have to get a new key for it? Thx
I have a 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio. Key is hard to turn most of the time and then when it turns over and starts I have to quickly rotate it back just a hair so the starter will stop engaging. Is this a wiring issue or ignition? My guess is that it is both.
