VW key barrel removal, with the key stuck

Hi, no, if the transponder doesn't recognise the electronic signal from your key, the key will still turn but the immobilizer will kick in and prevent engine from starting. the key barrel is mechanical and set to the physical shape of your key blade. as you can see when we removed the transponder ring and the barrel itself, there was nothing there that should have prevented turning. this is because the main cause of the problem was further back and part of the steering lock mechanism had seized.

I have the same problem, how did you resolve that situation? I am wondering if I have to remove the steering wheel etc so I can change the whole lock assembly

@@jorisvb I used a hammer to tap & quick dry lub

Pull down the steering adjusting handle. Rock the steering wheel hard in all possible directions while gently trying to turn the key on. It works in most cases.

How did you fix it ?

@@MTMMotorServices Re Mk 5 Golf - After this I ended up drilling up into the Aluminium Key barrel housing to remove the Steering Lock and then reassembling the mechanism. Aslong as you've got the key fob to disarm the immobiliser

Exactly that’s why I’m confused it won’t let it turn on what do I do

@@Modern-Gladiator I ended up getting it to turn. I took the whole assembled out and smaked it with a hammer a bunch while jiggling the key and it ended up turning.

If it is siezed solid then unfortunately you will have to get the vehicle recovered to a workshop.

The plastic cover prevents the cylinder from releasing fully

If you wiggle the steering wheel and turn the barrel it should release the lock. If its still not playing ball then the issue could be the unit itself. You'll have to remove the steering wheel to strip it down.

@@MTMMotorServices Oh god, I mean.. I go to position 1 or even 0 and my steering wheel locked. So stupid mistake, now I know. So dissasembly unit is way to go? should I be afraid of airbag? (battery off). I go into it because of ignition key. I turned it off from car and its still running. Thanks for reply!

@@michalknapek5697 if the battery is off, after an hour it should be safe to work on. But we always recomend de activating the Airbag system with a diagnostic machine. Unfortunately to get at that unit you'll have to remove the steering wheel and disassemble the the the airbag wiring (clock spring). There are videos on youtube detailing this procedure. @@MTMMotorServices a quicker way to de-energize the electrical system for handling SRS stuff is to take the ground off the battery then put a small shorting jumper across the cable ends (NOT the battery). just make sure that ground isn't anywhere near the battery post if it touches your jumper will vaporize.

If you disconnect your battery for any reason make sure you have your radio pin number or you radio won't work once you reconnect your battery.

there can be some variants, but if you can see the hole on the key barrel then it should be either the same or similar atleast. i cant say for sure without looking at one myself.

If you remove the barrel, be sure to not Move the internals inside the steering column. This removal and re fitting can sometimes fix your problem but likely the problem is part of the column itself. If you don't feel confident and competent I would always recomend you take the car to a professional

Thank you for super fast reply. But still I can turn on my engine, with a stucked key. Like this. I kill my engine by geting off engine fuse, and then disconnects battery line with. When I wanna drive, I do the same thing above inversely. And getting a car and turn on my engine. Does it happen with broken steering column..?

I really have no budget for fixing it. So..... Hope it would not be that much cost..

@@youngkim6740 potentialy the issue is deeper into the column and normaly requires replacement. This requires removal of VW security bolts and re calibration of steering angle with a diagnostic tool as well as de activating the airbag system. Although just by removing and re fitting may solve your problem, I'm just making you aware that if it doesn't, then it is an indication that the ignition switch inside the column unit is at fault. It's labour intensive and also a common problem on VW's. You should be abke to find a video online for that, but again. Due to the nature of the job, I'd recomend a professional

@@MTMMotorServices man I fixed it at 2:30 AM just before i write this comments.. You dude you're like a god. I penetrated several time the hole in ignition lock as your way on video, it works. I think this vehicle is kind of old one which is not enough to used to steering lock, so that might causes some jamming. But now it works so smoothly... I'm so thankful with that video. You are a such god for me! Thank you so muchhhhhhh dude!!!!

Yes, often the fault actually lays further back and it's the column itself that needs replacing. Not the barrel

@@MTMMotorServices yes , i have managed yesterday to get the cilinder out , but the housing you have to destroy , otherwise you have to buy 2 parts together , the lock itself kosts here in NL , about 270 euros so that you can use the original key. But , it is a nice video on youtube , people can save money.

@@Holydiver7019 you shouldn't have to destroy it, there are security bolts which are there so safety purposes. But there are ways and means to remove them. As the removal of these bolts are for safety reasons, I haven't covered it on my chanel. But there are videos on RU-vid on how to remove them

No, as you'd still need the immobiliser to de activate with the key fob.
