When I was about 14-16 years old I helped a vet work cattle for our and several other farms (vaccinations, dehorn, and “cutting the bull calfs”). Never liked the cutting method - razor blade for the bottom of the sack and a cutting tool to detach. We always put a purple medicine on/in the remaining sack. Also, we had to work them the right time of year because of flys. The only good thing with the cutting method was the mountain oysters fry after all the cattle were worked. The banding method looks to be a better approach. It allows a bull to be older when worked - we would never cut a bull calf that was older. The chute system looks to be a great system (watched your video on that). Most people don’t understand what it takes to raise cattle.

Banding definitely works; but Its not better than someone that knows how to knife cut them. Done right, there is very little blood. Also, a band is not 100% pain free, they still will lay around afterwards. I had a good cattle veterinarian tell me that with banding, the scrotum has to die, then fall off, then the healing begins. With knife cutting, the healing begins as soon as they leave the chute.
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 2 года назад
this was done a week ago...the largest bull's testicles are about to drop off...the newly banded steers went right back to grazing. Much higher risk to perform a surgical procedure v/s banding the cattle. No knife, no blood, less risk for infection and the testicles simply drop right off

Josh, put something temporary on the top of where you're leaning in to the holding pen. One sudden jerk from the bull or steer, and I see you banging your head on the steel. I'm thinking one of those pipe insulators put on there, should do the trick. Just to guard from getting unnecessarily hurt. Good job, I must say!

I’m growing macadamia trees on my farm. Pruning a tree to shape it has it own form of stress but it’s nothing like restricting the blood flow for bull calves. I remember helping my dad fix rubber bands around calf testicles when I was a boy. He had a device sort of like a pair of expanding pliers with two arms. Each arm had two posts. A thick rubber band was fitted around the posts then pulling in with device’s hands would expand the arms and stretch the rubber band. The band was placed over the bull’s testicles. We did this on calves a bit younger than the fellows in this video.

If the ratchet is on the right, it seems like it might have been easier to hold the band with your left; the same way you might cast a fishing rod with your left if the reel is on the right. Looks like you were getting twisted up trying to switch hands. Just a suggestion. Anyhow, nice video Josh! Cattle are a lot of work! They look tasty though 😅.

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer I've been a meat cutter for 40 years and besides being delicious they're also high-dollar. 8 to 10 bucks a pound. I don't blame y'all for doing it the easy way but when you're slaughtering 10 to 20 bulls daily and get 3 to 5 pounds per head, you save the nuts. Plus hearts, livers, tongues, tails ,head meat, beef lips and tripe. Worth an extra couple hundred dollars per head. And whether people know it or not they're probably eating some of the offal. But don’t take my comment the wrong way if you ain’t one to cut that is 1# of the best banding setups I’ve ever seen. I just personally don’t like how banded stunts growth. I can cut one and no more then 2 days you wouldn’t know he had even been cut.
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 2 года назад
yep...I'm not taking you the wrong way brotha....if you remove the testicle you remove the hormones...whether banding or castrating. These young bulls went right back to grazing 10 mins after being banded. Maybe look into one of these my brotha...most certainly you have to be sure you have 2 testicles in the bander...and I agree...a day old calf banded is not as good for the animal as a 6 month old bull banded

again....I'm not gonna band at birth and cheat my animals out of the hormones they need to grow the way nature intended. Conventional farming practice is to castrate at birth...then put a hormone implant in the steer's ear...seems silly when nature does it for us right?
@Mr.frag-out
@Mr.frag-out 2 года назад
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer josh i hope your well and I agree there are some benifits but I also raise cattle and band at birth. I give absolutely no hormones in any of my animals. No medications period except to save life of animal. All of my steers have grown to normal size and are very comparable to uncastrated bull calves even with early castration. Maybe run an experiment with one castrated early and one late you will see that there's very little difference. Actually there is a lot of data out ther that indicates that late banding has a negative effect on bull feeders. They go through a tough time adapting after there testosterone is cut of suddenly later in life. Just saying trying things for yourself in comparing the two is not a bad idea instead of following the leader. Oh buy the way thank you for being a nurse thats a tough job I have allot of respect and love for nurses for saving lives daily.

Welcome to farming....bulls can be aggressive, breed the other cows when not desired and taints the beef..giving it a "gamey" taste. Running a cattle operation like this requires attention to details....we want our cows to give birth in spring when the grass is at it's peak growth...can't just have bulls roaming around fighting oneanother and breeding our cows all year long. Remember..a bull can grow to over 2500lbs....that's a huge destructive animal that can kill you
