The e-jelly was invented by marine biologist Edie Widder. OceanX was able to film a humboldt squid in Chile with Edie Widder and her e-jelly. #squid #antarctica #marinescience #deepsea
@@tracey9888 It was a joke about a colossal squid attacking the cabin. Like, bro, they fight with sperm whales. They just need to break one part and decompression will end the job.
What lighting up like a Christmas tree when it's convenient to attract predators for that to even express as an evolutionary trait it must have been effective in some capacity
I still can’t believe something this size has never been seen alive/in good health, makes me wonder what else is down there, and if so how we’ll find it.
Did you know ... If we explored all of the land surface of earth to a km above the surface (higher than all natural and artificial structures) thats 148 million cubic km to study. The seas have 10 times more volume. It's like 10 more earth to search!
@@esotericpigthat is just untrue lmao. If you actually knew the megalodons habitat, deep sea is the total opposite of where it lived. They preferred warm coastal waters, like the ones in the Caribbean or Bahamas, the cold deep sea would have no food large enough to sustain itself and it would just die from temperature, water pressure and lack of food to sustain it
I recently learned because these animals are so huge, its likely moving costs a lot of energy. This means it’s possible that they’re “lie and wait” predators and snatch stuff that swims by them. It would be interesting to see if this light would make it move however
How come anytime someone talk about filming this thing they all make it seem like it’s only possible to operate a camera underwater by having people go down with it
I hope they actually try and worth with the toothfishermen and go that route cause theres so many cases of colossal squid actively interacting with the long lines and attempts to catch those fish. Including multiple now at this poing caught and brought to the surface alive. Colossal squid are showing themselves to be alot easier to film if they didnt live in such risky waters.
I remember watching a group of scientist come together to lure a Giant Squid using various means. It was the E-Jelly that proved successul in video capturing the Giant Squid. I hope in my lifetime we can video capture a Colossal Squid. These titan cephalopods are truly my favorite animals in the world. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I felt so cool when you showed the e jelly because that’s exactly what I expected you to say! I loved beyond blue and that game is actually the reason I subscribed to this channel ☺️
I remember watching a video about an e-jelly with the use of bait… unfortunately it didn’t lure a squid… it lured Sixgill sharks instead… that story came on shark week in the episode “alien sharks” I hope maybe next time if we lure a colossal squid, we make sure not to accidentally lure a sixgill
cooperation with pods of Sperm Whales would be a start. They dive to those depths in order to feed on big squid, so earning their trust is paramount in order to strap a lot of hi-tech recording equipment on them. The added bonus is they are also highly intelligent so can probably operate the camera in low light levels better than humans can.
I agree, but we need to remember that Sperm Whales don't have the thumbs to use our traditional cameras. So we would need to adapt and increase our camera technology in order to solve this problem. Some people in the industry believe that using electronics to read the whales brain waves and then sending a signal to the cameras is the right direction. We also need to work on creating electric devices that can handle the environment of the deeper waters in Antarctica namely the cold and the pressure. A number of companies have been working really hard to solve these problems though. So provided we can increase our relations in Sperm Whale society, we will likely be able to send a expedition in the near future.
So yeah, we’re gonna need you to put on this suit with all the LEDs on it and just get out there a wiggle around a little bit. We’ll be watching the whole time on the moni… Where you going?
let me get this straight, so the plan is drop a submersible witha E jelly to lure a colossal Squid to eat the "bigger predator" it's attacking? please make sure to record that too. we haven't had a good animal killer movie in years.
really a nice roundabout way of handling this. mimic the food of the squids food and the squid will come to eat the thing that came to eat our mimic. really smart humans
I’m betting on Ambush Squid. Those size tentacles with that size of a body screams to me that it’s hardly moving. It would be expending a lot of energy if it was an active hunter, especially at those depths.
I just imagine attaching a floodlight to the "E-Jelly" so you can capture a good, well lit shot of a Colossal Squid. But then I imagine that, that would basically be the equivalent of someone reaching for a burger and the burger suddenly lighting up like the surface of the sun.
