Pavel Rézl : Sorry the answer took al while, but we had our holidays. Yes, we are using pure vermiculite for a number of reasons. We may make a vid on it, but here are the main reasons: (1) It is a very clean medium (2) it can contain a lot of moisture, without being wet (3) The roots are kept very well intact when transplanting the seedlings (4) you can very easy pick seedlings out, when needed
DRCEVNL In my experience it breaks into flakes after few waterings rendering it useless in the long term. I like to mix it with perlite, though. 1 part vermiculite + 2 parts perlite works the best for me. Perlite seems to hold the structure well.
Pavel Rézl Hi Pavel For sowing there is no problem, beacuse we re-plant quit soon. We do not use it for anything else except for some Epifytes, where we press it in wet conditions, beacuse as you say after a while the container will be just half full. We do not use perlite yet, but a mixture may be a good idea. What do you grow in that mixture?
DRCEVNL Hi Ruud. I am growing the same plants like you: Sclerocactus, Pediocactus, Echinomastus and other cacti that are able to take up to -10°C in the unheated greenhouse. Used to prefer zeolite for sowing but now I'm switching to perlite/vermiculite mix.
