Me and my mates tried putting a band together quite a few times in the past, it never worked out, it always turned into a drinking session and nothing ever got done. This went on for years. I'm now 43, one of the guys im still best friends with and recently we've put together a Nirvana tribute (tribute to the music of) We we're just sat together one night and thought right let's do this, let's do Nirvana, the band we've always loved, it makes sense. So I put an ad out for a drummer, got a reply from a guy who lives not too far away, also into Nirvana and here we are, did some jam nights in Leeds a few month back and our first gig at a bar in my local town in Dec and we've more lined up. Couldn't be happier, I finally did it, we finally did it

"Making it " these days looks like a utube channel with a metal play button, and guitar course with a few thousand+ punters paying monthly subs.....and then rocking all the dream guitars you always used to wish you could afford. It doesn't look like playing in an. Actual band, at an actual gig!

@@lueysixty-six7300 You described me perfectly except I do play in bands and play gigs. If I died tomorrow I would say without a doubt I "made it." Even if I didn't play live now I'd still feel the same since I (and many others) can make a living playing guitar. What's your idea of making it?

Yea, I know the feeling of having a struggle to put together a band. I play in a band that is now called Wallrose. At first we had a lot of struggle putting together a band. All the band members were at completely different levels of experience, and everyone had different music taste. People came into the band and left all the time. At one point there was to bassists. But eventually we managed to get a full band, with experienced musicians. We started to write our own music, and played one of our own songs at a festival. But then as last summer came our drummer had to leave the band for military service, so now we're once again left without any drummer. For a month during fall we got a new drummer, but he left because he had a lot of other stuff to do. Now we're trying the best we can to get a new drummer for Wallrose

I'm 52 and I miss writing and playing. My bandmates and I never talked and 6 1/2 years ago one night we imploded. Still don't know what happened. It was lame. I love hearing band origin stories. Mine has a bit of a long one. When I was 16 I decided I really wanted to put this one band together. First run a had a group of guys that didn't seem insanely into it so I called it quits on it for a couple months thinking it was one of my crappy idea bands I came up with every couple months during that time. Fast forward a few months and I decide I really want to try it again and get two new guys I thought would be perfect. Thanks to the fact I was still in high school and two of us, including me, had full time jobs, and then eventually COVID, we didn't end up doing too much, partly because we wanted to do the whole meetup and write thing and we neglected the write by yourself and bring it to the other guys thing. Then we finally had a full lineup of two guitars, vocals, bass and drums. Second guitar player thought the music I wanted to do wasn't really the style he specialized in (we wanted to do Metalcore/Post Hardcore while he wanted to do more indie rock/pop punk stuff) and I replaced him with a guy who ended up getting a new job ended up leading him to not have the time to even hang out with his friends, let alone do a band. Drummer ended up leaving to do a new band. Bass player same story except he turned out to be a massive piece of shit (abuser) so guess I dodged a bullet. Vocalist I found out WAS a massive piece of shit (woman/child beater) so naturally he had to go. Then my whole depression kicked in of me thinking that maybe music wasn't for me and that I should try something else and what not. Then i started talking to an old friend who said he was down to help out, then eventually saw a guy that had some pretty cool vocal covers that was down to join. And a guy who really wanted to join a band so he started playing bass for us. My old friend ended up leaving to focus on his own project and we disagree on a constant direction for the band which did head us a bit down hill, but after dealing with a couple flakes, we got some songs that are almost done and we plan to have stuff out this year and hopefully plan to play out and we even discuss possibly doing a tour. Here's my advice to you reading this. 1. Before actually getting people to join your band, come up with a concept. Name, genre, your imagine, hell write full songs. No they don't have to be Bohemian Rhapsody or Master Of Puppets, but something you can show to people that would be interested in joining your band. Yes you could say "I wanna make music like Avenged Sevenfold" but that alienates people who would potentially be perfect for your band, who don't like A7X. How do you write these songs you maybe asking? Well if you play guitar, just put together some kick ass riffs you write into a song, program the drums, and maybe even attempt to sing over them. Don't know how to do any of that? LEARN! Don't wanna learn or don't have the time? Fiverr will be your best friend. Don't worry, it's not just pop artists who don't write all their songs once you start meeting people. Hell, the fiverr guy may end up joining, or at least becoming fans of you guys. 2. If you want to become the next big thing. Work towards it. Look into any big band you can think of. They all started from nothing and worked their way to the top. You don't start out as some crappy local band and magically one day get approach by some big record label guy and instantly start selling out the Wemblys and MSGs of the world. Utilize the living fuck out of social media. Especially tiktok. That's where all the young folk are at. Trust me. You want them on your side asap. As annoying as it is, spam invites on facebook and spam follow fans of bands you sound like. Yeah it's annoying but it still better than doing nothing. 3. Do thorough research on band members. Make sure they're not horrible people. And if they seem clean, make sure they don't go down the wrong rabbit holes and nothing comes out. If that ends up happening. Kick them tf out. If Vic from Pierce The Veil can throw out this own brother, you can throw out the rando who started sharing Qanon shit or came out to have slept with a teenaged girl. The last thing you want is something that will cause a PR nightmare that'll ruin your name.

I have had one band so far. My friend played drums and so did I, but he was better than me and I had access to guitars and bass (he only had drums). Although I got up on his level as a drummer I just picked up guitar and it was us from age 14 to about 19/20. Jammed with other random people but I was in a small mountain town where there's barely any musicians, let alone metal fans. Most people were either really terrible and enthusiastic, or really good but hard to work with. Finally met this kid at a local show who was doing these crazy low death metal vocals at the shows and did a great Nathan explosion impression, and I made it a point to force him to be my friend haha. Finally he knew a dude who "played bass" and we had to fight to get him to join up with us. Wed always go to the Walmart where he worked and ask him until Finally a year or 2 later he asked about the band. Now we had a full lineup. We rehearsed our asses off for months and got pretty fuckin tight before accepting a gig, and from there we played a solid 20 or so shows of our own in our town and some of the nearby cities a few hours away. We had a short set of original songs and would rotate covers of napalm death, six feet under, fearless Iranians from hell, GG Allin, impetigo, and a few others. The bassist was reliable but not very musically inclined sadly which was definitely getting to me, we usually had to have him turned down to a dull rumble that filled the space without being decipherable (a sid vicious deal) and eventually personal drama led to me letting him go. We had an older guy sit in on our last few gigs and we sounded great Finally. but that previous drama came up again and due to intermingling between the (old) bassists girlfriend and vocalist, I found out I really had done the bassist dirty by firing him. By that time the drummer was preoccupied with lame ass college and I was basically overworking myself to hold everything together way past its expiration date, so I folded the band. That was probably 6 years ago. I'm 28 now and in a new state so hopefully I can start something new. We managed to open for the mentors, mobile deathcamp (former Gwar member), and some underground legends in our short time which I am proud of, but being a death metal band in the sticks is a tough gig lol.

That made me reminisce my own band history. A lot of similarities too! I think I started my first band in '87 or '88. Our first rehearsal was just me and the drummer who later changed to bass, and we played Breaking the Law by Judas Priest. It wasn't easy finding people to play with in a small Norwegian town, but we found a drummer, and I decided to sing along with my guitar playing. We had a lot of weird names. Insulin and Asthma were two I remember 😂 Then we became Chromatic Death, and later just Chromatic. We had our debut at the local annual Park Rock event, but eventually the band petered out. I moved to a bigger city and played in many bands there over a period of 8 years. We were close to getting things going a couple of times, but it didn't pan out. Still, we had tons of fun!

You seem to be from my generation. It is quite rare for a band to still be together for that long. I think I know of 1-2 in my local group of musicians. I got my 1st band together at age 14. We were pretty awful & went our separate ways. My 2nd band evolved into another band & we stayed together for about 10 yrs off an on. For me, starting a band always involved befriending other musicians.

I’m also “the kirk,” have a James, and two bass players and they’re all years long best friends of mine and it’s really amazing when we jam. Thing is, we almost exclusively play metallica and megadeth songs cause it’s just like fun and cool. We’d love to start a band but I struggle so much with trying to write anything and rarely have good time to practice with balancing everything else in my life. Additionally, finding a drummer has been hard- specifically a drummer who likes Lars. Balancing two basses is also kinda interesting but it usually seems to work out fine. Just stuck in sort of a limbo and don’t know what/how to prioritize what I want :/

My Band started because of a Rock Band course at school. It was with a group of guys I was familiar with but I was only really friends with our bassist. I didn’t feel like I was a real part of the band though, being a keyboard player in a grunge/metal band, but I slowly built up more confidence, and we’re now writing an album and recording demos. One breakthrough moment for me was trying to sing “Man in the Box” by Alice in Chains when the band was jamming. I sang the verses quietly in the background, but I really went for it on the chorus and I startled the whole band. I started to think “I can kind of sing”, and I got a lot better at playing my instrument and now I feel like a true musician.

In my first year of high school (2011) I started to get more into drums and was eventually given a drum kit with a practice space to go with it, my younger cousin was playing guitar for maybe a year at that point and the both of us shared a passion for Metallica. Naturally the both of us would meet up at the practice space and jam out to Metallica and whatever else we could think of for 5-8 hours a day 7 days a week, me being still very new to drums our first 3-6 months playing together didn't really sound that great on my part, but I was determined to get better. Fast forward about a year later we tried out my other younger cousin for another guitarist, but he wasn't into that style on guitar so it didn't work out at first. Christmas time comes and he gets a Bass, so we invited him back to the practice space and we basically just said to him "Hey come up with a line and we'll jam along" 30 minutes later we came up with our first song that had this weird combination of Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nirvana. We ended up writing another 4-5 songs that year. Another year later the 3 of us are sitting at our cafeteria table and I asked the guitarist "Hey didn't Kyle sing in the talent show? and was he good?" he said "Yeah he did some David Bowie" that when I told the guitarist we should get him to vocals for us for the battle of the bands. He joined us and we got to practicing one of the songs we wrote. We had to get another more experienced vocalist to write lyrics for us (she lived hours away and couldn't play for us) two weeks later we play the battle of the bands and unfortunately lose to a band doing Country covers. A few more months later I get in contact with a guy who owns a recording studio and we make plans to record our first 10 track album, but will need $1000 to do it so I unfortunately made the decision to sell my 4-wheeler which paid for the recording. we record the album and all is going well on our part until the post-production, something happened on the sound engineer part and the audio would slow down and pitch down almost a full step (we're primarily E Standard). The guy couldn't fix it on his end so he ended up just giving us a bunch of stuff worth $1000 (he had his own music store) as he already spent the money on bills or something. We were pissed so we decided to just record it ourselves as the guitarist just started his first few months of doing audio engineering, set everything up in my bedroom and spend the next 3 days or more re-recording the drum tracks and the vocal tracks (vocalist recently graduated so was only home for a few days). A couple months later we got the album done and ready to get onto Spotify, RU-vid wherever you could stream it release it and get to work on another. I suggested an EP since it would be faster to record as all the other members except the guitarist and I have gone to different parts of Canada and could only meet back up for a few days during Christmas. We wrote and recorded our EP and it's just been sitting on a hard drive since 2016. Not much else has happened since then and occasionally me and the guitarist will exchange guitar/bass parts and I'll record drums over it. Shame not much else has been done since 2016 because there is some tracks we've done that I genuinely love to listen to, but we're all adults now doing our own things in life and we all live so far apart so it was to be expected really.

Sounds like you are on the right track. Much respect for you and your brothers. Ever hear of The Warning? Like you, they are a three-piece sibling band, but are sisters. They just celebrated their 10th anniversary as a band and the oldest is just 23. The Warning became famous for their cover of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” in 2014 at the ages of 9, 12 and 14. They have toured with/opened for such bands as Muse, GnR, The Foo Fighters, Halestorm, Three Days Grace, Royal Blood, The Pretty Reckless, Def Leppard, among others. They’ll play around 100 gigs this year on three continents (North America, Europe, South America), as well as some of the largest and most prestigious rock/metal festivals in the world. Keep that brotherly magic going and practice, practice, practice. Your efforts will be rewarded. And The Warning, like you, are never late for practice. Congratulations on your band and good luck going forward.

My friend and I tried for years and finally got a great band together. We worked hard and eventually got invited to play bar venues. Everything was going great but then 3 of our members got addicted to pain pills and it was all over. That was 20 years ago and it still breaks my heart. Maybe you could do a video of how to help or get help for your band mates? Thanks Mike, this video healed a lot of my wounds. Cheers

I’m 14 and I’ve been playing guitar for 2 years and I found out one of my friends from church also plays guitar and listens to the same music as me so we started a band. We got pretty decent with each other before we started looking for a bassist and drummer, finding the bassist was super easy. I went to guitar center and in the back there a flyer for a bassist who likes metal so we called him and now he’s our bassist, and my friend from school played drums so he’s our drummer, I’m the rhythm guitarist and singer and me and my lead guitarist are playing live this week together

You must be doing quite well Mike. I see a LOT of new guitars in your hands these days. PROBLEM is with forming bands... Everyone likes rap and garbage electronic music these days. you can't find anyone who even LIKES real music, much less PLAYS it. My son is having a hard time with it. This AIN'T the days of Bon Jovi and Queensryche. Or even REM and the B-52s. This is the age of Cardi B.

Im 18 and starting a band, and i have to say my biggest struggle is that no one in my area plays bass and i dont know any guitarists but me lol. We have a keyboardist, a drummer, and im vocals and im filling in for lead guitar but i plan to do rhythm guitar when we have a dedicated lead guitarist. Right now what we have works but without the baass player it feels hollow in a way

I got dave mustaine'd out of the band I was in lol. Back in 2007 I performed a solo spot at my school's winter assembly that went out of this world. Instant notoriety. Suddenly everyone knew who I was. No longer the quiet metalhead even chicks would now give me compliments lol. So summer of 2008 rolls around and I get asked to join a band and I try out with some Metallica songs. Four horsemen and call of ktulu. Solos and all. Had my name in the MySpace page and after a few weeks. They start dodging my calls asking them when the next practice session was. After a month I check out the page and they replaced my name. Cowards. Lol. It turns out the lead singer/rhythm guitarist was really insecure about my abilities that he had his bassist lie for him saying the band broke up because the singer got caught by his parents with weed. Lol I wish I could make this up.

I started a free referral service. First dibs on musicians from 4 counties! Hehehe. I brought free bulletin boards to the music stores that didn't already have them, posted cards, and musicians would call me up, I'd take their information down on a little questionnaire and file it. Bands would call and I'd go through the files hooking people up and making lots of connections. I probably had 200 musicians on file after 16 months. I thought it was a pretty good idea.

I’m a guitarist who also sings as well as me doing a lot of the songwriting and coordinating. I’m seriously trying to get a band together currently with people who are available and want to jam regularly. So far, I’ve tried roughly three or four times to get some like-minded individuals together and actually frequently jam with them, but so far none of it has been very successful. Apparently where I live drummers are in short supply as well because we’ve only ever found one drummer and he just wasn’t able to commit as well as him living quite far away. I’ve tried with three guitarist so far. One who was not good at all and had different taste, one who I had great chemistry with but had remotely different interests, the one that I’m working with right now is a little bit younger and him and I may actually get somewhere because he’s very skilled and we have similar interests. The bassist who I’ve got is a couple of years older and he’s awesome. Because of him being older, he works a full time job outside of town so he’s only free on the weekends and my other guitarist is only free on the weekdays. Unfortunately, it feels like we’re ergonomically fucked which sucks. Hopefully this can start working out soon. Also because I’m a lead guitarist, I’m seriously debating on finding someone else to do lead vocals but for the time being I’m cool with doing the job. In the meantime I’ll just keep trying to get better and write some more music and hopefully the time will come. Just need to keep hoping. 🙂🤘🎸

When i was 7 or 8 my step dad got me his old guitar from when he played as a kid and I loved it at that time I played drums already but i felt different about this guitar I didn’t play it much cuz I wasn’t very good. Then one night my mum and step dad were watching a documentary on Kurt Cobain and then I went to an record store and bought the album ‘Bleach’ and I was in love. That inspired me to learn the guitar. Soon I wrote my on songs but they were silly I was on 11 and thought they were so “deep”. Because of my songs I wanted people to make a band to play them with. But I was the only one who liked them. Because of this I’d write songs and then pretend that a grunge band from the 90’s made them and I created a whole band in my head. I pretended to be those band members I made in my head and put on fake concerts pretending to be them. When I was 12 I thought that I was to cool to do that and I stopped. Soon I started high school and it was scary. I was bullied and called edgy. When I had blonde hair and mostly wore flannel shirts and baggy jeans. I saved money and got a Fender Jazzmaster from a shop call “The Headbangers Shed” It turned out to be a fake fender but I still loved it. Then I found a guy name Taylor and he like the same music as me. He played guitar to. So I played the drums. I invited him to my house and we jammed. It was fun. Taylor moved to Canada after that. And here we are now I’m now 17 and can’t wait to leave high school!

When you mentioned how your bass player and drummer were enemies, it reminded me of when we tried out a singer for a band back in the 80's. The drummer approached him about singing for us, but he was reluctant to because he and I almost got into a fight back in high school. He was trying to be funny at my expense and I challenged him by standing up to him and he got really intimidated. I guess he thought I was a loose cannon for the next couple years.

Late too the comments but yeah was in two high school metal bands the first I left too create my own band which ended up being my 2nd band in high school The first band "Karma Effect" our drummer (the mate that got the band together) was too controlling towards me and all the members of the band. What ever he wanted had to go, no one else got a say in what songs we covered or what parts we wrote when we were creating original tracks. So, me the rhythm guitarist left the band and started my own band too become a lead guitarist of this second band. We called ourselves "Before The End" I had the lead guitarist from my former band Karma Effect join us too be our drummer and be in both bands at the same time as I knew he was a legend behind the kit as well as a guitar player. We then wrote three original tracks with just drums and guitar which was more in a metalcore genre sound compared too the other bands thrashier sound. Which around this time period in 2012 Metalcore was a bigger scene in our town so we were getting noticed more than Karma Effect. Sadly this was the cause of Karma Effect breaking up as a band as my mate that started that band, the guy that was controlling it all was starting to get angry at my drummer for being in my band. At the start of it all he was okay with him being in both bands, but because we was getting more recognition in "Before The End" over "Karma Effect" arguments started happening between them all in that band, which caused their secondary rhythm guitarist too leave and join us as well as their bass player too leave and join my band as well which was the cause of that whole band breaking up That left us with me (Jamie Pickles) being lead guitarist, my first good mate that joined (Jacoby) being our drummer, another good mate (Ivan) Being our rhythm guitarist and another good mate of ours (Liam) being our bass player. All of us ended up writing another 7 original tracks together and these songs came together fast as I wanted to let everyone contribute too the music writing side of things which gave us a unique metalcore sound at the end of the day. The drummer of Karma Effect was still all of our best mate at the end of the day and we didn't let the music ruin the friendship all in all but that band because of the controlling just didn't work out in the end and he was man enough too admit his wrongs for doing so, but whats cool within all this high school shit with Karma Effect. We played another show together 2 years ago with all our old songs and it turned out great. But too this current day due to work and life no one else out of all my mates play music anymore besides me and I am no longer in a band but I still play the guitar every day when I get the chance and because of that I've improved further in my playing due to learning things like Phrygian Dominant and many more modes/scales

my band story is complicated to say the least, we got a group together, singer and bassist hated each other for no reason. they fought so many times where me and the drummer just wanted it to end. we play a school talent show and decide to break up that same day. moving forward there’s another band with the bassist, we need a singer so we bring in the one from the previous band. they say everything is fine and then proceed to revert and fight again, we learned that the bassist was digging at the singer, and generally being rude to him. he leaves and tries to have a power move when he was leaving and attempts to take everything with him. now he is trying to rebound and restart the first band without the singer. and this all happened in the span of a year.

I'm 15 and I started playing the guitar 5 years ago, because a friend of mine who played drums and we wanted to form a band; two years later he stopped and we never tried because I thought it sucked too much, I continued to playing because I fell in love with the electric guitar and was getting decent. In the last year the desire to form a band has come back to me and I have seriously tried in the last month and I met a boy from my school who formed a band and who he had already rehearsed several times with the drummer and the bassist (who I discovered also goes to my school) luckily for me the other guitarist they had met on the internet didn't show up for rehearsals last week because he found another band. guy I met well walking together after school so he asked me if I wanted to play with them and apparently I'm even better than them, despite this I have 3 days to finish learning all fear of the dark (of which I only know the solo), paranoid and last caress. However, I am very happy and scared not of the dark (ba-dum-tss).I hope it will be fun and not too embarassing 😄
