I was born and raised in Tacoma north end and lived here my whole life of 21 years, never lived anywhere else. It leaves a horrible taste in my mouth that the history of the town I call home and love so dearly is chock full of racism, but I am glad now that I have learned about it as it is important to know these things however horrible it is. We must learn about these misdeeds of the past so we never repeat them and so this beautiful city's soul can have peace.
Thanks, City of Tacoma for this video which clearly shows the National, State, and local history of institutionalized oppression. I'm glad I have a resource I can share with others to spread awareness of these issues. As a white person, it does not detract one iota from my liberties or happiness to have a more just society for all. In fact, it enhances them.
Thanks for producing and sharing! I'm hungry to learn more about the history of the region I am newly calling home - it's rich, complicated, and often deeply upsetting, but a history I want to know, and teach my children, so we don't unwillingly (or willingly...) contribute to the inequities.
This comment is the epitome of privilege and fragility. For most of us, racism is not a convenience that we get to tune out at our whim. It's a fact of life and of history. None of these videos are new to BIPOC Americans. In fact, this type of video is meant for folks like you. Certain white populations try to use the absence of particular histories to refute the realities that exist today. That's why we need media, like this one produced by a municipality, to cement what we were not taught within the timelines that were. While I think I understand your rationale, it's not simply a matter of reopening old wounds. They've never healed and not talking about them only saves you the pain of enlightenment. It does nothing to help the victims of these atrocities.
Hmmmm Grew up there in the 70s thru the 90s and there was a whole lot of everybody getting along until socialist ideas came into play. This agenda is the reason I left. Please tell me what laws and policies are in effect that you're citing as institutional racism and how they need to be dismantled. The last one I remember was when affirmative action passed.
Tacoma (specifically the City of Tacoma) still intentionally practice systemic/institutional racism. They haven't changed and won't sadly. I love the people of Tacoma, but the City (and its leaders) are deliberately covert in word and deed. 👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽
