Man, that weather sucked, so glad that the sun finally came out. Nice job getting your beds going. I wish that I could have screened the soil that went into my garden area but the soil went down and I had to try and pick out logs and boulders later, which is a pain in the butt. Looks like you've got some nice dark, sandy, and loamy soil. I would imagine that if you tested it with a soil kit you'd be surprise how good it is. It will obviously be very acidic due to the pine needle breakdown, but there are various crops like blueberries that thrive in acidic soil. So what you really need is alkaline to raise your PH. With its loose sandy make up it will also be great for all of your root crops once you get the PH straightened out: potatoes, beets, onions, radishes, turnips, carrots etc.

I have used the vetrician as well for my chickens, stuff works great. Also have used Apple cider vingar in water to nurse chickens when they get sick. it seems to work really well. I dilute with water. I would have never thought you could raise chickens, or even have a garden, on an island where your at. I figured the bears and Sasquatch would have eaten them all. I am surprised that the electric fence works to keep them out. You don't have electricity supplied to you so your just runing it off batteries? are you able to get a high enough shock in the wires? i have the same set up here and it works for coyote, fox, raccoon. Its just you guys have big bears to worry about. What are the wildlife issues like? Have you seen the Sasquatch? Just noticed in your vid that you don't have a hawk stopper net over the chicken area. Do they have hawks and eagles there? In my area Hawks are everywhere, they fly in packs, and if they see the chickens out from under the hawk stopper netting they devour them. I once had to untangle a very large hawk that got stuck in the netting. it was very dangerous, thing had claws and what not. very angry. had to cut netting very carefully to get him out. After that i have not had it happen again.
@AnAlaskaHomestead
@AnAlaskaHomestead Год назад
We run it all off of batteries. We’ve only had to put one bear down. She was persistent and kept trying to figure ways into the chicken coop. She broke off two wire insulators and then I seen her digging under the fence. That was strike three. We do have netting over the chicken run. We’ve had two hawks and an owl try to get inside. The eagles for some reason never bother the chickens.

What a pain in the butt to have to screen that. It looks like beautiful rich potting mix tho. I do feel your pain. I just went to a nursery yesterday to get some REAL bags of dirt. I told that lady that I want actual dirt not a bag full of sticks, which is what Home Depot and Walmart call organic soil. I said you know like the dirt we used to be able to buy for the garden. She told me to use bags of topsoil mixed with potting mix and cow manure. She said she usually Uses Chicken manure but they were out of that. I think I got three Tomatoes last year and I want to be able to grow tomatoes like I used to be able to. I blame the bag of sticks for the failure last year. I'm doing all container gardening this year. Except for some fruit trees I planted in the yard. I was told to put a banana peel in the hole before the tree for tree nutrition. So far so good, they look beautiful. I already have peaches on the peach tree. Fingers crossed the containers will be more productive with actual soil. I'm wishing you great success this year too.

Crazy weather there. I recently saw a gardening video that said if you spray the wood on the outside of the bed slugs and snails ( other critters as well) won’t go near them. It also said you would have to redo it after every rain.

I was wearing shorts today. We typically get rain almost daily , probably not good for this area.

Where we are composting is pretty futile because the bears will just eat it... Buy it in town! You are right again. Yes it IS possible to compost in a bear =proofed way but at disproportionate effort.

Howdy Brian!! Quick question: what's the manufacturer of your chest holster??? I've done some reviews on my channel for chest holsters for my Taurus Raging Bull 454 Casull, but haven't found "the one" yet. Yours looks like it might serve me better as it seems to fit a more "mature" gentleman's build better... lol! The problem I have with all the ones I have is that it needs a belt-loop tie down of some kind to make drawing much easier. Once I retire and get moved to AK, maybe I'll design and build the "perfect" chest holster.... lol!!

Lumber prices are crazy. Yeah. That is why I'm building my raised bed out of old tires. Look like you know what. But, absorb a lot of heat from the sun!

Hey now... I like that idea of using old tires for a raised bed. Are usually free and I like the idea that they and you said the lumber prices were higher than a cat's ass The solar will raised the soil temperature by the solar heat. Good Lord why didn't I think of that!

@AnAlaskaHomestead

We’ve had a body wash up but I didn’t find it. Most of the stuff that washed up here is trash. Old buckets fishing gear. I’m always on the lookout for a Japanese buoy but haven’t found one yet.

Have to clean up your saw skills. Better safe practices and treat your saw a little kinder otherwise it won't be around as long as it should.

If you are using the soil from your land from by the Conifer trees you will have acid soil you will need a soil tester an some garden lime to sweeten the soil I'm sorry if you think I'm bugging in on your business

Interesting struggle. If you have so much wood why aren't you creating mulch by shredding wood with your saws daily. First thing I would have started.

I see it's starting to warm up up there a little bit. Looks like a bear or two must be out to. Always do like the Canadian trappers do in case they get a bear out early get you a flair pistol they don't like that fosforus to well just keeps on burning when they get hit. Right now is the best time if you're going to get a bear to eat before they get into the surface sunk cabbage. If get the right recipe the bear sausage are good and chops. Out there you don't have to worry about the bears getting into the garbage. Bears are in the same genitic family as pig/hogs. You just got to cook them all the way through real good because of triganoctice really bad. Somebody came on Thursday here and stolen my datsun pickup bed trailer. Well I hope everything is going okay up there
@AnAlaskaHomestead
@AnAlaskaHomestead 3 года назад
Sorry to hear about someone stealing your stuff. That really sucks. Yeah, our neighbors said one was mucking around by their place the other day. Ha I bet a flare gun would do the trick. The weather has been great the last couple of days and projected to be sunny for the rest of the week.
