I had an old ginger root that started to smell bad/moldy so I planted it. It grew a little plant on top and when I harvested it it was a fresh root again.
that could be a youtube video for life / relationship/ business advice... "The thing i had was smelly and dying so i planted it... and then it grew fresh brand new"
You can also eat the turmeric blooms or flowers. It is a delicacy and traditional for the indigenous communities in my country. Just sautee in oil with some green chillies. It has a delicate floral earthy taste
Oh man, we had two of these flowers in our backyard this year 😢 if I'd known this sooner we could have tried something interesting. Well, hopefully the plants will bloom next year too (we haven't really planted them for turmeric but we use the leaves in some dishes, as a wrapping, so aromatic 🤤)
I didn’t even realise that it’s hard to grow them in colder climates, my granny has been growing a ton of ginger every year just in the soil outside. Don’t know how she does it but it always works out for her.
I just love how you're not only showing / educating people how people have lived for centuries but also how one can live today and exist without big consumerism. No doubt you both will be healthier throughout your lives. Thank you ✌🏼❤️🖖🏼
Oh, I looked up the dish you mentioned and it looks like something we have here in Maharashtra (for those who don't know, a state in India) We call in unde उंडे, unde is plural.
I grew a little bit in Canada this year. It has to be in a container though, and the bit she said about starting it early indoors is key. It’s a tropical plant that takes its time, so northern places the outdoor season is just not close to long enough. And a big, deep pot with good soil is important too. The wild thing is pulling is out at the end and seeing the same starter pieces still fresh and good to use after more than half a year in the dirt.
Pat dry the clean washed turmeric and ginger, put them in a weaved basket with a good airflow. They can last for weeks or even months before they start to wrinkle. Sautee the pestled fresh turmeric and its leaves with some rice, garlic, onion and seasoning, very fragrant!
where i am from it's used to marinate chicken before we fried it, so everytime my mom told me to peel it i would go use some leftover food grade plastic bags because otherwise my fingers would be stained for minimum two days 😂
I reccomend pickling some of that ginger. You’ve probably had it before at sushi restaurants it’s called Gari and man I dip into my pickled ginger jar once a day I just love it
@@cesmith48 just look up “gari recipes” and you should find a million teaching you how to make it. If you aren’t sure whether you would like it or not you can pick up a jar at a grocery store in the international foods isle and try it out. I like munching on a slice a few times a day as a little treat
@@experienceofchris1108I have been wanting to pickle ginger, but completely forgot about it. Thank you so much for mentioning it! I can’t wait to make some.
Ngl, I could eat pickled ginger straight out of the jar. I know it’s supposed to just be a palate cleanser at sushi places but it’s _so good_ that I just end up eating it first.
@@KlutzyNinjaKitty same I buy jars of it at the grocery story and just much on it all day and il especially go for it if I’m feeling nauseous or my stomach is upset.
Pittsburgh! That's my closest big city! So I now know for sure I can look at your videos as something I can personally do. Most of my family lives in Canada atm, but I'm hoping to have a place for everyone when they feel safe enough to come home
I live just south of the city and have managed to grow quite a few different varieties of foods. If you have enough light or can get creative with your indoor space its honestly not too bad. I started small and every year, I try to expand my garden within the confines of my little yard.
As per Sidhdha medicine system we have to remove the dosham in the medecine. Turmeric is steamed before drying. Gingers peel is antinutrient. So its must to peel ginger before intake. Dried or fresh. So please peel ginger before use.
@zeehuss7275 steaming is only for dried turmeric. And peeling is must for ginger. I don't think turmeric is peeled, except for hygiene reasons, when used raw. You don't know what was used to fertilise the fields, if it was raw dung from animals etc, the peel may harbour dysentery causing bacteria. So we peel and use. It's upto you.
I thought it was all bs until I tried a fresh pressed turmeric shot and it really did help with my muscle soreness, I was shocked! My mom uses it now for her arthritis.
@@heehoopeanut420Ginger is good for allergies as well. And ginger lemon shot is great for digestion. Try milk with a dash of turmeric and pepper great for soreness in the body as well as sore throat and colds! Just be careful though if you have liver issues because turmeric works on our biliary system.
I love in a tropical country and have no sense of seasons but food availability is for granted. I had never seen a ginger plant before ever, might grow one just because the leaves are so pretty 😂
My mom sent me some ornamental ginger from Florida. Definitely a wonderful tropical addition! [I have it in a nice pot and it looks lovely out by my porch in the summer. In the winter, I just cut all the leaves off, bring it inside, and don't let it dry out. In spring, I set it out again and it's all good!]
Bruh idk what that means but the only time I eat tumeric is with fresh cracked pepper so 🤷🏼♂️ guess I don't need to know I'll just reap the benefits lol
Wow!!!! I’m in New Jersey and i was like, i guess i just have to buy it bc it’s too cold to grow! Thank you!!!! Can you please do a detailed or l longer video about this? Thanks!!!
I'm just south of the city! I often have an abundance of certain fruits and veg like tomatoes and am always happy to share. I usually make salsa or sauce when I have too much and can it for later use.
You are really smart I mean very few or I see very few people who really understand ginger and turmeric but you understand it and that you give it to your dog that's totally awesome I've been giving my cats herbs for years, I blend powdered cranberry into their food for their bladder because all cats tend to have bladder issues.... And I blend herbs into their wet food Great info.
I always plant tumeric an leave a few roots back to regrow on the.same spot the tumeric flower is absolutely beautiful.the pinks are beautiful the teas are delicious with ginger ❤
I live in SW ontario and there is a native wild ginger. Have you ever tried to grow it? The rhizomes aren't as large but they are perennial snd maje a good ground cover in moist shady areas
That's probably in the genus Asarum. Tropical ginger is in a different family. It's nice though to have a little gingery flavor from the woods without buying or having to plan.
I started mine late in July but they’re still growing here in Texas where we don’t get frost until late Nov or early December. I plan to put them in my greenhouse and hopefully extend the growing season for them both. Wish me luck! I plan to do the same with mine. I will save some to replant in spring, dry some for powder (I prefer mine in capsules as a supplement) and I might possibly pickle some of the ginger for sushi (a family favorite). I also like to add both to my fire water tincture once a year. So healing! 😌
I have ibs and sometimes I get stomach pain from certain foods or stress or shi like that, and I finds that ginger helps soothe the pain gas’s bloating looseness, it is very much an asset in my kitchen and cost a little bit more then I’d like to payf for fresh.
I did not know tumeric was so similar to ginger, I've literally only seen it ground in the spice aisle in the grocery store, where as I get ginger root in the store very often. Thanks for teaching me something today!
I love the Pittsburgh area. I have lots of relatives in there. I've always said if I ever live somewhere other than Georgia, it would be Pennsylvania. 😊
WATCHING THIS VIDEO FROM DALLAS TEXAS USA 🇺🇸 IT IS 2:32 AM , DECEMBER 11TH 2023. THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. I PLANTED A DOZEN GINGER ROOTS AND PLACED THE 2 BIG FLOWER POTS OUTSIDE. IT IS COLD IN DALLAS THIS MORNING. NOW I AM GOING TO TRY TO MOVE THE POTS INSIDE MY DINING ROOM..I HAVE OTHER STARTER PLANTS IN MY LIVING ROOM AND UPSTAIRS IN AN EMPTY BEDROOM. I CAN'T GET GINGER ROOTS TO GROW...WATCHED MANY VIDEOS DO WHATEVER THEY SAY TO DO BUT I CAN'T SEEM TO GET IT RIGHT. THAT FRESH CURCURIM IS EXPENSIVE AT THE STORE. WOULD LIKE TO GROW SOME TOO. BLESSINGS TO ALL MANKIND.
i think you should plant galangal too, it’s similar to ginger but the flavor is unique, also it have more fiber than ginger so cutting it might be hard
Plant squash , cucumber , and other plants they do not like around your garden . If you have flower beds ( not edible ) around your garden you can plant Crown Imperial , ect to discourage them .
I’ve read that to get more of the benefits of turmeric absorbed in your body, you either need to take it with a fat (like coconut oil) or black pepper. Or both is what I do😊
