How we grow our own Trachycarpus palm trees from seeds

Roger picks some Trachycarpus Palm tree seeds fresh from a Palm tree, and then has a go at sowing the seed as soon as possible.
The seeds are picked from a female flowering Palm tree - which has been pollinated by a male flowering palm tree nearby to produce a huge crop of berries. Roger is doing this in spring (April) in the UK, so the berries have already been exposed to light frosts and plenty of rain .. this may help with germination as the outer coating of the seed has been reduced by the winter weather, so that the seed is more easily exposed to the soil .
Roger soaks the seeds in a bucket of water for a few days to further reduce the coating around the seeds and then sows them in a well drained sandy compost.
The seeds are ten put in a greenhouse with an average spring / early summer of around 10 - 25 degrees C (approx 70 F) - a garage / shed / conservatory / windowsill could also be used if you haven't got a greenhouse.
Then the trick is to check the soil regularly, and only water if starts to go dry (it doesn't want to be soaking wet all the time) ... and WAIT !! germination can take a few months ... we will keep you posted with our progress.

Exciting news! - 4 months later and we have a good crop of seedlings emerging through the compost (see picture from today 20th August 2022 on the community tab on our RU-vid channel - update video to follow)

I’ve not done this and do have both male & female fairly close by but now have many pups growing under and around the female tree! Possibly around 1 or 2 years old. I do water them once a week and seem to be growing fine!

Hi, thanks for your comment, maybe you have one male and one female palm ... might be worth trying to sow some of those seeds ... we still have about 100 baby plants growing well ... but very slowly

Great video. I am down in Cardiff and my Trachycarpus drop seed all over the garden. My largest palm has seeds growing like grass around the base. I have four female, two Fortunei and two Waggy all loaded with seed and two male, one of which is a Nainital so I have an interesting batch of hybrids producing seed.

Sounds brilliant! If ever you want to get rid of some of those hybrid seedlings - I would very happily take 1 or 2 off you …!?😀 Maybe we could do a video about them ?

@@rogthegardener1 I can certainly send you some seeds if you like Roger. It will be interesting to see how the seedlings develope. Of course I am not able to tell what polinated what. Would either be a Fortunei or a Nainital. My Princeps is still not of flowering proportions but give it a few years.

@@keithsmith6932 hello mate, would you be interested in doing a controlled pollination of the waggies x nainital? It would involve removing the flowers from the fortunei early. Then hand pollinating some of the waggys with nainital pollen. Perhaps half a trees worth of pollen and let the bees and wind do the rest. I would be interested in purchasing the seed in bulk. I grow all kinds of trachycarpus myself and waggy x nainital would be a great palm for most of the U.K.!

Hi thanks for getting in touch! So, here in the UK those palms would not be suitable for growing outside, they would have to be grown as houseplants so a good houseplant compost mix would be good .. here in the UK all our composts are changing from peat based (which is now being banned for environmental reasons) top peat free .. so there is a lot of experimenting and new compost development going on .. I particularly like some of the Westland composts where they are mixing in clay granules and drainage material into the compost. If I am potting up the hardy varieties as shown in the video for outdoor use, then I am experimenting with mixing soil based composts (John innes number3) with a little multipurpose / container compost to allow good drainage over wet winter weather but also retaining some water during dry summer spells... I hope this is of some help? where in the world are you living?

@rogthegardener1 Год назад
Hi John, thanks for your comment, no I have never grown any Guadeloupe palms as I thought they are not as Hardy as the Trachycarpus and wouldn't survive here in South Wales - I notice some are fairly hardy though, can I ask what variety are you growing and where are you living / what is the winter climate like?
@ketrabazig2275
@ketrabazig2275 7 месяцев назад
The hardest palm is Rhapidophyllum hystrix. This palm can survive -20°C.

Do you or should you have a male close by
@rogthegardener1
@rogthegardener1 7 дней назад
Hi Thanks for your comments, the female tree in the video has a male about 10 paces way which undoubtedly helps with the pollination. I suppose it may depend on where you live in warmer areas where there are plenty of Trachycarpus in other peoples gardens then you may have some chance of pollination .. if however you live in a more remote area with no other trees within sight you may want to provide a males .. another challenge might be to be able to source a male plant as I have never seen them labelled as male / female ...?
