Im gobsmacked. You really came through when I needed you. Thanks. I had a little bet with the wife that you would say 'wot-not' in the video. She believes you are slowly but surely transitioning back to Thai bloke mode, and this would be the video where you don't say it. "Not me'laddo, here", I told her, "You can always count on him for a solid wot-not, when the moment calls for it" "Nah, he is gradually becoming more and more Thai", she said. "he won't say it this video." I thought she was insane for taking the bet. Of course he will say it, I mused. He loves a good wot-not. Cut this chap open, and he will probably bleed wot-nots. Halfway through the video I was starting to worry a little. I hate giving out foot massages but that was the prize at stake here, and with not one single wot-not dished out, I was facing a tedious 60-minute massage. Tension grew towards the end of the video, and my wife began to throw me the occasional smirk in a 'told you so' kind of way. Then, in the dying seconds of the video (14:43), like Harry Kane rising to head home the winning goal from a corner in extra time, he came through. The most resplendent wot-not I have ever heard in all of my days. The ref blew his whistle 23 seconds later, and I had won the bet. I am now 3 minutes into a glorious foot massage and I thank you kindly for it, dear boy.

I didn't farm fish, but what i found was that catfish and snakeheads can take low oxygen levels in the water, but when you have tilapia and they get bigger to dinner plate size they can't handle low oxygen levels in the water on very hot days and they can die on mass very quickly, the only effective way to inject oxygen into water is to break the surface tension with a rotating paddle wheel, like you see at all the lake type restaurants you may have visited
@NativeFarang
@NativeFarang 11 месяцев назад
Yes that's correct. We have thousands of tilapia in the big pond and they've grown very well in there. So far we haven't had any mass fatalities. We have a return pump to circulate the water in the trenches. This circulates 15,000 litres of water an hour and we've positioned the hose a couple of metres above so it drops and helps to oxygenate the water. We'll definitely keep an eye on them for sure. If they start struggling we can throw them into the big pond. But so far so good.
@Pathoian
@Pathoian 11 месяцев назад
@@NativeFarang Are you talking about the little pipe you show constantly dropping water into the trench in your vid ? i doubt it is delivering anywhere close to 15 m3 per hour of water, that equals 250 liters per minute minimum the pipe would be 50mm ID, anyway up to you mate you will find your own way
@NativeFarang
@NativeFarang 11 месяцев назад
@@Pathoian Yes it's only a thin pipe. That's what the pump says it does 🤷🏼‍♂️ But anyways what I'm getting at is that the water has movement at least so it's not just stagnant water. But I seen those paddle wheels but of course we can't put one in the trench, it's not wide enough. Like I said, it's all trial and error. We do keep a close eye on the fish, we feed them little and often and so far we've not had any issues and they're growing at the rate we expected. But any issues we'll just throw them into the big pond that won't be a problem
@roystevenson1375
@roystevenson1375 11 месяцев назад
Solar cell and small compressor to inject air into air stones like they use in aquarium could be used..I would also agree that that drip is useless.a decent solar pump would help.

hi nat and camila you should be able to prime your water pump, get a bucket of water and pour it into the pump when you have started it, and it should kick in the water flow through the pipes, save you having to rattle your pipes , i would love to grow some durian when i get to Surin but i think it gets to hot and dry in the summer for the trees, another of my fav fruits is mangosteen will def try to grow a tree or two of those. thanks for sharing

Great video again, good to see the fish doing so well. Have you considered Baur connections for the suction and delivery hoses ? They would do away with the jubilee clips, screwdrivers and associated bad language !. A float on the suction hose might avoid picking up any debris from the trench floor, an empty plastic drum would suffice. Keep the videos coming

I would have thought that recycling the existing water would be sufficient, Pump the water from trench 1 into a header tank at around 5 feet from the ground, then release that water into the opposite end of the trench after going through some homemade filters, perhaps include some charcoal into the filter. You could make individual header tanks for each trench and just take your pump from one to the other or link them so your cleaning and aerating them all, This how most aquariums and ponds are kept oxygenated and cleaned . Just a thought .
@NativeFarang
@NativeFarang 11 месяцев назад
Ideally I should've built a makeshift filter yes, big waterdrum with rocks and coal.. but it's actually been fine without, the fish are growing nicely but would have been beneficial to have a filter for sure.

All in all we have probably just over 10,000 fish. The majority of which which are in the big pond. In the trenches we have 1000 catfish and 2000 tilapia in the other so not that many. Although these trenches seem small, you must remember that they are at least 1 metre wide, at least a metre deep and about 40 metres long. Although it seems small, it's a large volume of water which we maintain regularly. So far the fish have been in 2 months and are growing as expected. I sold fish for the ornamental industry back in England and understand the needs of fish, they need length to swim rather than depth. Fish don't swim up and down... they swim straight for the most part. Also the kids are doing great, it was too hot for them to be outside while we were filming haha

Here where I live, the Isaan farmers have ponds scattered among the rice fields. About 3-5 meters deep. They just leave them alone throughout most of the year. Sometime after the rainy season (around Dec-Jan) they pump out the water, wade into the mud, and get quite a huge haul of mixed-species fish. But, it's a one-time annual process as opposed to your MO to build a regular, sustainable income throughout the year on fish sales.
@NativeFarang

@@jdavies212msuWe're still deciding what our best option is. Once this batch of fish it sold we'll go from there, we've only got 3.5 Rai and would love to continue farming fish so we'll figure something out 😊

I've lived in Isaan 20 years, and have taught over 3,500 Isaan university students in that time. All of them (English language students) spoke English with an American accent, because that's generally desirable at the uni level. All my friends and acquaintances are currently Isaan people. In another environment, I've also traveled a multitude of times to the UK, and have taught with Brit "farang" profs throughout my career here. So, I'm very familiar with British expressions and mannerisms. With that background explained, I keep coming back to your videos solely for the fascination of watching and hearing a Brit "trapped" in an Isaan-er's body! 555. Your accent, British expressions, mannerisms, etc. are like (pardon the analogy) a cat barking like a dog and wagging it's tail because it's happy, not agitated. Just doesn't compute in my head. (I know, it's my disconnect, not yours). Hope you don't take offense, but it's utterly fascinating to me as I haven't met any UK-->Thailand transplants of Isaan birth yet; and, I didn't meet any Asians in the UK on my travels, so I'm lacking a breadth of experience there. It'll be interesting to watch your metamorphosis over the years, but I have a hint that accent will hang on, especially with a British spouse. Adding to that, hard to shake off how you were raised most of your life, even if you wanted to. Fun to watch you blend the two cultures in your new environment here. I personally went from the West to a medium-sized city Isaan environment, so the change wasn't as drastic (still had KFC. 555). Now, I'm retired and in a totally rural environment exactly like yours, so I can't imagine the immense jump you've personally made. You're doing it well. You're unique in Thailand/Isaan! Embrace it!
@NativeFarang
@NativeFarang 11 месяцев назад
Haha that made me chuckle! You are right though, I am very British in my mannerisms and expressions but deep down I never forgot where I came from so I'm very Isaan at heart! I'll have no problems eating frogs or snakes or even catching my own food. I think it's engrained into us as Isaan kids, we're just born different. That being said, I have spent most of my years in the North of the UK and it's definitely made me the man I am today. I think it'll be hard to lose that. Very kind words from you though, not sure if I'm special haha but definitely different to most, I can appreciate and understand both western and Thai cultures very well which I don't think a lot of people can say, maybe that differentiates me from the rest but I'm sure there's plenty out there just not posting videos on RU-vid for everyone to see 😂 Thanks again for your comment, I really appreciate the support and we'll continue to put out more and who knows, maybe I evolve and expand on my abilities from life lessons learned whilst living here? hopefully will reach enlightenment.. that's what Buddha wanted for everyone 🤷🏼‍♂️😉
