How I watch a Jake Baldino video in 2024: Hit like before I hit play, think of my snack choice, and then delay watching last night's Bad Batch for this instead. 👑
Jake I heard you say on the FPS podcast to Ken Levine that you are also bad at games. As a 49 year old gamer dad, I can totally attest to that. I am a gaming enthusiast but my old fingers can’t hang with my gamer brain. I am interested in your insight about loving all the new games but not being the best at all of them. Love everything you do man!
Love seeing this peak behind the curtain! Really enjoy watching the Before You Buys, usually when I have no intention of ever playing it for myself, haha.
Hey Jake, I made a huge "watch later" backlog playlist of old videos from channels I like, and earlier today I saw the video on this channel where you announced you were quitting your day job to do RU-vid full time 😅 I think it was from like August of 2015, which made me feel old as hell, but also made me happy for you. Congrats on almost 10 years of youtube-ing, we appreciate all the content you've put out over the years
Y'all do such great work. Gameranx is a large part of why I'm pursuing a career as an attorney in the video game industry. Please keep providing some of the fairest, most comprehensive video game commentary on the internet. I've loved watching more people engage with video games as an artistic medium, and I truly believe that outlets like Gameranx are essential in cultivating that perspective!
@@agentnacho2029 you can choose to take any sort of cases as a freelance attorney. Some people focus on injury. Some people focus on criminal defense. Focusing on Video games is just another field that needs more focus. It's not necessarily a career itself. It's just the freedom of being an attorney that's not with a law firm.
That question about comic book heroes that cant work in adventure games is a faulty premise, any character superhero or no, can work in a video game provided you build the game mechanics and genre around the elements of the character. Your Punisher/Hitman idea sounds great. My holy grail, bucket list of hero games I need are Daredevil (Spiderman traversal with Arkham style combat), and the craziest idea: an Ant-Man game in which you can shrink & grow at will in game play.
Bro the helldivers 2 one is a game changer to me, i was getting exhausted due to battle pass grinding trend from other live service games and was actively avoiding those trends while wishing a good active multiplayer base game to play with my buddies. Then Helldiver came and we sunk almost 100hrs on it already. I hope it sets the trends for the future of how to handle live service a right way, respecting people time and not actively reaching for players’ wallet.
I haven't been able to play Helldivers 2 yet (craptop and PS4 here), but from everything I've heard, it's pretty much a case of nothing on that battle pass really helping you to play. I'm also a Destiny player and that pass is full of "Hey, this will help you upgrade your gear" or "Have a new weapon from this season" or "Here's some seasonal armor that will drop at a slightly higher level". And it just feels like I NEED to grind out that pass to get everything, even though I have more than I need for just about everything. HD2 just seems like "Hey, want some other Cool Shit to add to general fun?"
I enjoy both your and Falcons before you buys I wish he too had a channel. You guys should do a vid just you too talking about some of your fav videos you’ve made or games you played :)
Hey Jake. Been keeping up with you since the Pretty Much It days. My question is, what’s the hair care routine? It’s beautiful and I love when you make a sudden head movement and your hair bounces a little bit. Keep up the good work!
I like the way you guys do the before you buy series . You guys are not shills for a certain game or company , that is what I really appreciate ! Thnak you .
It’s 3:00AM. You wake up in a cold sweat. As you wipe the sweat from your brow, you notice the door to your room is slightly ajar…and then you see them. Jake Baldino’s piercing blue eyes staring into your soul through the crack in the door. He’s got that million dollar smile on his face, and then you begin to scream.
I've seen you preach for Mad Max game some time ago. I finally got it on a recent Steam sale and I'm playing through it now. Really enjoy it. Wanted to thank you for introducing me to a hidden gem!
I was the younger brother watching my older brother play games but honestly that’s what got me into games. Specifically remember watching as my brother binged through the original assassins creed in a weekend. Good times.
My introduction into games was dad buying a coworkers original Xbox, with fable, halo and KOTOR. Watching him play those AMAZING games it set me and my brothers off into the gamer verse. We got game cubes, PlayStation ones, all of different consoles. A few years ago built my own PC.
I remember my dad playing resident evil director’s cut in the small tv room we had in the dark, I was always too scared to sit with him while he played though
I unsubeed from Gameranx a few years back (i dont remember why, i think it was because of spoilers) but im glad i found your own channel. Great content as always.
Regarding Superman stories being weird I couldn’t agree more! People that dismiss Superman as boring instantly identify themselves as knowing very little about him or the status quo of his books. Gunn introducing The Engineer and The Authority in a Superman film is wild and so fitting IMO. People are not going to know what hit them if he pulls off Supes, the City of Tomorrow and Supermans cast of characters right.
Hey Jake hope you're doing well Was wondering if in a qna or a video you could list the top 5 or top 10 of your favourite movies, tv shows, games etc Thanks
I remember being 8 in the early 2000s and my dad got me a Gameboy Advanced (the cube box looking one) for my birthday. He got me old school arcade games for it. Asteroids, Galaga, Centipede, and my favorite Dig Dug. I still have it to this day.
Just wanted to say that I love watching your videos, especially your Q&A ones. You're one of the more relatable and down to earth creators on the platform and the way you treat your community is really thoughtful. Also, I think you forgot to link the Ken Levine podcast episode... 14:20
Definitely don’t miss out on Dragons Dogma 2 Jake!! It’s a must play. Also question for the next QnA: Is there a genre, scenario, or type of videogame that you feel hasn’t been tried yet or hasn’t been thought of? I personally would love to see a third person WW2 game that’s done in the style of RDR2.
I just finished playing the first 2 Bioshock games for the first time ever, and got all the trophies for them as well! I've always heard about how good they are, and like you mentioned with Judas coming out I figured it was about time I played them. Fantastic world building and lore. And with the Dishonored series being one of my favorites, I felt right at home with the combat. Currently working through Infinite now.
Love these Q&A vids Jake My Question is do you think we'll ever get to the point where Nintendo begins to matchup with its competitors in terms of releases/design, I love nintendo so much and they're definitely the most unique of the big 3 but i can't help but feel they've become a bit formulaic in their "uniqueness". I would love to see them create a proper online ecosystem similar to PSN / Xbox Live(rip) and potentially even release some titles on PC, Mario Kart would do gangbusters with online PC imo
My first real at home gaming experience is a lot like yours haha. My mom got me a SNES (which was also outdated at the time) with the game Tiny toons: Buster breaks loose. I remember that game being so hard to me that i could only play the first and maybe the second level over and over!
"play late at night all the time" yep basically how it feels for me too between work, working out, catching up on emails/youtube and chilling out with a movie or tv show it ends up leaving little time in the day for some gaming
Jake, I feel you with playing stuff on stream. I have a habit of super-focusing in games and realizing that I'm not interacting with chat or making any comments because I'm getting lost in the game. Especially if it's a first playthrough because it's something that I don't want to miss anything of the gameplay or cinematics. Oddly enough, that tended to be a draw when I was doing my F1 streams because I would be locked into the races and it'd somehow be appealing to people....
I realise this is a pipe dream but i would love to see you bring back the show you did every week with andrew and Tom on the couch talking about video games and pizza, damn those were the days!
Road to El Dorado just hit me right in the nostalgia feels. I spent an unhealthy amount of time with the Atlantis: The Lost Empire tie in game on my GBC back in the day.
Hey Jake! A question for one of your next Q&A: How would you go about introducing your children to video games, if you had any? (I think it's a particularly tricky endeavor, in the age of the smartphone...) Thanks for your channels!
Thank you for all that y'all do. Please focus on enjoying your life and enjoying video games. We will love your videos no matter how often you deliver. Please focus on your health and happiness first and then provide for your fans. Love your vids, y'all!
With Shadow the Hedgehog having a big comeback this year with Sonic Movie 3 & Sonic X Shadow Generations. I have to ask, what was your introduction to the Sonic series, and ultimately (no pun intended) Shadow? For me, it was Sonic X, years before picking up my very first Sonic game, with Rivals 2 on the PSP. Loved that game! Anyway, love the work you & the GameRanx team do! :)
Hey Jake, I've been watching Gameranx since it was just you, and I continue to love the content you guys put out! What ever happened to that other channel you guys launched? I think I remember it being called time wasters or something?
I grew up on the NES, and then I got PlayStation 1 for Christmas. I got the Bug’s Life game and my sister got Tomb Raider, which scared me with the dark lighting motif. T-Rex was terrifying!!
My earliest childhood memory is of my dad playing a racing game on his Atari. I remember my folks bringing home our NES. He's definitely where my love for games started from. As for a question: Mr. Mosquito. Rocket Knight Adventures. Go.
Jake I feel the same way about switching between games. Because I switch between so many different consoles, controllers, and controls for each individual game, I also pride myself on my ability to just switch up quickly from a FPS on PC to some weirdly controlling game like Super Mario Galaxy with the Nunchuck and Wii-mote😂
My dad used to play Star Force on NES and I always fell asleep watching him play. And my older cousin and I was really into Captain Tsubasa Vol2 on NES. Again I'd fall asleep and wake up to find him still playing. Good times.
I remember getting into gaming first when going to my cousins house one christmas and it was the christmas the PS2 came out with MGS2. I was hooked. We got given his PS1 with MGS1 and I completed it then begged my parents to buy a PS2. We got it, I loved it, then it wasn't long until MGS3 came out. Still my favourite game of all time. I remember the end's fight seeming to go on forever. I replayed it recently and completed that fight in about 3 minutes haha but it was still great at the time. I think we had gameboys before this happened but console gaming at the time was a different experience
A booster gold game would actually be insane. A super gadget heavy time travel mess. Maybe it can play as a rogue lite. Maybe like Returnal but scaled back a bit. Maybe you can find little time portals to steal different tech. Idk. But that would be interesting
Lies of P honestly felt so much like a Bioshock game with a Souls twist to me. It inspired me to replay the original Bioshock after all these years. It is still a masterpiece of the medium 17 years later from the opening cutscene onward. I was blown away how well it aged.
Love the Q&As - and I do feel that playing more than one game at a time is a skill. I’ve gotten to the point where I can play different games at the same time, but for my brain, usually only one of them can be new to me. I heard it’s good mental exercise (and it’s also fun.) AND - I too am technically bad at video games, but that doesn’t stop me from playing and having a blast.
One of my earliest gaming memories in the early 90s was playing Atari Empire Strikes back at the ROTC barracks while my dad would be catching up on work. I had no idea what Star Wars was at that age and hated the game because it was too hard, but had a limited selection of games there. Years later the special edition comes out and I start to love Star Wars. Watching the movie for the first time I kept wondering why they don't have a flashing red dot to shoot at and crash into their legs...
I think I was 6 when my older brother got RE1 for his PS1. I wasn’t allowed to play it, so I wanted to see it even more, especially since my brother told me “this isn’t for little girls.” 😂 My friend’s brother had it as well and we played it at her house. That scene where the zombie turns around in the beginning, made us scream like crazy and my friend pulled the PS1’s cable. 😂 RE4 on the GameCube was the first RE game I really played and I later went back to all the others. I played every single one and even though they aren’t ‘great’, I think the Outbreak games are underrated. My question off that would be; what’s your favourite gaming memory with a family member or friend?
I was a child of the 70s and 80s my intro into gaming was when my dad bought me an Atari 2600, Starwars hooked me blowing up the Death Star then in the early 80s dad got me a ZX Spectrum and the rest is history 😊
I’m so old that my game that made it click was Last Ninja on C64. I had played quite a bit of game before, like Spy Hunter and Intellvision games such as Bump n Jump, but Last Ninja was the whole package. For the time great music, great gameplay, fantastic graphics and story (kind of).
Long long ago when Asherons Call first came out I got in at the beginning. There were no quest markers, just npcs giving vague clues you had to sort out yourself. The magic casting system forced you to randomly combine physical components until you randomly discovered a spell. I had notebooks full of spell combos, coordinates for dungeons etc. the world felt SO REAL and not like a scripted game. Have you ever had a game that made you feel so immersed like you were actually part of it? I miss that type of experience.
My gaming memory with my parents was with my dad. I had FINALLY gotten an N64 for Xmas after begging for one for YEARS and somehow I got a free copy of Mario 64 and we'd play that game. And we'd also play Diddy Kong Racing and Rayman on the PC, but I was always scared of dying in Mario and Rayman and so I'd make my dad take control of the game. My anxiety would just sky rocket. I definitely miss those days haha
hey jake! love the channel, love the fps podcast. my question is, what setting either from a movie, tv show, book, comic, etc. would you like to see adapted as an open world? (that hasn’t already been)
Same for me on batman!! I have played the series numerous times but never actually played Origins. Doing my first ever playthrough and it’s better than I thought
I loved that captain America game. It had similar combat mechanics to Arkham Batman that made it fun. Honestly was genuinely surprised myself at how much fun I had
Mine was playing super Mario 3 at a birthday party. Then I begged and begged and got an SNES for Christmas. The game that did it for me was FF6 (FF3 in NA). Got me hooked on video games forever.
Literally your memory with RE1, but for me it was with my dad. His friend from work let him borrow it with the strategy guide and we played the fuck out of it, but it was RE2!!!! Beat all the scenarios. My favorite RE game to this day!
I remember my mom would take me to Family Video and rent me any game i wanted and if i couldn’t decide she would pick two put it behind her back and told me to pick left or right and that would be the game id get which introduced me to a lot of unique games. Only catch with my mom was i had to convince her to get rated T games. Rated M was out of the question I actually didn’t play M games until I was 17 and was able to sneak them into the house.
What is your take on Remaking games? still waiting for the Prince of Persia remake and still no updates on the Legacy of Kain, if anything they could do a remake or redo the whole game by capcom is "Chaos Legion" really love the game even its rated so low, love the summoning system, its a different take on Devil May Cry Series
hey jake, two related questions ish (they're short) 1: favorite (fictional) gun in a video game? 2: the helghast's standard assault rifle is peak design, agree or disagree
Hey Jake! First off, I’ve been a big fan of yours and Gameranx for a while. Thanks for all the hard work and content you produce! I’m interested in how you got started in this career. What would you do if you had to start from scratch today? What inspired you to start Gameranx? I loved the segment on the Before You Buy, seeing how your process works, and I’d love maybe just a surface level bit of advice for someone who might want to start talking about games, or putting some content out there. Again, thanks for being a beacon of light in the dark seas of this RU-vid gaming corner!
When I was in 2nd grade I got a ps2. I remember telling a friend at school and the next day he gave me a stack of games he didn't play. In that stack of games was Devil May Cry. The first playthrough mustve taken at least a year. During a time where i had a paper full of san andreas cheats i wrote down at the library. No walkthroughs alot of backtracking. I remember my sister being creeped out by the laughter of the demons. Core memory stuff.
For next Q&A, id love to hear about what game series youre willing to defend to death. I always love hearing Falcon step up to bat for Sonic games (even if I believe the last good sonic games was Adventures 2), so id love to hear your thoughts. For example, I personally love Rainbow Six Siege, and despite its obvious issues, I am still willing to defend it due to the unique experience it provides. Thanks for all your hard work Jake! Get Falcon on one of these next time!
I remember sitting for hours watching my brothers play Call of Duty World at War Zombies and then later Red Dead 1… they would eventually give me a go (without telling my parents) and it made me so excited to even get 10 minutes of play time. I’ve played thousands of hours now 😂
Question: Would you be open to making a video of the entire process of making "content "? Because as someone who's working on my channel, it would super cool to see someone else's process. Like do you record your entire playthrough? What editing software do you use? How did you learn to use it? What are some things you knew earlier? How long before you were happy with the videos you made?
